Casting Update: Who's in For Man of Steel

The principal cast of Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's new Superman movie, is getting more exciting by the week. We've known for months that The Tudors star Henry Cavill had nabbed the lead role, with Amy Adams beating out tons of other actresses to play his leading lady, but the rest of the characters are still being cast. With all the rumors running rampant, it can be hard to keep track of who's playing who, so here's a rundown on which actors will bring the beloved comic to the big screen in the newest reboot.

British import Henry Cavill will play Clark Kent/Superman. Born Kal-El from the planet Krypton, Superman is an alien who battles evil when he's not disguised as his alter ego, Clark Kent. Clark works as a reporter for The Daily Planet.
Amy Adams will play Lois Lane, Clark's love interest and fellow reporter at The Daily Planet.
Russell Crowe is in talks to star as Jor-El, Superman's birth father.
Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent, Superman's adoptive father.
Diane Lane is Martha Kent, Superman's adoptive mom and Jonathan's wife.
Michael Shannon will square off against Superman as the villainous General Zod, the head of the Krypton military.
German actress Antje Traue has been cast as female villain Faora.
Julia Ormond is attached to play Lara, Superman's birth mother.
Laurence Fishburne will play Perry White, Clark Kent's editor at The Daily Planet.

Circumcision Increasingly Up For Debate

These days it seems like circumcision is the new abortion, at least if you compare the heated rhetoric surrounding the debate. Russell Crowe angered some fans after he took to his Twitter feed this week to call circumcision "barbaric and stupid." While Eli Roth, the Jewish director of Russell's new film, says it was just a joking exchange between friends, the reaction to the tweets offers more evidence that circumcision is a hot button issue.

Russell tweeted: "Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that GOD requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect." He also wrote to Eli Roth, "I love my Jewish friends, I love the apples and the honey and the funny little hats but stop cutting yr babies @eliroth." He has since apologized for any distress he caused and said he was very sorry if his tweets were seen as "mocking the rituals and traditions of others." And Eli Roth has subsequently said that he and Russell were just teasing each other.

Joke or not, the Oscar winner isn't the only one to use harsh language against the practice. In San Francisco, one anticircumcision advocate has successfully put a measure on the ballot that would ban the practice, which he calls "genital mutilation," within the city limits. Anyone who violates the law would face a $1,000 fine and up to one year in jail.

Parents have to weigh various factors when deciding whether to go forward with circumcision, and in fact, the rate has dropped in the US to only 32 percent of baby boys. But as one San Francisco rabbi says, taking away that choice from parents "threatens a liberal society; it's so dictatorial; it's so over the top." Do you agree?

The Next Three Days: An Escape Plan Gone Too Far

In The Next Three Days, Russell Crowe's character, a professor at a local community college, discusses the use of logic in Don Quixote with his students. Is lack of logic actually better than logic itself? The film sure thinks so, as it weaves together an intricate plot that sinks deeper and deeper into the absurd as it drags on. There's entertainment value along the way, but the more implausible the story gets, the more it loses its audience.

Based on a French thriller, the film follows John Brennan (Crowe), the perfect husband to his wife Lara (Elizabeth Banks), and father to their little boy. John and Lara are the ideal couple, so in love with each other that they still find time to sneak in sex in the car after dinner dates. Then one morning, the police rush into their house to arrest Lara for murder, and their happy life comes crashing down. For more on the film,

read more. Lara has been charged for the murder of her boss after the two women had had a public scuffle at the office. When the boss lady turns up dead in the employee parking lot (and Lara is seen driving away), things appear fairly incriminating. But despite the evidence, John refuses to believe that his wife is guilty. He tries to get her out of jail the legal way, and when that doesn't work, he plots her escape with a few tips from an ex-convict (Liam Neeson). When the story first begins, John doesn't even know how to load a gun. But as his plotting gets more elaborate, he's nearly driven insane by the dream of his wife's freedom. He abandons rational thought to do whatever it takes, even if it means having blood on his hands. Yes, people will go to great lengths for love, but when the audience isn't even sure of Lara's innocence, it doesn't make John look noble - it makes him look crazy. Crowe and Banks both give it their all here, bringing more genuine emotion to the story than it perhaps deserves. The film does have a nice helping of suspense (no doubt thanks to director Paul Haggis), and like John, you're bound to get a little caught up in the madness of the escape. But be warned: you'll have to abandon your sense of logic at the door. John pulls off his scheme with such a degree of expertise that you'll wonder when the ordinary suburban husband started resembling Jason Bourne. What's worse, John's questionable tactics make it harder to root for him. As he and Lara inch closer to their happily ever after on the lam, I wasn't cheering them on anymore. Rather, I was questioning if I still cared.

You don't exactly expect the Feds to bust in on your idyllic family breakfast to arrest your wife for murder, but that's exactly what happens to Russell Crowe in The Next Three Days, a thriller from Crash director Paul Haggis. Elizabeth Banks plays his presumed-innocent wife, Laura, in this remake of French film Pour Elle.

When Crowe's character can't use the legal system to get Laura out of prison, he goes rogue to break her out, employing an ex-con who's done it before (Liam Neeson) to help him. Crowe and Banks make an interesting married couple, and the intense, action-driven drama is definitely Crowe's forte, so my interest is piqued. The annual amfAR charity auction was a star-studded affair in Cannes last night, and afterward a handful of big names headed to the Artists for Peace and Justice bash at the VIP Room. Paris Hilton traded her white Jean Farris gown for something green to show off the sexy dance moves Adrien Brody is such a fan of, while Elizabeth Banks partied with Gerard Butler as her season finale of 30 Rock aired back in the US. The annual amfAR benefit brought out well-dressed celebs like Michelle Williams, Jennifer Lopez, and James Franco to pose on the red carpet, and the star-studded fun continued inside. J Lo took the stage in her pink Cavalli creation to entertain the crowd with Marc Anthony by her side, with Michelle Williams later stepping in front of the microphone and showing off her short dress. Ryan Gosling was the main attraction, though, as he auctioned off a kiss to a lucky lady, who was dressed as a man.

Kate Beckinsale wore Armani and a sweeping updo as she addressed the audience, along with Marion Cotillard and Benicio Del Toro. Emily Blunt, whose fiance, John Krasinski, is back in NY working on Something Borrowed, instead cuddled up to irresistible Ryan. The event's organizer Sharon Stone wasn't able to attend and instead delivered a video message, but her absence didn't get in the way of the night being a success and raising $6.7 million for AIDS charities.
