The Stooges, Metallica in the Running for Rock Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced this year's class of nominees, and there are some big names on the list. The Hall of Fame is following up last year's class, which featured the likes of Madonna, Leonard Cohen, and John Mellencamp, with a group of nominees including Metallica, Run-DMC, and the Stooges.

In total, nine acts made the short list. In addition to the names above, guitarist Jeff Beck, singer Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, War, Chic, and Bobby Womack will be on the ballot. The five acts with the most votes will be named to the Hall of Fame in January and officially inducted in April.

A couple of interesting things: First, neither Stevie Ray Vaughan nor Bon Jovi made the ballot this year, which would have been the first year both were eligible (at least 25 years must have passed since the act released its first single). And second, no Beastie Boys? They were short-listed last year, but they were left off this time around.

It's official: Hollywood writers approved their new contract with almost 94 percent of WGA members voting in favor of the agreement, the Associated Press reports.
Miss/Guided, the ABC comedy starring Judy Greer, will premiere in March, Zap2it reports.
The next Terminator movie, starring Christian Bale, will open Memorial Day weekend of 2009, Variety reports.
Billboard writes that Justin Timberlake, Lou Reed and Billy Joel are among the people who will induct members of the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class next month in New York.
The New York Times reports that several networks are ready to claim Jay Leno once he's done with The Tonight Show next year.
The Martin Scorsese film Shutter Island, starring Leonardo Dicaprio, just added Emily Mortimer, Jackie Earle Haley and Max von Sydow to the cast, according to ComingSoon.

Madonna to Join Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Beastie Boys Denied

It's not really surprising that Madonna will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this March. Back in September, the eligible nominees for the 2008 induction included Madonna, the Beastie Boys, John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Ventures, Donna Summer and the Dave Clark Five. As of today, five of these nine have been selected for the actual induction. And the new members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are...

So... no Beastie Boys? Shocking! That decision puzzles me, though this is just the first year that the Boys are eligible to be inducted, so there's always 2009! What do you think of this year's inductees? Were the Beastie Boys shafted? What about Donna Summer, for that matter? Discuss.

Madonna, Beasties Nominated for Rock Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is wasting no time in recognizing Madonna and the Beastie Boys. They're among the nine artists nominated for the new class of inductees in just their first year of eligibility for the honor.

They join seven other nominees from all across the musical map: John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Ventures, Donna Summer and the Dave Clark Five. Cohen, Bambaataa, Summer and the Ventures are also first-time nominees. Five of them will be chosen to be inducted into the hall in March.

To be eligible, artists must have released their first singles no later than 1982. Madonna first hit the scene that year with "Everybody," while the Beasties released their first EP, Pollywog Stew.

It makes sense that both Madonna and the Beasties would end up in the hall eventually, but I think it's great to see them recognized so soon. If I were a voter, those two would definitely make my final five. Of the nine nominees, which five would you want to get in?

Monday night seems like a strange time to celebrate rock and roll, but there was plenty of awesomeness at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's annual induction ceremony, held last night at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. For the first time ever, the awards were broadcast live on TV, but if you missed the show on VH1 Classic, you can watch it on demand at AOL Music.

Jay-Z was on hand to induct hip-hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, which he did by reading a speech off of his PDA. Other inductees included legendary girl group the Ronettes, inducted by Keith Richards; Patti Smith, who accepted the honor from Zack De La Rocha; and R.E.M., who received their award from Eddie Vedder.

Unfortunately, Eddie Van Halen couldn't make it because he's in rehab, but the group bearing his moniker was still officially inducted by Velvet Revolver. Two former band members, Sammy Hagar and ex-bassist Michael Anthony, were there to accept the award.
