Box Office: Paranormal Activity Spooks Its Way to No. 1

Talk about a shocker! The low-budget underdog Paranormal Activity has been riding its growing popularity all the way to the top - even upsetting the reigning king of horror, the Saw franchise. Paranormal took in $22 million in its first weekend with a wide release, which has execs talking about a possible sequel. Saw VI trailed at No. 2 with only $14.8 million - the worst opening ever for a Saw film.

Completing the rest of the top five was last week's biggest moneymaker, Where the Wild Things Are, which dropped to No. 3 with $14.4 million, followed by Law Abiding Citizen at No. 4 with $12.7 million, and Couples Retreat at No. 5 with $11 million. (The box office newcomers Cirque du Freak and Amelia placed No. 8 and No. 11, respectively.)

Would You Go to a Saw-Themed Haunted House?

For all of you who get a thrill from scary movies and haunted houses, you can start planning now to check out a Saw-themed haunted house this Halloween season. Apparently, the FrightDome in Las Vegas's Circus Circus will open two "Saw Attractions" areas that will attempt to replicate Jigsaw's terrifying games from the Saw movies. About the attractions, Fright Dome owner Jason Egan said, "The Saw films cut to the core of human fear and we're using that to its fullest potential." How they'll safely re-create scenes from this horror movie franchise is beyond me.

Yikes. I can hardly sit through one Saw movie, much less put myself in a fake situation with Jigsaw. Actually, just seeing Jigsaw's freaky mask-head face thing would probably make me vomit, or pass out, or both. But I may be more squeamish than others. What do you think?

For any Saw (or Saw 2 through 4) fans out there, this Thursday some AMC theaters are showing a Saw marathon just before the fifth movie is released this Friday. Will you check this out at a theater near you?

I know many people who like the Saw movies (or at least the first one) even if they're not huge fans of the horror genre itself. For some, the psychological aspect makes the movies more interesting than your average gory flick. Do you agree? Is Saw different than others in the genre?

All eyes were on Camila Alves's sparkling engagement ring, which she proudly displayed for the cameras. Camila and longtime boyfriend Matthew McConaughey became engaged over the holidays, but this is the first we've seen of the three-stone bauble. Camila and Matthew are just one of many cute celebrity couples in Hollywood, though Camila was without her man yesterday. New York Fashion Week officially starts today, but Camila helped kick off the festivities at the QVC event, which also saw support from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and Olivia Palermo.

What Is Twig Tea, Anyway?

Alicia Silverstone claims that twig tea, also called kukicha, cures just about everything. And we've been noticing it appearing in more and more stores (we also saw it a few times at the Fancy Food Show). But what's the deal with all of the hype?

Twig tea is essentially a Japanese blend of the tough stems, stalks, and twigs from the Camellia sinensis plant. These bits usually get discarded, but when they're saved, toasted, and steeped in water, kukicha is formed. The flavor is nutty and slightly creamy, and since most of the caffeine is stored in the leaves of the plant, you won't get the same buzz from a cup of this stuff as you would a cup of green or black tea, so this is a great option for anyone trying to eliminate caffeine from his or her life. Its alkalizing properties and low caffeine level also make it a beverage of choice for the macrobiotic diet.

Kukicha tastes deliciously rich and toasted, which is the perfect way to start your day (in fact, there is a quality about it that reminds me of a good cup of coffee). Steep your twig tea in freshly boiled water for four to five minutes. Have you ever tried it?
