"Lost" Season 3 Refresher

After an outrageously long hiatus, "Lost" returns tomorrow, Feb. 7, at its new time of 10 p.m. This season has seemed a little desperate at times, trying feverishly to keep viewers riveted while the many, many plotlines spread out in chaotic ways, raising more questions than can possibly be answered. It’s been sometimes boring, and other times frustrating.

Still, like any addict, I can’t give it up! If you’ve forgotten some of the things that have happened in those six fall episodes (oh, they seem so long ago!), here’s a refresher.

Kate, Sawyer and Jack are being kept in captivity by "Henry Gale," whose real name is Ben, and some of the Others. Kate and Sawyer are in outdoor cages, while Jack is in an old shark tank. Jack’s main caretaker is an Other named Juliet who looks vaguely like Jack’s ex-wife, Sarah. The Others have a thick file on Jack, documenting his entire life up until the plane crash.

The Others’ community is like a real, modern village, with homes and kitchens and well-kept lawns.

Kate and Sawyer are forced into manual labor, breaking and moving rocks. Being prisoners together, without any other original "Losties," brings Kate and Sawyer together to the point where they get it on in Sawyer’s cage, and he tells Kate he loves her.

Alex appears at the place where Kate and Sawyer are breaking rocks and demands to talk to Ben, and tells Kate "They’re going to kill your boyfriend!" There is confusion about whether this means Jack or Sawyer.

Lots of other developments, so

In Sun’s flashbacks, we learn that she had an affair with Jae Lee, and since we already know that Jin is sterile, Sun’s baby may be Jae’s. We also see that Jae died by either jumping or being pushed out of a building (out of room 1516, yet another variation on the "special" numbers in the show).

On Desmond’s sailboat, an armed Sun encounters an Other named Colleen, who calls Sun by name and tells her, "We are not the enemy." Unconvinced, Sun shoots Colleen.

Ben proves to Jack that he is in touch with the outside world by playing a video of the Red Sox World Series win, and then promises Jack that if he cooperates with them, Ben will take Jack home.

Somehow, Desmond, Locke, Eko and Charlie survived that crazy explosion that reduced the Hatch to a hole in the ground. Then, however, the smoke monster returns to beat Eko to death. Just before he dies, he whispers in Locke’s ear, “You’re next.”

Eko’s God stick has the scriptural carving, “Lift up your eyes and look north,” which seems to be a message meant for Locke.

A vicious polar bear makes an appearance having dragged Eko into a cave sometime after the Hatch explosion. Inside the cave there are human skeletons, one of which sports a t-shirt with the Dharma logo on it.

At the Pearl hatch, Locke and the fresh-faced newcomers, Nikki and Paulo, discover video footage of a man with an eye patch.

Ben reveals to a psychologically tortured Sawyer that there are actually two islands: the one where the Losties crashed, and the one where the Others are keeping Jack, Kate and Sawyer captive. Thus, escaping the Others just got a lot harder.

Sawyer has a daughter he has never met, but for whom he set up a bank account. He had a large sum of money put into it, demanding that the transaction be anonymous.

Jack spots X-rays of a man’s spine and notices a cancerous tumor. It becomes apparent that the X-rays are Ben’s and that he will die unless Jack, the only qualified surgeon around, operates on Ben. Juliet asks Jack to mess up during the operation, making Ben’s death look accidental. She lets him know that "some of us want a change."

Having escaped from the shark tank (probably not a mistake on Ben and Juliet’s parts), Jack steps into a room full of TV monitors and sees Kate and Sawyer cuddled up together in Sawyer’s cell. Ben appears and reminds Jack that he will get to go home if Jack just does the surgery, and Jack agrees.

During the operation, however, Jack makes an incision in Ben’s kidney sac and threatens to let him die there on the table unless the Others set Kate and Sawyer free. This is how the first part of the season ends: with Ben possibly dying and Kate and Sawyer possibly being freed from the Others.

Need more? You can watch all six episodes online before "Lost" returns tomorrow night.

