Are You More Excited For 90210's Old Cast or New Cast?

Admittedly, I was thrilled to read Entertainment Weekly's dishy interview with Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth about their reunion on the set of the new 90210. It's a great flashback to the love triangles and backbiting of the earlier series, and it helps explain why the two of them have decided to reunite on the new show.

But it also got me thinking again: Is it a bad thing that when 90210 lands on the cover of EW, it's because of its old cast members and not its new ones? I actually asked executive producer Gabe Sachs about that back at TCA, and he said they'd take publicity any way they could get it, even if it came in the form of buzz about the old cast. That will work for a while, I'm sure - but can it turn the series into a hit?

It's Official: Brenda's Back!

We haven't yet seen the last of Brenda Walsh. At the TCA press tour this morning, 90210 producers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah confirmed that Shannen Doherty has a deal to return to the show as Brenda.

"She'll be the guest director of our musical," Sachs said - which several of the cast members seemed to think was a joke at first. ("I have questions!" exclaimed AnnaLynne McCord, who plays bad girl Naomi.) But it's totally true. As Judah said after the session, the producers met with Doherty and pitched her several ideas, one of which was the drama teacher story. She'll be helping the cast put on Spring Awakening, though Judah wouldn't go so far as to say Doherty will be signing or dancing.

A CW press release filled in Brenda's backstory a bit more: after the original 90210 wrapped up, Brenda headed to London to study acting, became a successful actress in London and New York, and then moved into directing. West Beverly High managed to petition her to return as a guest director. The deal makes Doherty the fourth original cast member to make the transition to the new show: Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, and Peach Pit proprietor Joe E. Tata will also be back.

90210 Revives Brenda Walsh?

There's a lot of chatter today about this Entertainment Weekly item that Shannen Doherty is in talks to join the new 90210, reprising her role as Brenda Walsh and theoretically joining Jennie Garth as the second original cast member to appear in the show's new generation.

The deal is far from done: Doherty has reportedly told the show's producers that she's interested, but 1) she wants to know what the story is first, and 2) she wants more money. There's also the little issue that she and Garth weren't exactly BFF back in the day, but Garth told Michael Ausiello that "A lot of time has passed, and I'm a big girl. I'd have no problem with her coming on the show." But it's interesting to contemplate: How would 90210 work Brenda into the story? And would you want to see it?

Also, is anyone else starting to think that all this focus on the old 90210 is the wrong tactic for promoting the new show? They've got Garth. They've got Jason Priestly directing a few episodes. They might have Doherty. They even have the Peach Pit. So what's going to make this 90210 different or worth watching? Will it all just feel like a rehash of the original, but with older cast members at (let's face it) worse times in their careers? I hope we get some signs of the new show's personality soon.
