TV Tonight: Brothers and Sisters

Have you seen any of the promos for tonight's two-hour special episode of Brothers and Sisters? They're awfully intense, promising a birth, a death, and more than the average amount of Walker family drama.

In this episode - or, rather, these two episodes - Trish goes into labor with Kitty and Robert's baby. It's a big day for the couple, and not just for that reason: Robert's also planning on making public his decision to run for governor of California. Meanwhile, Rebecca continues to rekindle her relationship with her father, and she ends up discovering some more disturbing information that could destroy Ojai Foods and maybe even send a Walker to prison.

Apparently, this episode is a tearjerker and a surefire Emmy submission for Rob Lowe - but I don't want to say any more than that. Instead, I'll just be tuning in tonight to see what all goes down. What about you? To check out a promo for the episode, just read more.

First Look: Brothers and Sisters Season Three

Last Spring, we did some talking 'round here about the Justin and Rebecca situation on Brothers and Sisters, and it looks like those of us who were a little uneasy seeing the two of them together will have lots of chances to get used to it in the coming season. From the looks of things in this ABC promo, the two are definitely more than just ex-brother-and-sister when the show's third season premieres Sept. 28.

Of course, we know promos can be misleading, so take what you see in this one with a grain of salt. But in general, things appear to be mostly the same as ever for the Walker clan. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because for this huge and dysfunctional family, that means a lot of fights, awkward family dinners, occasional romantic interludes, and a whole lot of lies that always come out in the worst possible ways. "Certain members of this family are keeping all kinds of secrets," Calista Flockhart's Kitty exclaims in the promo - and I wouldn't want it any other way.

I'm excited for this soapy show to be a fun diversion on my viewing schedule again. What about you? To check out the promo, just read more.

TV Tonight: Brothers & Sisters

Brothers & Sisters hasn't been gone as long as some of the other shows that went off the air during the strike - we spoiled fans of the Walker family got to see an original episode in February, after all. But when the show went off the air, it seemed like a lot of big things were about to happen, so I'm frankly relieved that it's finally returning.

While I'm excited about many of the upcoming developments in the B&S universe, I'm a little worried about others - particularly the dynamic the writers have been setting up with Rebecca and Justin, though they recently assured E! that the resolution will be better than viewers imagine. (For some reason, I have shades of Shonda Rhimes promising Grey's Anatomy viewers that she wasn't following the rules of TV right before bringing Meredith back from the dead - once bitten, twice shy?)

On the other hand, I've been loving most of the other Walker siblings' stories - especially the ever-lovable Kevin and his dating issues. (There are plenty of juicy spoilers out there about where his story might be going, and while I won't mention them here, well, go here and scroll down.) Plus, watching matriarch Nora Walker wade into romance again has been a great argument for showcasing interesting, complex middle-aged characters in primetime. That sounds like it will continue tonight, as Nora reacts to a life-altering offer from Isaac.

TV Tonight: Brothers & Sisters

Is it just me, or have there been a lot of weddings on TV this fall? Wilhelmina on Ugly Betty, Karen on Dirty Sexy Money, and, soon, Robert and Kitty on Brothers & Sisters.

The planning for that last one is in full swing on tonight's episode, with Kitty and Robert trying to figure out the songs - and the steps - for their first dance. The wedding itself is supposed to happen in next week's episode, but when you're dealing with a presidential candidate and the Walker family, aren't things bound to get messed up? Does Sally Field's Emmy Make You More Interested in "Brothers and Sisters"?

One of TV's great dysfunctional families returns to TV tonight when the second season of "Brothers & Sisters" premieres on ABC. Sally Field recently won the Emmy for best actress in a drama series, so I'm wondering: Does her win make you more likely to tune in tonight?

Sally Field, Liam Neeson Set for Spielberg-Helmed Lincoln Biopic

In a recent article, Newsweek randomly announced that Sally Field will play Mary Todd Lincoln and Liam Neeson will play Abraham Lincoln in a biopic directed by Steven Spielberg. The casting news was included in a piece about the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum’s special exhibit, “Mary Todd Lincoln: First Lady of Controversy,” which explores the possibility that Mary Todd Lincoln may have suffered from mental illness.

Newsweek states that Spielberg's project will be based on the Doris Kearns Goodwin book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Of course, production will have to wait until filming wraps on the fourth Indiana Jones movie, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Personally, I'm excited for this. I don't think Field has had a complex, meaty film role in many years, and I look forward to seeing her on the big screen again, even if she doesn't think she has time for anything but "Brothers & Sisters."

What Was the Biggest Surprise of the Emmys?

