Seth MacFarlane Has Stewie Throwing a Lot of Punches For Family Guy

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has created his very own YouTube channel to beg the question: Where's My Emmy?. (First of all, Seth, this is the first time Family Guy has been nominated for best comedy series, so take it easy). Anyway, the website has been rolling out video clips showing Stewie and Brian arguing over the nominees for best comedy series, taking digs at each of the shows. The videos are basically exactly the same except for some of the dialogue particular to each nominated series, and they're so heavy on cartoon violence that they actually make me cringe more than laugh.

According to Variety, the next Terminator movie will attempt to broaden its audience with a PG-13 rating.
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has signed a huge deal with Fox that makes him the highest-paid writer-producer in television, Reuters reports.
Tom Waits has announced Summer tour dates via a bizarre faux press conference, Billboard reports.
The Hollywood Reporter has the mind-boggling news that Tristan Wilds (Michael from The Wire) is joining the cast of the 90210 spinoff. Another actor, Michael Steger, has also been cast.

Meanwhile, TV Guide has news that Brea Grant, who played Landry's rebound girl on Friday Night Lights, has been cast as a Heroes character with the power of superspeed.
Amy Winehouse won't be recording the new Bond movie theme after all, writes Variety.
Billboard announces that Nine Inch Nails is offering a free download of its new album, The Slip.

Fox Announces Family Guy Spinoff: Cleveland

It looks like Cleveland Brown, neighbor to Family Guy's Peter Griffin, will be the star of his own show. Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane, along with Cleveland's voice actor Mike Henry and former Simpsons writer Rich Appel are collaborating on the project, tentatively titled Cleveland.

As Hollywood Reporter puts it, "Cleveland, who plays off black stereotypes, is the most levelheaded among Griffin's trio of friends." That's for sure. In fact, I'm probably more likely to tune into this spinoff than I am to watch Family Guy these days, as I sometimes get tired of Peter Griffin's outrageousness.

Cleveland seems like an ideal choice for a show's main character; as the gentle, slow-speaking, everyman, there's probably a lot of funny stuff to be found in his life.

Family Guy Without Its Creator, and More Strike News

It's day 10 of the Hollywood writers' strike, and people - from Family Guy's creator to blogging writers from Late Show with David Letterman's staff - are starting to get punchy. Here are some of the recent developments:

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is not pleased that Fox is planning to complete written episodes of the show without his input, calling it "a colossal d*ck move" by the network. He admits, though, that Fox is within its legal rights to do so.
There's a report that Letterman will pay his staff out of his own pocket through the end of the year.
Ellen DeGeneres, who's been under fire for crossing picket lines, has canceled plans to tape her show in New York next week.
What we'll be watching if the strike continues: a whole lot of game shows and a Supernanny spinoff called Supermanny.
There's a small (so far) movement to send unsharpened pencils to the networks.
This new blog tracks strike-related job losses.
The studio executives have said they don't know how much money there is to be made online, but this video currently making the rounds would, um, strongly suggest otherwise.

Many TV and movie actors - including Ben Stiller, Lily Tomlin, Zach Braff, Lisa Kudrow, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus - visited the picket lines on Tuesday for a "Picketing with the Stars" event. To watch some clips and interviews, just read more

A Sneak Peek at "Family Guy"'s 100th Episode

One of the most fun events I've been able to attend so far at the TCA press tour was Monday's live reading of the 100th episode of "Family Guy." Over themed lunches (the Lois was a cobb salad; the Peter included a large cookie), we listened to the show's voice actors run through a half hour of crude, inappropriate and often hilarious lines from the episode, which will air early in the show's upcoming season.

Of course, it will be interesting to see how much of the episode we heard actually makes it to air; Fox reminded us both in print and in person that this script hadn't yet been reviewed by the folks in broadcast standards and practices - which was obvious, to put it mildly. All the actual cursing will be saved for the DVD, of course, and there was one joke involving Keanu Reeves' unmentionables and the magical mailbox from The Lake House that I can't quite see making it to prime time either.

But there were lots of great (and slightly cleaner) moments in the episode, currently titled "Stewie Kills Lois." The basic plot line is pretty self-explanatory: Stewie, well, kills Lois when she and Peter decide to go on a cruise without him. The episode has a lot of scenes between Stewie and Brian the dog, and watching Seth MacFarlane switch seamlessly between the two voices as he essentially did dialogue with himself was pretty incredible. It also has an appearance by the Kool-Aid Man busting through a courtroom wall, which is something I can always get behind in my "Family Guy." The series will return for its sixth season on Sept. 23, and between this and the much-anticipated Star Wars parody episode, it should be something to watch.