Season Recap: "Heroes"

"Heroes" is one of the best new shows on TV, and I'm very excited for the new episodes on Jan. 22! Whether you’re itching to read about your favorite characters or you’ve decided to pick up the series mid-season, check out my recap of the first ten episodes. Also, fans of the show can head over to my group, Addicted to "Heroes," to discuss!

The show centers around the work of Chandra Suresh, a geneticist determined to figure out how some people with certain genetic abnormalities are capable of superhuman powers. In his research he encounters Sylar, desperate to be extraordinary, and when Sylar finds out he isn’t, he goes about these killing these super-humans and opening up their heads. His exact tactics are unclear, but he is then able to “consume” their powers. Sylar kills Chandra and continues on his rampage to acquire every possible superhuman ability. Chandra’s son, Mohinder, begins piecing together the bits of the puzzle that was his father's work.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bennet has been studying extraordinary people as well, and even adopted one of them, his daughter Claire. He is intent on obtaining Chandra’s well-hidden list of superhumans and removing Claire from that list so she can live a relatively normal life. Yet there is something sinister about Mr. Bennet, too. For example, what is his relationship with the quiet Haitian man who can erase people's memories? Who are the people who go over Mr. Bennet’s house to meet their “biological daughter,” Claire? Why does he kidnap so many of these “special people” and keep some of them in his creepy hospital-like place?

There’s too much mystery surrounding Mr. Bennet’s character, so to move on to the main heroes in the show,

Claire
Claire is the blond, teenage cheerleader whose life is central to “saving the world.” Her power is that she can heal herself within seconds, however mutilated, beat up, or scarred she might get. When Claire saves a man from a burning building, her cheerleader friend Jackie takes all the credit and basks in the attention. Thus, when Sylar comes looking for the superhuman cheerleader, he kills Jackie. At the end of the Episode 10, the Haitian man goes to Claire’s house to erase her memory, but instead asks if Claire can keep a secret.

Isaac Mendez
Isaac’s power is that he can paint scenes of future events before they happen, yet he thinks he can only do this when he’s high on drugs. He doesn’t want to get off drugs, having painted a catastrophic vision of New York being bombed in the future. He wants to paint more in order to figure out how to prevent the events from occurring. With time, he discovers that he can paint the future scenes even when he is sober.

Hiro
Good natured Hiro, the Japanese businessman, can bend time and space. Thus, he can travel back in time to change the outcome of situations, making him able to save lives or put a winning poker hand in his friend’s hands. Hiro takes his superpower very seriously, believing there are grave responsibilities that go along with the powers. He falls in love with a Southern waitress named Charlie who has the power to memorize things quickly, though when Sylar kills her, Hiro learns that he is not always able to go back to the specific time and place he needs to go to in order to save people. In the final of the ten episodes, Isaac has painted a prophetic image of Hiro facing a dinosaur and wielding a large sword.

Niki
Niki is the harried single mother to Micah, wife of D.L., and twin sister of Jessica, who died at age 12, possibly by the hand of Niki and Jessica’s dad. Niki was selling naughty video footage of herself online and trying to make ends meet. She gets down with her bad self, however, when her violent alter ego emerges who is either the spirit of Jessica, or a second personality whom Niki has simply named Jessica. Jessica has superhuman strength and no qualms whatsoever about killing people or ruining lives. When Niki’s ex-husband D.L. runs off with their son Micah, Jessica takes charge, intending to hunt D.L. down and get Micah back. D.L., however, also has a power, and Jessica’s plan goes awry. When Niki regains control of her mind, she deems herself too dangerous and asks a police officer to arrest her.

D.L.
D.L. can put himself through things, such as walls or even people, and objects can pass through him, but he must concentrate in order to do it. Thus, Jessica bought the crazy sniper gun saying “he can’t see it coming,” because if he did the bullets would simply go through him, doing no damage.
Micah also seems to have a power, though it hasn’t been explained completely; in one scene, Micah touches an out-of-order phone and suddenly there is a dial tone.

Nathan Petrelli
NYC politician and older brother to Peter, Nathan feels the constant need to succeed and, on top of that, he can fly. Usually he can control his power, but it seems that when under stress, the flight just happens to him. This comes in handy when Mr. Bennet and his Haitian crony try to capture him, though it worked against him when he was in a car crash with his wife: He flew upwards and avoided the crash while the car smashed to bits, causing Nathan’s wife Heidi to be wheelchair-bound. Nathan’s guilt has created a great divide between he and his wife, and he ends up having an affair with Niki/Jessica.