What a night! There were some expected wins, like America Ferrera winning for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy and "The Sopranos" taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. But then there were some major surprises, too. I found these things to be most startling wins of the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards:

James Spader - Seriously?! I'm slightly surprised Spader beat out Hugh Laurie, but most of all, how is it possible he beat out James Gandolfini in the final season of "The Sopranos"?

Jaime Pressly - I had the toughest time figuring out who might win in this category because, between Elizabeth Perkins, Vanessa Williams and Jenna Fischer the talent was so tremendous. I just didn't think Pressly would take this one.

Sally Field - Again, the competition in Field's category was very strong (Edie Falco and Kyra Sedgwick?), and this was Field's first season on a new show, so I never truly expected her to take the award.

Ricky Gervais - Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for Gervais because I think he's a genius, but I didn't realize the voters would really choose him, considering some of the mainstream hits that Gervais was up against (Sheen of "Two and a Half Men" and the previous voters' favorite Tony Shalhoub).

"30 Rock" - Wow, did I not see this coming at all! This scrappy young NBC series took a little while to find its footing, and up against other beloved series like "Entourage" and even "Ugly Betty," I figured it wouldn't be the voters' favorite.

Emmy Breakdown: Lead Actress in a Drama Series

In the weeks leading up to the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards, I'll be looking at the nominees in some major categories and trying to predict who's most likely to win in these Emmy Breakdowns. Up today: Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Patricia Arquette ("Medium") - "Medium" isn't a show I regularly watch (er, I even suggested it should be stopped), but I do know that Arquette is a strong actress who really carries her show. She won in 2005 against a tough crowd that included Glenn Close, and she's certainly a threat in this strong category. But I think she'll be overshadowed by others this time around. Chance of winning: Moderate

Minnie Driver ("The Riches") - I'm thrilled to see this show get some recognition, and I thought Driver really grew into her character over the course of the first season. But the episode she submitted for Emmy consideration was the show's premiere - which I thought was some of her weaker work - and I think that will hurt her against such a tough field. She deserves to be here, but I doubt it's her time to win.Chance of winning: Low

Edie Falco ("The Sopranos") - Falco is the most decorated actress in this category (unless you count Sally Field's Oscars), and she's coming off the final season of a show that won her three Emmys and boatloads of acclaim. I don't think she's a slam dunk, necessarily, but if the voters are in the mood to reward "The Sopranos" one last time, this Emmy could be hers. Chance of winning: High

Sally Field ("Brothers & Sisters") - As I said while breaking down the supporting actress category, "Brothers & Sisters" is such a strong ensemble that it's hard to break out a single performance and reward it as outstanding. But if there's one exception to that, it's Field. As the Walker matriarch, she's at the heart of everything that happens on the show, and while Field occasionally veers too far into campiness and melodrama for my tastes, her performance is almost always moving. Chance of winning: Moderate to high

Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: SVU") - Those of you who watch "SVU" regularly assure me that Hargitay really is good enough to deserve her annual nomination, and I believe you. She's the defending champion in this category, and she beat out a tough field that included Allison Janney and Frances Conroy. But I still don't think last year's group of nominees was as strong as this year's, and it's going to be tough for her to repeat - though I fully expect she'll be back among the contenders next year. Chance of winning: Moderate.

Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer") - Sedgwick has some momentum here, having won the Golden Globe earlier this year. I know her performance is divisive; some see her as too shrieky and affected, while others think her work is brilliant (most of the time, I fall into the latter camp). But she's truly at the center of her show (much like Arquette on "Medium"), and she's carried it for several strong seasons now. It's just a gut feeling, but I think this could be her breakthrough year. Chance of winning: High

TV Tonight: "Brothers & Sisters"

I haven't written much about "Brothers & Sisters," but over the course of its first season, it's become a show I can't wait to watch every Sunday. The show has only gotten stronger over the past few episodes, with the introduction of Emily VanCamp (formerly of "Everwood") as the Walker family's previously unknown half-sibling. Sally Field is delightfully inappropriate as matriarch Nora, and I'm amazed at the show's ability to juggle a number of plot lines (at least one per member of the Walker clan) without getting too overwhelming.

I'm especially intrigued by tonight's episode because of the cliffhanger set up a couple of weeks ago: Rebecca claimed that her half-sister Sarah's husband, Joe, kissed her during a guitar lesson. The kiss wasn't shown on TV, and I'm not sure if Rebecca's story is true; regardless, it's certain to put even more stress on Joe and Sarah's already screwed-up marriage. But "Brothers & Sisters" always throws a lot of lighter moments in among the heavy stuff, and this episode should be no exception: To see a cute scene of Calista Flockhart's character, Kitty, giving her boyfriend/boss a massage, read more
