Movie Preview: Sex Drive

I heard about Sex Drive a while ago and then read a review that gave the movie a so-so rating, but now that I've seen the trailer, I'm kinda interested to see it. In some ways it resembles a way weaker version of Superbad, but also more bizarre and - it seems - a little less gross. The plot goes like this: "A horny teenager brings his friends along on a road trip from Chicago to Knoxville to lose his virginity with a girl he met online."

The cast makes me like this movie more than I might otherwise. I don't usually laugh at Seth Green, but I actually did in this case. Also, it stars one of my favorite actors from Greek: Clark Duke (who plays Rusty's conservative Southern roommate Dale on the show), pictured above in the bathrobe. And finally: James Marsden is in it. He's even cute when playing a pretty abhorrent character. Now that's talent.

PaleyFest: The Buffy Cast Reunites!

Buffy, Tara, Spike, and Xander, together again! A large part of the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer took the stage Thursday night at the PaleyFest in Los Angeles, revealing some secrets from their eight years of working on the series and taking questions from appreciative fans who often credited Buffy with shaping their whole lives.

And when I say appreciative, there really should be a capital A. This crowd of more than 800 cheered at everything - from the opening clip of one of Sarah Michelle Gellar's 1994 scenes on All My Children to the introduction of the panel's moderator. (In terms of cast members, James Marsters seemed to get the most applause, but show creator Joss Whedon was the only person to get a standing ovation.)

In attendance: Whedon, writer/producers Marti Noxon and David Greenwalt, and cast members Gellar, Marsters, Amber Benson (Tara), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), Emma Caulfield (Anya), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Seth Green (Oz), and Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn). Both Eliza Dushku and Alyson Hannigan were listed in the program, but neither showed - bummer. But the others kept the conversation lively - especially Green, who had a one-liner for everything, for better or worse.

The night really got going with a screening of the musical episode "Once More with Feeling" (not a sing-along, sadly). The episode proved to be a perfect starting point for talking about what's made Buffy so enduring, so for the scoop (update: here's part two of my report), just read more.

Noxon introduced the episode screening by saying that, frankly, the writers had some doubts about whether Whedon could actually pull off a musical: "We were - not nervous, we just hadn't ever seen him write a song before," she explained. For his part, Whedon said he was actually more terrified to put together "Hush," the mostly silent episode.
One theme that kept coming up was the way Buffy consistently pushed the envelope, whether by shifting the formats of its episodes, killing off beloved characters, or even taking Buffy herself into a deep, dark hole during the sixth season. Gellar cited the opening shot of "The Body," which was done in one long take, as another example. "We were constantly doing things that had never been done," she said. "We were constantly doing things that challenged both the audience and ourselves.
This is probably not news to anyone who's ever been to a Buffy event, but Nicholas Brendan talks so much like Xander, it's creepy.
Gellar on the initial reaction to getting the role of Buffy: "All of my friends felt sorry for me because I'm on a midseason replacement on a network nobody had heard of, based on a movie that wasn't all that."
Marsters had a great description of what went into the writing of Buffy, saying the writers took the worst things that happened to them in high school and "put fangs on it." Whedon said he and Greenwalt used to call Gellar "Jimmy Stewart" because she picked up his baton of having to deal with tremendous pain on film.
One of the biggest bursts of applause in the entire evening was when the moderator (TV Guide's Matt Roush) mentioned that the Spike/Buffy sex scene had recently been named the steamiest TV scene of all time by his magazine. Gellar noted that the way Buffy shows up on those lists, and the way the fan community has reacted to the show over the years, means way more to her than any Emmys the show could have won.
Gellar said she had no idea until five minutes before the panel took the stage that Buffy had gotten it on with slayer Satsu in the latest comic book. Trachtenberg also had no idea what had happened to Dawn in the comic series. "If these guys were real nerds," Whedon said, "we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 9, "Crash Into Me (Part One)"

Ever since the Great Ferry Boat Disaster of 2006, the words "A Grey's Anatomy special event" have struck fear into my heart. I've taken them as a synonym for unrealistic, overblown plot lines and too-sudden, too-tidy resolutions. But I was pleasantly surprised by this week's "special event," if only because none of the main characters died and then came back to life (yet). There were some groaningly predictable moments, but there were also some genuinely strong scenes, so to hear what I thought were the highs and lows, just read more

I assume that two things made this episode worthy of the "special event" tag: the ambulance crash and Seth Green. I'll take the first one first. Grey's has never really established paramedic-doctor relationships, so the stories of the EMTs involved - from the two trapped in the ambulance to the driver who had a seizure to the white supremacist - weren't compelling by themselves. But, as is so often the case on Grey's, it was the doctors' reactions to the patients they were dealt that made the episode interesting.

