The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced this year's class of nominees, and there are some big names on the list. The Hall of Fame is following up last year's class, which featured the likes of Madonna, Leonard Cohen, and John Mellencamp, with a group of nominees including Metallica, Run-DMC, and the Stooges.
In total, nine acts made the short list.

It's not really surprising that Madonna will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this March. Back in September, the eligible nominees for the 2008 induction included Madonna, the Beastie Boys, John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Ventures, Donna Summer and the Dave Clark Five. As of today, five of these nine have been selected for the actual induction.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is wasting no time in recognizing Madonna and the Beastie Boys. They're among the nine artists nominated for the new class of inductees in just their first year of eligibility for the honor.
They join seven other nominees from all across the musical map: John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Ventures, Donna Summer and the Dave Clark Five.

Monday night seems like a strange time to celebrate rock and roll, but there was plenty of awesomeness at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's annual induction ceremony, held last night at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. For the first time ever, the awards were broadcast live on TV, but if you missed the show on VH1 Classic, you can watch it on demand at AOL Music.
Jay-Z was on hand to induct hip-hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, which he did by reading a speech off of his PDA.
