Box Office: Avatar Leaps Into Its Fifth Week at No. 1

Looks like there is no stopping Avatar! The film had a very good weekend - not only did it take home record-breaking wins at the Critics' Choice Awards and two Golden Globes, it also took the top spot at the box office with $41.3 million. Thanks to the new sales figures, the movie is closing in on the $500 million mark domestically (and getting closer to unseating Titanic as the highest grossing film of all time).

In second place was newcomer The Book of Eli with $31.6 million, followed by The Lovely Bones with $17 million.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Sherlock Holmes continued to hold on to their places in the top five, earning $11.5 million for fourth place and $9.8 million for fifth place, respectively.

Box Office: Avatar Is Still Raking It In

No surprise here: Avatar topped the box office for its fourth straight week in a row, a feat that hasn't happened since 2008's The Dark Knight. The film took in $48.5 million for the No. 1 spot, but also saw its biggest sales dip yet with a 29 percent decrease from last week's numbers.

Sherlock Holmes came in second yet again with $16.6 million, followed by Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with $16.3 million.

The majority of you said you were interested in seeing the vampire flick Daybreakers, and it proved to be the most promising of the weekend's debuts with $15 million for fourth place. It's Complicated came in fifth with $11 million.

Other newcomers Leap Year and Youth in Revolt didn't fare as well. The Amy Adams vehicle took in $9 million for a No. 6 spot, while the latter made $7 million for a disappointing No. 9 finish.

Another holiday weekend, another big win for Avatar. The film still held strong at the No. 1 spot, pulling in an impressive $68.3 million domestically and bulldozing the rest of the competition, including Sherlock Holmes which came in second with $38.3 million.

Avatar's earnings push it past the $1 billion mark globally, making it the fourth highest grossing film worldwide behind James Cameron's other baby, Titanic, as well as Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. And it's only in its third weekend in theaters so time will tell.

Rounding out the rest of the top five was Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with $36.6 million, It's Complicated with $18.7 million, and The Blind Side which continued to surprise by earning $12.6 million - even better than last week's figures.

Box Office: Avatar Is Still Wowing Audiences at No. 1

Thanks to a few film juggernauts, it was a record-breaking weekend at the movies, with the industry taking in an unprecedented $278 million in sales. Leading the pack was reigning champ, Avatar. Despite three big releases breaking into the top five, no one was able to unseat James Cameron's sci-fi spectacle, which brought in $75 million in its second week (that's an incredibly small drop off of only 2.6 percent from last weekend's final gross).

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law gave a strong showing at No. 2 with their Sherlock Holmes raking in $65.3 million and breaking the record for biggest Christmas opening ever. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel followed at No. 3 with $50.2 million. The Meryl Streep comedy It's Complicated earned $22.1 million for fourth place, and finishing out the top five was Up in the Air with $11.7 million.

Sherlock Holmes: Action-Packed Bromance

Forgive my use of the overused term "bromance" in my title - it's been bandied about quite a lot this year to describe buddy films. There have been many, but few have had what Sherlock Holmes has: two male leads who really have chemistry.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law play legendary detective Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson in the stylish action comedy from director Guy Ritchie. Ritchie's name is markedly underused in the film's ad campaign, and it's sort of appropriate: gone is the explicit language and sexuality I expected from the gritty filmmaker, best known for Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. That doesn't mean that it's diluted, however; what Ritchie employs is his knack for cool-looking action and clever, funny dialogue. This makes for a movie with mass appeal and allows you to focus on what the film is really about: Holmes and Watson's relationship.

The 1800s London setting is dark and dreary, and the central case - a supernatural mystery involving a villain named Lord Blackwood - follows suit. Robert Downey Jr.'s face appears tired and haggard but like the case, it's is only a facade. Gray as it is, the movie is really full of fun and lightness. The two lead actors bring such charisma to each of their roles; I was expecting it from the always-wry Downey Jr., but Jude Law caught me off guard. His Watson is jaded and has grown weary of Holmes's antics, but Law is a captivating delight in what could have been a boring role.

Rachel McAdams surfaces as Holmes former love and current nemesis, but she and RDJ have far less chemistry than he does with his male counterpart. That could be because we get almost no romance from Ritchie, who either realized he didn't need it or forgot about it while he was editing in fast-paced cuts and slick flashbacks. Not that I didn't love those, but the trademark techniques become overused in some parts.

My only real complaint is the actual plot - it's like Ritchie has so many other elements of the movie he wanted to get right (the casting, the look) that he overlooked the importance of a compelling mystery. This isn't any old fictional detective, this is Sherlock Holmes. The case Holmes must solve is at first frustrating because it appears to deal with magic, rendering Holmes's renowned logic unnecessary. Then, when his logic prevails and he cracks the case, it's frustrating that the story isn't smarter.

But, the fact that a disappointing plot couldn't ruin the fun for me says a lot about the movie - everything else is incredibly entertaining. The action sequences are the best part, but what's even more awesome is that they compete with the witty dialogue, which competes with the acting which . . . oh, you get it.