Peter Petrelli
Peter can’t ever seem to fill his older brother Nathan’s shoes and is ridiculed for being a hospice nurse. Peter can take on the abilities of whichever superhero he’s around: flying with Nathan, healing himself when with Claire, and painting the future in Isaac’s studio. He is fascinated with the idea of having superpowers, and eagerly reads up on Chandra’s theories. In one episode, Peter is visited by a mature and somber Hiro from the future, who warns Peter to “save the cheerleader, save the world.” This causes much confusion as Peter tries to figure out with the clueless present-day Hiro what the future Hiro might mean. He is convinced that he needs to prevent the bomb of Isaac’s premonition painting from hitting New York. In the last of these episodes, Peter has a dream/vision of the apocalyptic day in New York when everyone looks at him with dread and runs from him. Then his body glows red and explodes. He wakes up terrified, muttering to Nathan about it being “all his fault” before his breath stops.

Eden
The great influencer, Eden has the power to mentally force people to do things, taking over their will so it looks like they are acting of their own volition. Mr. Bennet convinces her to help him with his quest to get at Chandra’s work. Eden uses Mohinder to get access to Chandra’s office, though she also develops real feelings for Mohinder. In the last episode, she tries to mentally force Sylar to kill himself, but he grabs her and tells her he’ll consume her power as well. To avoid this, Eden shoots herself in the head.

Matt Parkman
Everyday cop Matt Parkman has failed the test to become a detective three times due to dyslexia. He feels low about himself in his marriage and at work until one day when he is able to locate a hidden little girl by hearing her thoughts. His power to read minds earns him a promotion to work on the Sylar case, though the power becomes problematic when he hears that his wife has been having an affair with one of his colleagues. Matt also can’t seem to read Claire’s mind, as he only hears static when the Haitian man is around.

Ted
Ted’s power is tragic: He is highly radioactive and his radiation levels intensify when he becomes upset. At the hospital where his wife dies of cancer that he caused, he threatens to explode like an atomic bomb. It’s possible that he has something to do with the explosion predicted in Isaac’s painting.

Season Recap: "Ugly Betty"

Anyone who has ever felt awkward or out of place has a friend in Betty Suarez, the magazine assistant with bad hair, a brace-face and tons of pluck in ABC's "Ugly Betty." Based on a popular Colombian telenovela, the show combines a sweet "beauty is only skin deep" moral with a campy mystery reminiscent of early "Desperate Housewives." Here's a rundown of what's happened so far:

Betty at Mode
Queens-bred Betty lands her first job in publishing as the assistant to the editor in chief at Mode, the highest of high-fashion magazines. She makes a splash on her first day when she shows up with her metal braces and gaudy Guadalajara poncho while everyone else is kitted out in Manolos and Marc Jacobs. In addition to being the laughingstock of the skinny, snotty staff, she also learns publishing mogul Bradford Meade has only hired her because he's sure his son Daniel - Mode's new editor in chief - won't sleep with her.

Yet no amount of humiliation (and there's a lot of humiliation) can deter the spunky Betty, who quickly proves herself a valuable member of the Mode staff. She saves fashion spreads, covers for her boss while he nurses hangovers, and talks a famous photographer who'd sworn off working with Mode into shooting for them again. She's even been offered a job at a new magazine that targets empowered young women. But will Betty really leave behind her Mode job and her friendship with Daniel? We'll have to wait till January to see.

The mystery
The previous Mode editor in chief, Fey Sommers, died in a fiery car crash ... or did she? What we know so far: The catty creative director, Wilhelmina Slater, spends lots of time on the phone with a shadowy woman whose face is wrapped in bandages. Daniel keeps getting phone calls from a woman who hints that Daniel's father is keeping secrets. And Bradford, who had an affair with Fey years ago, appears connected to her death, though he's now trying to cover his tracks.

