Movie Preview: Death Defying Acts

Hmm. . . a movie with two relatively big-ish actors (Catherine Zeta-Jones is perhaps more recognizable, but Guy Pearce is an exceptional actor, as you may recall from a little something called Memento) that has been completed for many months but gets practically no U.S. promotion whatsoever, even as its release date (July 11) fast approaches? It kinda makes you wonder about this Harry Houdini drama, Death Defying Acts.

Little Women director Gillian Armstrong leads the dramatic tale of escapism and romance. The story takes place in 1926 Britain where Houdini "enters into a passionate affair with a Scottish psychic (Zeta-Jones). The psychic and her daughter (Saoirse Ronan) attempt to con Houdini during a highly publicized séance to contact his mother whose death has haunted him for many years. However, all does not go to plan."

The story has so much potential to be dark and intriguing, and I am always curious about what Guy Pearce is up to. Plus, there's a pre-Atonement (and thus pre-Oscar nom) Saoirse Ronan and she is a pretty great little actress.

The movie already had an Australian premiere and I will probably give it a shot when it comes to a theater near me. To check out the trailer, read more.

First Look: Atonement

I was just saying how super cute I think James McAvoy is and here we are with a new full-length trailer for his WW II period movie Atonement, based on the novel by Ian McEwan and also starring Keira Knightley. Another reason I'm intrigued by this movie: Saoirse Ronan, the young Irish actress who was recently cast to play Susie in Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lovely Bones plays a key role.

From what I can tell in the trailer, McAvoy's character Robbie and Knightley's character Cecilia are having an illicit love affair when Ronan's character Briony accuses Robbie of something and he's sent away. Irish Actress Cast to play Susie in The Lovely Bones

Well, it looks like someone in Hollywood agrees with all of you who commented in the casting news about Rachel Weisz and Ryan Gosling joining The Lovely Bones: the girl at the center of the story will not be played by a Fanning, nor is she a mainstream name - yet. Young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan will play the difficult role of Susie, a 14-year-old girl who is raped and killed, and who narrates the story from heaven. Weisz and Gosling will play Susie's parents in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the bestselling novel.

Variety continues:

Ronan, 13, has several movies awaiting release, including Death Defying Acts, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Guy Pearce, and I Could Never Be Your Woman, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd. This summer, she films The City of Ember.
