What to Download: New Music This Week

Happy new-tunes Tuesday! We've already covered the DVD releases hitting shelves, but I'm particularly jazzed for this week's music offerings - rock, hip-hop, and . . . disco?! Take a look!

Disco fever: The fun-loving Scissor Sisters are back with Night Work, an album full of energetic songs fit for Saturday Night Fever. "Any Which Way" calls to mind the Bee Gees, using high falsetto with tongue-in-cheek (and often blatantly dirty) lyrics that recall '70s nostalgia, while "Harder You Get" takes a grittier tone. Pay special attention to a cameo from Sir Ian McKellen on "Invisible Light." Yes, really.

Rockers exposed: Wolf Parade brings us new music on their LP Expo '86, named for the World's Fair. The latest from the Canadian indie group is a solid collection of new tunes that keeps up a good pace and energy right until the last song, "Cave-O-Sapien." The second track, "Palm Road," is the one that will be stuck in your head, but I'm partial to "Little Golden Age," with beats that remind me of '80s punk.

read more. Sweet dreams: Smooth-voiced hip-hopper The-Dream brings his soulful charisma to his new album, Love King, a disc full of sometimes raunchy but slick Summer jams. My favorites are his collaborations with T.I., like the dirty-but-sexy "F.I.L.A."; I dare you to resist moving your hips. T.I. also lends himself to the single "Make Up Bag," a melodic lesson for men who cross their ladies (just buy them a new handbag). Other tracks with irresistible beats you can be sure to hear on radio repeat soon are "Florida University" and the title track.

FABTV: Scissor Sisters "Kiss You Off"

Thank goodness for the Scissor Sisters. They are the closest thing we have to glam rock nowadays. This band from New York is also an extreme pleasure to see in concert - Fab recommended. As for this video, I dedicate it to my gal pal Bella. The mod beauty shop setting and pseudo Japanese cosmetics commercial scenes are pretty rad. And Ana Matronic, in her white and silver sci-fi dress and funky metallic makeup is a sight to see - love her. Oh! And how cool is it when she has multiple arms with scissor hands circling around her? "Kiss you off my lips . . . Well I think I'm gonna buy me a brand new shade of man."

Apparently, this hilarious site, Dance Sister Dance has been around for a while, but I just found it today and had to share. The Scissor Sisters are letting fans record their own "music videos" to the tune of the band's single, "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'." To make yours, just upload photos of yourself and a friend (I decided to pair myself with new James Bond, Daniel Craig), chose your costume, wig, and dance style, and the site does the rest. Trust me, it's inexplicably hilarious.

Whose Job Is It to Cut the Cord?

The other day, my sister was here admiring some of Esther's paintings, and said,

"Esther, when you're a famous artist, I'm going to tell everyone it was me who cut your umbilical cord."

I had to laugh. I had nearly forgotten that it was my sister, Aunt Cindy, not my husband, who physically separated my first baby from me.

Not that Ian wasn't given the chance. They asked him, and he said, "No thanks."

I'm sure he was thinking, "Not bloody likely."

I wasn't surprised. While he is the handiest of handy men, calm and cool in a crisis, level headed to the core, severing live tissue that connects mother and child isn't quite the same as hanging a door.

Ian and I are the same when it comes to being medically squeamish.

I remember my midwife asking me if I wanted to see Esther's head crowning in the mirror.

"Not particularly," I said.

"If you reach down, you can feel her head coming," she pressed.

"No thanks," I answered. I'll take your word for it."

I could try and blame this on exhaustion– I had been pushing for 3.5 hours, after 29 hours of Pitocin labor, when she finally crowned.

But, after a meager 15-odd hours of labor and one hour of pushing with Isla, I had the same exact answer: "No thanks. Please just let me get on with getting this baby the heck out of me."

And as for the cord. Ian declined the second time as well. I guess the midwife must have cut it. (My sister didn't come back for the second time. I don't blame her.)

Looking around, I have learned that I'm not alone in having a squeamish husband. In this BabyCenter poll, 66 percent of fathers did cut the cord, while 34 percent did not.

But there might be more to it than squeamishness. It's hard to deny the symbolism in physically severing a newborn baby from its mother. Could this be what's really behind the reluctance?

Julianne Moore Named Kiehl's New Global Ambassador

Break out the white lab coats because Julianne Moore has just been announced as one of Kiehl's new Global Ambassadors, alongside Pharrell Williams and the Scissor Sisters. She's worked with Kiehl's before, helping to design limited-edition packaging for a charitable initiative last year, and now, she'll be helping to support Kiehl's Gives, a global philanthropic initiative.

In particular, Julianne will be backing Save the Children, an organization that serves youths in need.

"There are school systems where there isn't enough money for even the basics, where there is extreme poverty. I could see this even as a kid, so when I had the chance to make a difference as an adult, it was important to me to do so," Julianne explained to WWD. Julianne, who is known for her involvement with various charities, seems to make the perfect match for the socially conscious brand. Do you agree?

Selma Blair, Leigh Lezark, Keri Hilson, Akon, and More Get Together For H&M's Fashion Against AIDS Collection

H&M turned up the volume for its fourth Fashion Against AIDS collection with a cool unisex collection featuring a top-notch list of supporters including Selma Blair, Leigh Lezark and her Misshapes crew, Penn Badgley, Keri Hilson, Sky Ferreira, Akon, Nikki Reed, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scissor Sisters, and Shiloh Fernandez. "I think it's really fitting that this collection is androgynous in style since the disease affects both men and women," said Selma Blair. "It's a universal thing and we are all in this together. It's a disease that can be avoided and it's especially tragic when our ignorance keeps us from safety."

The H&M Fashion Against AIDS collection will be available in H&M's Divided department starting April 26, with 25 percent of sales donated to the charity Designers Against AIDS (DAA) and various international HIV/AIDS prevention projects.
