Movie Preview: Did You Hear About the Morgans?

I wonder if this movie, Did You Hear About the Morgans?, was one of those things that sounded good as a concept, but somehow deflated in execution? Opening around the holidays, the movie tells the story of the Morgans, an unhappily married couple who witness a murder and are spotted by the killer. Thus, they need to leave their slick Manhattan lifestyles behind and go into the witness relocation program in Wyoming where - you guessed it - they slow down and focus on each other enough that their marriage might actually get a second chance.

I think it's supposed to be a romantic comedy, but I have watched this new trailer a few times and I keep searching for something funny in it, and (besides Sarah Jessica Parker running after a horse at the end) I keep coming up dry. Maybe you'll have better luck, so to check it out, read more.

Is Prospect Park West the New Sex and the City?

Women, friendships, the hustle and bustle of New York life, Sarah Jessica Parker . . . where have I heard this one before? But I'm not talking about Sex and the City this time. I'm talking about Prospect Park West, a soon-to-be-released novel that Parker and her production company reportedly bought to turn into a TV show.

Now, Prospect Park West isn't exactly a clone of SATC. Instead of Manhattan, this book from former New York columnist Amy Sohn heads across the bridge to Brooklyn. And instead of saucy singles, it's a story about dissatisfied wives and mothers in the Desperate Housewives mold. The characters, as described by Publishers Weekly, are:

Lizzie, whose lesbian proclivities mask her loneliness; Rebecca, whose libidoless spouse prefers his role as dad over husband; Karen, a social-climbing conniver; and Melora, a former Manhattanite whose psychiatric maladies are as pathetic as they are numerous. The gals in this comedy of bad manners are burned out, b*tchy and beyond salvation as they maneuver to be noticed and loved.

Plenty of shows (and books) have tried to replicate the SATC magic and fallen a little short, so I'm wondering: Do you think focusing on dissatisfied mommies can set this apart? Does it sound like it's tailor-made to be a TV show? And do we even need a new Sex and the City?

Sex and the City 2 Gets a Release Date

Get ready for some sexual healing . . . in about 13 months. The Sex and the City sequel has a release date, and it's the same slot that the first SATC had: May 28, 2010.

Many of you voted in favor of a SATC sequel last year, and when asked about your hopes and dreams for the second movie, you had a variety of suggestions ranging from wanting to see the women at work more to seeing Samantha in a strong relationship with a man her own age. The overall consensus was definitely no more Big drama and wishing that this sequel were actually a prequel.

Well, whatever it ends up being, it's now on the calendars and coming to theaters near all of us next May. Fabulous?

Meet Your Washingtoniennes: HBO Casts Its Leading Ladies

HBO has some interesting projects in the works these days, and one I'm definitely following is the adaptation of The Washingtonienne, which is being executive-produced by none other than Sarah Jessica Parker. The network has just picked its leading ladies, so let's meet the women who will soon be cavorting around Washington:

Rachael Taylor (left, best known for Transformers) will play Jackie, the central character who comes to DC from New York to work as a speechwriter but starts out as a lowly intern.
Bitsie Tulloch (center, best known for Quarterlife) will play April, a college friend of Jackie's and now her Capitol Hill mentor. She's living "a prematurely middle-age lifestyle" with her boyfriend, an aide to a high-powered senator.
Amanda Walsh (right, best known for Sons and Daughters and Disturbia) rounds out the trio as small-town girl Laura, a workaholic with conservative views that she's constantly having to defend.

Fans of the book, does any of this sound familiar? And whether you've read the book or not, do these sound like 20-somethings you'd want to get to know?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Smart People
I had high hopes for Smart People, mainly due to the stellar cast that includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page, Thomas Haden Church, and Dennis Quaid.

The story takes place near the Carnegie Mellon campus and centers around a family headed by a widowed professor (Quaid) who are all having a terrible time relating to each other and the outside world, despite how book smart they are. When the professor's free-spirited brother (Church) crashes into their lives they all start to thaw out a bit and discover how far a little humanity can go.

The movie didn't quite meet my expectations but it's certainly a worthwhile rental if you're looking for a few laughs and a genuinely talented ensemble cast.

Special features include interviews with the producers, cast and crew of the movie, commentary from the director and writer, a collection of outtakes, nine deleted scenes and exclusive footage from the premiere of Smart People at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

The Wire: Season Five
I still have not totally come to grips with the fact that this final season of The Wire was overlooked by Emmy voters. The show has spent years as one of the most consistently well reviewed shows on television, though its ratings were never high. Today the final piece of the puzzle, the show's fifth season, is out on DVD, and marks the final chapter of David Simon's epic saga about Baltimore with a critical look at the media.