To hear more about Betty and Mode,

Daniel and Sofia
Let's just say Daniel really likes to sleep around. Like, a lot. At one point, Betty's sent to retrieve his watch from the apartment of a woman he's slept with and ends up finding his boxers and ties strewn all over New York City. One of his on-again, off-again romances is with Amanda, the Mode receptionist who desperately wants to make Daniel hers. But everything changes when Daniel spots the beautiful, sexy, self-assured Sofia walking through the lobby of the Meade building. Turns out, Bradford has hired Sofia to launch a new magazine for smart, empowered women. Daniel falls for her and even decides he's ready to settle down, but Sofia's not convinced Daniel won't go back to his philandering ways. He's bought engagement rings but hasn't proposed yet. To complicate things, Betty has recommended that Amanda take over as Daniel's assistant if Betty leaves for the job at Sofia's magazine. Could Daniel really keep his hands off?

Betty's personal life
One of the biggest twists so far came at home. Betty finds out her father once killed a man in Mexico out of self-defense, then fled the country and has been living in the United States illegally for years. Betty already did a lot to support her family, but she's really feeling the pressure to find a way to save her dad. Betty's also got some choices to make in her love life: She's been trying to work things out with Walter, her wet blanket of a boyfriend, but now her palms sweat and her heart flutters every time she crosses the path of her co-worker Henry.

"Ugly Betty" returns Jan. 4, but you can catch up on anything you missed by watching all the episodes online.

Season Recap: "The O.C."

Season four of Fox's "The O.C." got off to a rocky start. Given, a few hitches are expected when your main characters move into a new phase of their lives (e.g., graduating from high school), but the early part of the season was sorely lacking the campy melodrama we know and love. However, if you stopped watching after the first few episodes of Season 4, you should tune back in in January, because it's getting good again. (You can even sign a petition to save "The O.C.") Here's a recap of the season so far.

Just in case you missed it-maybe you live in Encino or something-Marissa Cooper died at the end of Season 3.

While Summer escapes to Brown University, Ryan defers college to take a job at a bar, Seth is working at the comic book store, and Taylor travels to France.

To see the rest,

In a particularly ridiculous plot twist, Ryan begins brawling in Fight Club-like matches hosted by his bar. Summer flies home to see if Ryan is ok, and she and the Cohens arrange a comic-book-themed intervention to show how he saved them all.

Seth and Ryan head down to Mexico to find Volchok and avenge Marissa's death, but Seth tells him to turn himself in. Back in Newport, Sandy negotiates with Volchok and lets Ryan have closure, which involves confronting and punching Volchok.

Taylor secretly returns to Newport to escape her misguided marriage to some French dude, but her mom kicks her out of the house and she goes to live with the Coopers. In helping her through her divorce, Ryan ends up planting a passionate kiss on Taylor, which later leads to them becoming an item.

Julie returns to NewMatch to work with Kirsten, and the two soon get funding from an oil tycoon named Bullitt, who brings a lot of hot new male clients to the business. Next thing Julie knows, Bullitt is pursuing her, and the hot male clients have turned NewMatch into a male prostitution ring, a fact that Kirsten still isn't privy to.

At college, Summer poses as a tree-hugging liberal after meeting a "revolutionary" "hippie" named Che. She's torn between the new Summer and the old summer who loves Seth. Later, Che encourages her to free some bunnies from a lab and ultimately gets her kicked out of school, so Summer returns to Newport and to Seth.

Ryan finally admits he wants to date Taylor, and so he plans a New Year's trip to Las Vegas that Seth and Summer tag along on. Summer has a pregnancy scare, which turns out to be false, but which still prompts Seth to ask her to marry him. She awkwardly accepts.

Bullitt hires a mystery man named Frank to put NewMatch's books in order, and Sandy thinks he looks vexingly familiar. At the end of the last episode, we learned that Frank is actually Ryan's real dad.

To find out what happens next, tune in when "The O.C." returns on Thursday, Jan. 4!

Season Recap: "Friday Night Lights"

"Friday Night Lights," which started its first season this fall, takes us to the heart of Dillon, Texas, an impoverished town that doesn't have much going for it besides its high school football stars. The mayor speaks at pep rallies, the radio stations constantly chatter about the team, and the fans will settle for nothing less than a state championship.