I recently had a conversation with a coworker about how a show as racially diverse as Grey's doesn't mention race very often, so it was interesting that a white supremacy story cropped up. The plot gave Bailey plenty of chances to be awesome - from "someone will be here soon to save the master race from extinction" to "nobody better ever call me Nazi again" - but it also caused her to miss a date with her husband yet again. Will "rising above" lead to the downfall of her marriage?

Meredith, meanwhile, is clearly going to learn some lesson from helping the paramedics trapped in the ambulance - but what? That she should relish the few chances she has to make a difference? That she should take a stand and not waffle, as she did with Derek and the break-up sex? On a related note, the Chief certainly is acting very fatherly toward Mere these days. It also was interesting to see him moved by the paramedic case, especially during the "I Can See Clearly Now" scene.

Now, as for Seth Green: I thought his story was one of the episode's weak points, and that had nothing to do with Green and everything with how telegraphed it was. Sloan said the artery would blow any minute; Lexie was the only one ever near his room. So naturally, Lexie dealing with the blown artery would be our cliffhanger. A little suspense would have been nice.

As for the rest of the episode:

So Ava/Rebecca just waltzes in and makes out with Alex? And then he sneaks her into the gallery and doesn't even instruct her to come up with a good lie, even though some of the surgeons helped with her new face? I'm confused.
Cristina's dancing at the beginning of the episode made me happy. Mere's was a little sad.
What I know about brain surgery couldn't fill a thimble, but it seems like there should be some kind of backup system set up in case a computer freezes mid-operation.
My weekly reason to love Erica Hahn: "I was complimenting your surgical skills here, Dr. Sloan, not looking for a window into your wounded soul."

Seth Rogen Talks Monsters, Aliens, and Halloween

Tonight, NBC is airing a Halloween-themed follow up to last Summer's animated hit Monsters Vs. Aliens, Monsters Vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space. Seth Rogen, who voices the gelatinous jokester B.O.B. in the half-hour special, chatted on the phone with a few reporters about reprising his role. He talked animated films, Halloween, and even a little bit of the upcoming adaptation of The Green Hornet that he's currently filming with Michel Gondry.

On why he enjoys voicing B.O.B.: I enjoy it because, I mean, this is the stupidest answer - I enjoy it because it's fun. The character is funny and the directors are cool and the story is funny; to me it's like a very fun format to kind of improvise, and try to discover a character in a different way than physically doing it, you know. You've got to do it all with your voice, and I really enjoy that.
On dressing up for Halloween: I have a girlfriend now and I've entered the unfortunate world of paired costuming. It's not fun. I don’t recommend it. I always end up being the lamer half - it's like she's a dog and I'm a fire hydrant or something like that. It's never fun. So maybe I'm dodging a bullet this year.

On his Halloween TV faves: I always liked The Simpsons' Halloween specials, personally. They were always amazing. I always looked forward to that on Halloween. And I watched TGIF sitcoms growing up because I was a nerd and had nothing to do on Friday nights, and whenever the sitcoms would do their Halloween episode, I always enjoyed that for some reason. That always spawned some good comedy.
On the pressure of making The Green Hornet: I will blame Gondry if it sucks. No, I'm just joking. No, we are all in it, you know. I will say, I take a huge amount of the pressure. I understand that. I understand that. I understand that it's my face on it, you know, when it literally comes out even if it sucks for another reason, people will blame me and that's why I have to be so involved - to try to make sure that it doesn't suck. But there's a lot of pressure. I understand that. I've been talking about this movie for years, and if it sucks, then no one will be more disappointed than me, believe me.
On improvising as a voice actor: You can actually improvise a lot as a voice actor. I mean, real people I think don't - and I didn't - understand how animation works really. The time consuming part is really creating the characters and the sets and the worlds. And aside from that it's not that entirely different than shooting a live action movie; the characters mouths are quite easy to manipulate once all the information is built into the computer. So you can improvise a lot and it doesn't matter really how far along they are in the process; they can just make the character say something different. Almost more than in a live action movie because of how slow the process is.
On whether he'll do more voice acting in the future: I really enjoy it and I mean, I've always been a fan of animation - yes, I would like to.
