Sci Fi Is Going All Out to Promote Battlestar's Final Season

If you go to a popular sci fi website on Friday and find it blacked out, don't worry. It hasn't been shut down. It's just the site's little reminder that you should be watching Battlestar Galactica right then instead of killing time online.

The sci fi site blackout is just one of many - and I mean many - efforts by the Sci Fi channel to give Battlestar, which is about to begin its fourth and last season, a big-time launch for its final bow. The cast has presented the Top 10 List on Late Show with David Letterman, and Sci Fi has gotten avowed geeks like Joss Whedon and Joel McHale to sing the show's praises on camera.

There's more: TiVo is running a sweepstakes that offers prizes to viewers who watch the premiere live or nearly live, and select pizza parlors in New York or LA will offer free pies to callers who demand to "order a frakkin' pizza" and can correctly answer some Battlestar trivia. And of course we've already seen the eight-minute summary video that aims to get newbies up to speed by the time the new season premieres.

It's a pretty big push for a pretty niche show (it averaged fewer than 2 million viewers per episode during its third season), so I'm wondering: Have any of these promotions gotten you psyched to watch Battlestar? You can watch a promo for the new season if you read more.

Catch Up on Battlestar Galactica in Eight and a Half Minutes

Sci Fi's Battlestar Galactica is one of those shows that people always tell me I'd be hooked on instantly if only I gave it a chance. The show returns at the end of this month and, perhaps hoping to hook potential viewers like me just in time, Sci Fi has come up with an eight and a half minute summary of everything that's happened in the show's first three seasons, following in the footsteps of similar quickie summaries of The Wire, The Sopranos, and Lost.

I love that this clip starts basic: "A battlestar is like a great big aircraft carrier, but instead of airplanes, they've got Vipers and Raptors and other cool spaceships." I'm also beginning to appreciate why my Battlestar-loving friends say "frak" so much. Longtime fans, how do you think this measures up? First Look: Sci Fi's Take on "Tin Man"

This winter, Sci Fi is putting a new spin on The Wizard of Oz. The network's six-hour miniseries, "Tin Man," is a dark reimagining of the classic story set in modern times. Zooey Deschanel plays DG, a girl with a fairly boring life who is suddenly thrust into a magical realm known as the O.Z., filled with odd creatures such as Glitch (Alan Cumming), who's missing half his brain, and Raw (Raoul Trujillo), a wolverine of sorts who longs for courage.

Pop and I got the scoop on "Tin Man" over the summer, but the trailer is finally online for all to see, and I have to say, it looks pretty cool. The special effects are spellbinding even on the tiny YouTube player, and Zooey seems like just the right choice for the shell-shocked DG. Joshua Jackson Sets His Sights on a UFO

Looks like Joshua Jackson is ready to take his sci-fi acting experience from Fringe to the big screen. The actor will star in UFO, a film adaptation of the British TV series from the '70s. Jackson will play leading man Paul Foster, a test pilot who must protect our planet from a new race of body-snatching extraterrestrials.

As a bonus, Matthew Gratzner - the man behind Iron Man and Superman Returns - is on board for special effects, so you know Jackson's pretty face won't be the only stunning visual.

We haven't seen a whole lot of Jackson on the silver screen recently, so I'm looking forward to his triumphant return - even if alien entertainment isn't exactly my favorite genre. What do you make of this news? Are you familiar with the original TV show?

Brad Pitt Enters the Dark Void

Introducing Brad Pitt, computer game star: the actor's production company Plan B has signed off on a deal with Capcom to adapt the game Dark Void for the big screen with Pitt as the lead. Void follows a pilot who crashes in the Bermuda Triangle and finds himself in an alternate universe fighting off aliens intent on taking over the human race.

This seems more like Will Smith territory to me - I immediately think of something along the lines of I, Robot or I Am Legend. Even so, I welcome the chance to see Pitt in a sci-fi action movie, and this storyline sounds tailor-made for the blockbuster treatment.

Zachary Quinto to Raise Eyebrows as Leading Man in Whirligig

It seems I wasn't the only one to think that Zachary Quinto's Spock stole the hot man show in Star Trek last Summer. Quinto is attached to the upcoming indie film Whirligig, playing a guy who becomes friends with the adopted son of the woman he's pursuing.

Not only would this be Quinto's first major role post-Star Trek, but he'd be the leading man in a romantic comedy-drama. I make no attempt to hide how smitten I am with Quinto, and can definitely see the tall, sexy actor take on a role that's less of a sci-fi than Star Trek and Heroes. We only got a teeny smidgen of his romantic side when his Spock wooed Uhura - I'd love to see that extended to a couple hours.

Twilight Leads the People's Choice Awards Nominations

The 36th annual People's Choice Awards nominees are here, and last year's Twilight is leading the charge! American Idol's Kris Allen was among the announcers this morning for the nominees, which also include lots of nods for The Proposal - but of course, everyone's favorite bloodsucking love story landed in many categories, including favorite on-screen movie team.

Why didn't they look to 2009's New Moon? Because last year's nominations debuted before the first movie in the Twilight saga.

Jake Gyllenhaal May Be Thrilling Audiences With Source Code

It seems so long since we've seen Jake Gyllenhaal on screen (2007 in Rendition, to be exact), so I'm glad that we're about to get a lot more of him. Next month we'll catch him in Brothers, then in the Spring all buffed up in Prince of Persia - and he won't be slowing down. Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in the sci-fi thriller Source Code.

The geeky-titled flick is about a soldier (ostensibly played by Gyllenhaal) who "wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it." These days it seems like Gyllenhaal is balancing his more emotional roles (like in Brothers) with some aggressive action flicks. I don't mind - whatever the genre, I'm just happy to welcome him back to the theater.