Coach Eric Taylor took over as the new coach of the Dillon Panthers this season and immediately faced a tragedy when star quarterback Jason Street was paralyzed making a tackle. Since then, Dillon has struggled to rally around the team, questioning the coach's decisions and facing the reality that even the best Panther players are just teenagers trying to muddle their way through high school.

Here are some of the highlights so far:

Jason's girlfriend, cheerleader Lyla Garrity, stays perky and positive even in the aftermath of Jason's injury. But the pressures of being the supportive girlfriend ultimately get to her, and she somehow ends up in the arms - and the bed - of Jason's teammate and best friend, Tim Riggins, who blames himself for Jason's botched tackle.

Gawky sophomore Matt Saracen takes over at quarterback and becomes at least competent, leading the team to a winning record. His new status as a team star causes some tension with his old nerdy friends. He also takes a liking to the coach's bookish daughter, Julie, who returns his affections - much to the dismay of Coach Taylor, who can't deal with his daughter dating at all, but especially not dating one of his players.

Two more, so

Jason regains the use of his hands and adjusts to life in a wheelchair, but he still hasn't gotten over the betrayal by Lyla and Riggins. After he channels some of his old athletic prowess into a game of quad rugby, he pours the rest of it into punching Riggins in the nose. As we went to the break, he still hasn't forgiven either one of them.

Star running back Smash Williams puts in a poor performance in front of a college scout, so he goes behind his mother's back and uses the donations his church has given him for an SAT prep class to buy steroids instead. His drug habit was almost uncovered in the last episode.

The show moves to its new 8 p.m. Wednesday time slot starting with three repeats airing tonight, and you can see all the episodes online for free. The next new episode is scheduled for Jan. 3.

Season Recap: "Desperate Housewives"

Desperate Housewives was not at its best last season, and many people felt the series got a little cheesy and muddled. The first ten episodes of Season 3 seem promising, though, with many of the same old characters and antics, but also with new mysteries to mull over. In case you need a refresher course in what’s been going on so far on Wisteria Lane, read on.

Lynette
Lynette grapples with the challenge of including Tom’s child Kayla in the Scavos’ lives, while trying to avoid Kayla’s mother, Nora. Nora, meanwhile, uses Kayla to manipulate her way into as many of the Scavo activities as possible. Tom decides he wants to leave the advertising world and open a pizza parlor, though Lynette thinks it’s a terrible and risky idea. Claiming to support Tom in whatever he does, Nora comes on to Tom, who rejects her. Then Lynette awesomely kicks open Nora’s door and tells her to keep her interactions with her husband and family strictly to dropping off Kayla at the house.

The following episode, titled “Bang” was the big shocker episode of the season. To find out why,

Carolyn Bigsby, neighbor and friend to Orson’s ex-wife Alma, is on a mission to hunt down her cheating husband, Harvey. She enters a crowded grocery store with a gun and holds everyone hostage as her way of making Harvey talk to her. Carolyn shoots Nora who, just before dying, asks Lynette to raise Kayla as her own daughter. Carolyn tries to shoot Lynette as well when Art, the new neighbor on Wisteria Lane, throws off Carolyn’s aim so the bullet only strikes Lynette’s shoulder. Edie’s nephew Austin tackles Carolyn to the ground and then a woman shoots her in the head.

One day Lynette and her son Parker come across Art’s basement which is full of toys and a pinball machine, as well as a wall of photographs of young boys in swimsuits. Lynette suspects him of sinister things and her suspicions ignite the neighbors’ fury towards Art. Art’s wheelchair-bound sister Rebecca lives with him, and she tells Lynette she is ruining their lives. When Art shows up at the holiday block party dressed as Santa Claus, he and Rebecca get the cold shoulder from all the neighbors. The stress is too much for Rebecca in her condition, and she dies. As Art is packing up to leave Wisteria Lane, he sneers menacingly at Lynette, and creepily alludes to the idea that now that Rebecca is gone he won’t have to hide his true self anymore.

