Javier Bardem Makes Me Interested to See Eat, Pray, Love

I'll admit I wasn't totally on board for the film adaptation of Eat, Pray, Love when it was announced that Julia Roberts would play the lead role, memoir writer Elizabeth Gilbert. I like Roberts, but this seemed like some odd casting. Gradually, however, I've been warming to the project, as director Ryan Murphy (creator of Popular and Nip/Tuck, director of Running With Scissors) signed on, and Richard Jenkins was cast. Now that Javier Bardem is in talks to join the project, I'm full-on interested.

Bardem would play "Felipe, the man Gilbert meets and falls in love with on the final leg of a journey of self-discovery that began with the end of her marriage." In my opinion, Javier Bardem is sex on legs. I will watch pretty much anything he's in, and I look forward to seeing how he and Roberts play off one another. What do you think?

An Even More Gleeful New Promo for Glee

It's no secret how much I loved the first episode of Fox's Glee, which will air as a special preview of the series May 19 after American Idol. The show, from very busy guy Ryan Murphy, is sort of like how I imagine Freaks and Geeks would have been if it were set in the present day and had production numbers.

So I'm thrilled to be touring the set today! I'll be hanging out with the cast and crew for a few hours in LA, so if you have any questions about this show, leave them in the comments. I hope I get to see how one of these big song-and-dance routines comes together on camera.

In the meantime, though, Fox has just released a new promo for the show, which has even more great scenes of the ragtag glee club and its overly optimistic leader. Not gonna lie: Every time "Don't Stop Believing" starts up, things get a little emotional over here. I just hope the second episode, which will air in the Fall, can live up to the promise of this first one. To check out the new extended preview, just read more.

Nip/Tuck Creator Takes Hypochondria Comedy to NBC

Can hypochondria be funny? NBC and Nip/Tuck's Ryan Murphy think so. The network has just picked up Murphy's Hyper-chondriac (he sure does love his titles with punctuation!), a half-hour comedy about a pharmaceutical salesman who develops hypochondria in the course of doing his job.

The series is based on the book Hyper-chondriac: One Man's Quest to Hurry Up and Calm Down, a memoir that tracks author Brian Frazer's history with various maladies that all ended up being tied to stress. In Murphy's version, the main character (also named Brian) is a sales rep whose work takes him to various hospitals, where he becomes convinced he's suffering from a whole host of diseases. As in the book, the symptoms are real, but the causes are different.

The pilot is expected to shoot next year. Murphy is already working on Glee, a Fox pilot about glee clubs, plus the remaining seasons of Nip/Tuck.

Between this pilot and a couple of memoirs on bookshelves (both Frazer's and Jennifer Traig's Well Enough Alone), it seems like hypochondria is a hot topic right now. Could you see yourself watching a comedy about it? (And would it just make you think you had some horrible diseases, too?)

Nip/Tuck Creator's Latest Project Stalls Out

It's been nearly a year since we heard the first buzz about Nip/Tuck co-creator Ryan Murphy's latest project. It was supposed to be a drama for FX about a man who realizes he's a transsexual, with Brad Pitt among its producers.

FX's president reportedly bought the pitch for the show immediately upon hearing it, and Murphy had plans for at least four seasons, with the first focusing on his main character's realization, the second on his transition to being a woman, and so forth. The cast was strong - Joseph Fiennes in the lead role, Carrie-Ann Moss as his wife - and the show seemed like just the sort of edgy fare FX has become known for.

But somehow, the show - which was named Pretty/Handsome (Murphy sure does like his slashes in titles, no?) - has stalled. Though the pilot was produced, FX passed on the show this Spring, and nobody else seems to want it.

Without seeing the whole pilot, it's impossible to know why exactly the show didn't make it. But it's interesting to think about - especially after watching some preview clips (which you can check out after the jump). I would love to see a show really challenge our perceptions of gender. Could this have been the one to do it? Or did it just not hit the mark?