The season got more criticism than most (maybe because the media had to see themselves, rather than police officers or teachers, through Simon's bleak lens), but that didn't make it any less satisfying for me. The 10 episodes wrap up many of the stories Simon and series co-creator Ed Burns had been working on for years, and even at the end, nothing about The Wire is ever too neat or tidy. Once again, the lines between good guys and bad guys end up blurred, and that's a big part of what makes the show so captivating.

Special features include "The Wire Odyssey: A Retrospective of the First Four Seasons," "The Wire: The Last Word - A Documentary Exploring the Role of the Media," and six audio commentaries with Simon and members of the cast and crew.

How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer
I just happened to read something yesterday about how difficult it is for studios to embrace and market smart movies that are for and about women, even after the huge success of Sex and the City. So, it's an interesting coincidence that an example of this phenomenon is out on DVD today. I hardly heard anything about this film, even though it received an 84% on RottenTomatoes and stars one of Hollywood's biggest young stars. What the heck?

Anyway, How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer is about three generations of Mexican women grappling with issues of romance and sexuality - at all stages of life. It looks compelling, thoughtful and relatable and I, for one, am stoked to see this. The movie stars America Ferrera, Elizabeth Peña, Lucy Gallardo, and Eliana Alexander and was screened in competition at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. (Yeah: 2005! Sheesh.)

TCA Tidbits: SJP's New HBO Project, Clone Wars, and More

Just a couple more days till I head out to the TCA press tour in Los Angeles! I hit the ground on Monday, and I'll give you some more scoop then about what's coming up for the next week or so. But for now, here are a few more tidbits from the cable sessions this week:

In addition to the new David Simon show set in New Orleans, HBO has ordered two other high-profile pilots. One, called The Washingtonienne, is based on Jessica Cutler's book of the same name about a party girl who takes on Capitol Hill, and it counts Sarah Jessica Parker among its producers. The other, which is as yet untitled, is based on a book about Atlantic City and has Martin Scorsese behind it.
Curb Your Enthusiasm is probably returning for a seventh season, most likely in late 2009.
On an interesting HBO note, True Blood's Alan Ball has never seen Buffy or Angel.

Over on TNT, Raising the Bar, starring a long-haired Mark-Paul Gosselaar, will be the first of three new network series hitting the air this Fall. It premieres on Sept. 1, followed by Trust Me, an advertising show formerly called Truth in Advertising and starring Eric McCormack, and Leverage, which stars Timothy Hutton as a justice-seeker working outside the law.

Critics got a first look at Star Wars: The Clone Wars from Cartoon Network. At least one was unimpressed but says the kids will probably love it.
CasaSugar fans, take note: TLC has two more home shows on the way.
The Planet Green series Leonardo DiCaprio produces, Greensburg, will get six more episodes.

Warner Bros. Hoping to Fast-Track the SATC Sequel

There was plenty of sequel chatter immediately following the major box office success of the Sex and the City movie, but now certain head honchos are confirming that there is "a lot of energy behind doing another SATC movie." According to EW, "a sequel to the Sex and the City movie is in the early stages of development."

HBO's president of programming group, Michael Lombardo, mentioned that they're "really heartened by the fans' enthusiasm," and a source confirmed that Warner Bros. hopes to fast-track the project, though there is still no deal and no script. In fact, EW notes that "the lead actresses involved are taking a cautious attitude towards another film, not wanting to rush a sequel and risk disappointing their loyal fans."

Tons of you have voted that you'd love to see a SATC sequel, though I have to wonder, what could this sequel be about? What would you like to see in a sequel? Babies? New non-white assistants? Even bigger shoe closets? Sound off below.

Sarah Jessica Parker May Star in The Ivy Chronicles

Sarah Jessica Parker playing a wealthy, fabulous Manhattanite?! No way! I know it's a huge stretch, but it looks like SJP may go back to filming in her beloved city for The Ivy Chronicles. Based on a novel by Karen Quinn, the project is said to be in the vein of other New York-set novels-turned-movies, like The Devil Wears Prada and The Nanny Diaries.

The story follows "Ivy Ames, an Upper East Side woman who, after losing her high-powered job and getting divorced, starts over again in a less ritzy downtown apartment." After all this, Ivy turns her attention to helping children. Aww! Oh, but wait - lest we get all Sally Struthers here, Ivy "starts a business to help upper-middle-class women get their children into elite kindergartens."