Gaby
The first ten episodes of this season could be called The Gaby and Carlos Fights. It’s the usual antics, times ten: over-the-top arguments, stubbornness, and vengeance, all jumbled up and confused with passion and affection. They ultimately call a truce, however, after seeing the real violence at the grocery store.

Xiao Mei’s water breaks at Bree and Orson’s wedding, yet when the baby is born, it is clearly African-American, and the fertility clinic admits that sometimes mistakes happen. During a spa weekend, Gaby runs into John, all grown up and sexier than ever. They enjoy a for-old-times-sake romp before Gaby learns that John is engaged, and, after the spa tryst, doesn’t want to continue to see Gaby for fear of losing his wife-to-be.

Gaby hopes to spark up her modeling career again but only manages to get a photo shoot in which she poses as the frumpy mother of a hot teenage girl. Frustrated and insecure, Gaby takes up an offer to teach beauty pageant skills to little girls. As a bonus, Gaby meets a gorgeous single dad, Bill, and the two start a promising flirtation.

Susan
After months of visiting Mike in the hospital, Susan hesitantly agrees to go on a date with Ian, a fellow caretaker of a comatose loved one. The two start dating, and then spend a weekend away together. Over this romantic weekend, Edie accidentally witnesses Mike waking up from his coma with a hazy memory, and she moves in on him, badmouthing Susan, and convincing Mike that he was in love with Edie. Thus, when Susan returns to Mike’s hospital room, overjoyed at his recovery, he is chilly toward her. Susan learns of Edie’s cruel tricks and is heartbroken, having no way to convince Mike otherwise.
Adding insult to injury, Edie’s nephew Austin comes to live with Edie and he starts flirting with Susan’s daughter Julie. Susan, believing Austin to be a bad influence, tries to end their relationship, but Julie ignores her mother’s wishes.

Susan learns from Carolyn Bigsby that Orson was the prime suspect in his wife’s murder, but when they searched his house, everything had been cleaned with bleach. When a woman’s body shows up, police think it might be Orson’s former wife, Alma, and they begin an investigation. There is a phone number written on her wrist which turns out to be for Mike’s plumbing service. When questioned, Mike’s memory loss prevents him from being able to give any solid answers. However, he does have a flashback to seeing a woman who looks like Alma or Monique in lingerie. The police take him to jail and, fearing that Mike might be guilty, Edie breaks up with him. Susan tells Mike she believes he’s innocent, even if he himself doubts it.

Determined to find evidence against Orson, Susan sneaks into his office and discovers a document showing that Orson was admitted into a mental institute in 1981. She takes the document to use in Mike’s case. Ian tells Susan he will pay for the best lawyer in town to bail Mike out if she promises to never see him again. She agrees.

Bree
After just two weeks of being engaged, Bree and Orson get married. At the reception, however, the police show up and bring the newlyweds into the station to view a body that may be Alma’s. Orson says it isn’t, but whispers an endearment to the body, calling her “Monique,” just before leaving the room.

Bree sees Andrew on a news special about homeless teenagers and tracks him down. He is resistant to coming home with her, but ultimately shows up on her doorstep. Meanwhile, Bree finds out that her daughter Danielle is seeing her history teacher, Mr. Faladi, and she goes to Mr. Faladi’s house with Danielle’s luggage, insisting Danielle move in with him if they are to continue with the affair. Mr. Faladi hastily breaks things off with Danielle who is so furious, she tells the school officials and Mrs. Faladi.

Carolyn Bigsby continuously warns Bree about Orson while Carolyn’s husband Harvey admits to Orson that he’s been having an affair with a French woman named Monique. Harvey says he is upset because Monique seems to have disappeared. Orson soon tips off the police to Harvey’s involvement with Monique, and the police take him in for questioning in Monique’s murder. Bree learns of Harvey's infidelity, and she tells Carolyn about Monique. This causes Carolyn to go on her rampage at the grocery store.

Since the holidays are coming up, Bree tracks down Orson’s mother, Gloria, and insists Gloria come live with them, to Orson’s frustration. Gloria proves a miserable house mate and tells Bree that Orson was cheating on Alma with Monique. Orson later explains that he and Alma became pregnant and were married for the sake of the child. Alma miscarried, but Gloria would not hear of divorce, so Orson resigned himself to an unhappy marriage with Alma. He then met Monique, and fell in love with her. Bree buys his story, and the two rent Gloria a condo to get her out of their lives. When Gloria’s ride shows up, we see that it’s Orson’s first wife, Alma!

Season Recap: "Grey's Anatomy"

It hasn't been an easy year so far at Seattle Grace Hospital. The doctors of "Grey's Anatomy" have been in turmoil ever since the season two finale, when Izzie crossed ethical lines in an attempt to save a patient she loved, leading to Burke's shooting. This season has focused on how the consequences of Izzie's actions continue to change lives at Seattle Grace. It's a far cry from the "Grey's" of season one, when all the drama came from doctors sleeping with each other - though of course, there's still plenty of that too.

The show's central storyline has been the plight of Burke, who was once one of the finest heart surgeons in the country and now wonders if he can ever wield a scalpel again. The operation Derek performed to fix nerve damage in Burke's arm left him with a hand tremor, but Derek - who's distracted by other things, namely the demise of his marriage and his lust for a certain intern named Meredith - clears Burke for surgery. Burke knows he shouldn't be operating, but Cristina offers to help him. They become a team, "a well-oiled machine," as Cristina says.

But soon their illusion starts to fall apart. You'll see what I mean if you

Bailey gets suspicious after she's taken off one of Burke's surgeries, and George - whose friendship with Burke was one of the sweetest parts of season two - notices Burke's hand shaking on a fishing trip and realizes he and Cristina are hiding something. Everything comes to a head when George's father needs heart surgery. George knows too much now to trust Burke's unsteady hands and confronts Cristina. Meanwhile, the Chief decides to retire and asks Burke to take over the top job. Overcome with guilt, Cristina spills to the Chief about Burke's tremor, sending the entire hospital into a frenzy. Whether Burke can forgive Cristina, and whether he can operate again, will be two of the hot storylines to watch in the coming episodes.

Meanwhile, Izzie is dealing with the loss of both her fiance and her identity as a surgeon. Her memories of Denny make it hard to walk through the hospital doors, but Burke ultimately tells her something that helps her recommit to medicine: "You've got two good hands, and you're not using them." Now she's not allowed to treat, touch or talk to any patients while she earns back everyone's trust. She's also debating what to do with the millions she inherited when Denny died; for now, the check remains stuck to her fridge with a magnet.

And oh, Meredith. Torn between Derek and Finn, Meredith comes up with a novel idea: dating! Both men shower her with ice cream and buy her dinner, leading to Meredith's best line of the season so far: "I'm dating, and it comes with snacks." But Derek decides to step out of the race, telling Meredith that Finn is the better man. That's all it takes for Meredith to realize she wants to be with Derek after all, and despite a slow start, their romance is now back in full swing.

Other highlights:

Addison continues to be totally awesome. After discovering Meredith's panties in Derek's pocket, she pins them to a bulletin board for all to see, then gets drunk and sleeps with Mark "McSteamy" Sloane, whom she'd apparently called in from New York for the occasion. She and Derek finalize their divorce, and McSteamy takes a job at Seattle Grace to try and woo Addison back to him for good. So far she's fended off Mark's advances, but she and Alex did lock eyes for one looong moment - will that be the next intern/doctor romance?

Bailey's confidence takes hit when first Izzie, then Cristina, veer into unethical medicine. Other doctors suggest that maybe having a baby made her go soft, but in the last episode before the break, the Chief reassures Bailey that the interns are like children: Some might disappoint her, but she's also responsible for all the good things they do.

The Chief chose work over his wife, but now he wants to retire and go back to her. With Burke unable to operate, it's unclear whether the chief will be able to return to his home life after all. He has also stopped visiting Meredith's mother, with whom he had an affair years ago.

George and Callie continue their own special brand of romance, which basically boils down to one rejecting the other, then trying to apologize.

Alex attempts to suck up to Mark because he realizes that getting in good with one of the country's best plastic surgeons could bode well for his own career. But when his work boils down to getting coffee and fetching dry cleaning, Alex decides to move on. He's been a sweetheart to Izzie so far this season, and whatever's happening with Addison could prove interesting.

"Grey's" returns with new episodes Jan. 11. Given the rumors that someone gets engaged and someone gets pregnant, I'll definitely be tuning in.

Glee-Ful Highlights From Episode "New York"

After a long season of wishin' and hopin' and thinkin' and prayin', the New Directions finally live out their dream to perform at Nationals in NYC on this week's episode of Glee. Their week in the Big Apple is full of expectations as each of the gleeks has their own ideas about how to experience New York. Of course, there's also the competition to prepare for, and - oops! - they haven't written their songs yet. (Um, seriously, Mr. Schue?)

Finn is still doing everything he can to get back into Rachel's good graces, but she's too distracted by the bright lights and big city. Meanwhile, Mr. Schuester has his own business to take care of: he has to decide once and for all if he's going to leave the club for Broadway. Overall it's a sweet, sappy kinda season finale, but the NYC backdrop makes it a fun episode (there's even a couple of surprises along the way). Let's recap when you

Glee doesn't get to step outside McKinley High all that often, so I was eating up all of the New York eye candy this week. Rachel definitely exudes a bit of a Dorthy-in-Oz vibe, and for good reason. Madonna's "I Love New York" isn't the Queen of Pop's best track, but watching the kids geek out and frolic around the city makes for a cute scene.

Determined to win Rachel's heart, Finn turns to the guys for advice (because the girls are busy having a pillow fight. Really.). Puck suggests he re-create a romantic comedy-style date, so Finn and Rachel get all gussied up for dinner. It's a sweet scene (even when Patti Lupone interrupts Finn for a cameo), but even the moonlight and Finn's Abba one-liner ("take a chance on me!") aren't enough to get Rachel locking lips with her ex again.

As it turns out, Rachel's got no time for love; she's too busy planning her future in New York. She and Kurt have a heart-to-heart outside of Tiffany's where they both decide to make a break for Manhattan after graduation. Kurt suggests that Rachel bring Finn along, but Rachel doesn't seem convinced.

When Nationals finally arrives, the club has managed to put "My Cup" aside to make room for some pretty good original songs. Just before Rachel and Finn take the stage to duet, Rachel tells Finn about her New York dreams and that she's not willing to give up on her plans, even though she loves him. They sing a love ballad that's charged with emotion - in fact, it's a little too charged: Finn plants a big one on Rachel at the end of the number that leaves the crowd speechless.

Jesse St. James makes a quick appearance (mostly to give Finn a hard time about the kiss), but even a spat with Finn doesn't get much attention, because the Nationals Top 10 are posted. As a viewer, with only 10 minutes left in the episode, I pretty much already knew what Mr. Schuester confirms: the New Directions didn't make the cut. It's a sad moment for the club, but I'm willing to bet the third time (in senior year) will be the charm. Plus, those girls that sang Usher were pret-ty good.

Back at school, we get a quick rundown on how everyone's feeling. Mr. Schuester seems content with his decision to return to McKinley (with his arm around Emma, no less), and Kurt and Blaine drop the L-bomb for the first time. In a rare moment of sagacity, Brittany convinces Santana that another year with the glee club is something to celebrate, rather than harping on the sadness of losing, and the two share a sweet embrace. Of course, the big shocker is that Sam and Mercedes are dating! It's not the most obvious pairing (I still kinda miss Quinn and Sam), but at least Mercedes finally gets a man! It's about time.

And of course, the clincher: Rachel and Finn bump into each other in the library, where Finn is beating himself up about kissing Rachel during their duet. Rachel assures him that it was just a crime of passion, and they both admit that they're glad it happened. Rachel tries again to pull away from Finn because of New York, but Finn states what we've all been thinking throughout the whole episode: there's still a whole year left before graduation! As if Rachel had never considered this before, she acquiesces and they get back together. (I have to admit that I did a little dance when they kissed.) The real surprise is that Quinn seems supportive when they see her in the choir room for their meeting.

What are your thoughts on the finale? Are you happy Finn and Rachel kissed and made up? What do you think of Mercedes and Sam as a couple? Let's chat for the last time before Summer hiatus!
