Red Lights Trailer: Cillian Murphy Takes on Robert De Niro's Creepy Supernatural Powers

Handsome Inception star Cillian Murphy may be taking on a less sinister role in Red Lights, but the trailer for the film looks like an equally otherworldly experience. The film premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and we didn't just take notice because it was also picked up by a distributor - it's also the second effort from Rodrigo Cortés, the director of the chilling Ryan Reynolds flick Buried. In Red Lights, physicist Tom Buckley (Murphy) is assisting Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver), a psychologist who investigates the supernatural and the people who claim they can channel it. After the world-renowned (and not to mention seriously creepy) psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) steps back into the limelight after several years, Tom wants to investigate him.

As Tom attempts to uncover the truth about Silver's gift, he goes down a crazy, creepy sinkhole of the paranormal and his own paranoia. From De Niro's frightening mystical powers to Tom's unraveling, this movie looks crazily intense. Limitless: Doesn't Reach Its Full Potential

The exciting premise of Limitless opens the door for a plethora of possible film storylines: a man discovers a wonder drug called NZT that allows him to access 100 percent of his brain. He not only becomes an upgraded version of himself, he transforms into the best version of virtually any human. Will he use his power for good? For evil? For love? Director Neil Burger tries to encapsulate all of those themes (and more) into his film, creating an adventure that's entertaining but never quite crosses over into exhilarating.

Bradley Cooper stars as Eddie Morra, a struggling writer whose life is in the toilet. He looks like hell, his apartment is a dump, and his girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) just broke up with him. He's skeptical when his former brother-in-law slips him a drug to help him focus on his book, but Eddie quickly changes his mind when he asks himself "how much worse could it get?"

Thus begins a dizzying adventure where NZT becomes Eddie's own personal magic lamp, granting him all the wishes he could possibly ask for. Naturally, it's not all fun and games; he's thrown into a circle of violence and slippery people almost immediately after NZT becomes part of his life. The more Eddie shows off his newly acquired skills, business savvy, and opulence, the bigger the target on his back becomes.

To find out why Bradley Cooper shines, just

Limitless is by all means a thriller, but it's also part escapist film. In the midst of watching Eddie skyrocket to the top, part of the fun is imagining what it would be like if a drug like NZT really did exist. Burger plays up this aspect every chance he gets, trying to take the audience on a similar roller coaster ride to the one that Eddie is experiencing. As Eddie writes his novel in hours, words cascade down the screen; when he starts to experience withdrawal, the camera shifts and turns upside down.The visual effects get a bit nauseating, but it's also clear that both Cooper and Burger are having fun, and that the film doesn't take itself too seriously. We even get some comic relief courtesy of Eddie's self-deprecating personality.

In his first role as leading man, Cooper successfully proves that he has what it takes to carry a film on his own. He's backed up by a solid supporting cast in Cornish and Robert DeNiro, but Cooper is Limitless. He brings just the right amount of fear, confidence, and wit to Eddie, and manages to keep the smarmy behavior of "enhanced Eddie" reigned in just enough to keep the audience on his side (those piercing baby blues don't hurt either).

The problem is that there are so many different roads Eddie's story can take, but the film never commits to just one. His new life becomes so bogged down in danger and problems, and the various issues begin to compete for screen time. Eddie's relationship with Lindy is the heart of the film, as she's the only person in his life who knows him for who he actually is, but their scenes together are virtually missing from the film's final act. Between Eddie's dependency on the drug, the realization of the side effects, and issues with his newfound business deals, there are just too many loose ends left to tie up.

Like NZT itself, Limitless is alluring, thought-provoking, and dizzying. But with a tighter script and added intensity, it could have been a more heart-pounding ride.

Righteous Kill: Mostly Just Killing Time

You know, it's nice to see Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro up on the big screen together. It's sort of sweet to see the two enjoy some banter back and forth, two grumpy older men who happen to be film legends. But is it worth sitting through the mediocre, thrill-less thriller that is Righteous Kill? I'm not so sure.

Much of the movie feels incredibly familiar, and my guess is it wouldn't have gotten any attention if it weren't for the promise of "DeNiro and Pacino reuniting on the big screen!!" The script - and, frankly, the performances - are lacking so much, these two huge legendary names in the credits can't save it. For more of my thoughts on this,

DeNiro plays Turk and Pacino plays Rooster, two highly respected NYPD detectives put on the case of a serial killer who's been targeting acquitted criminals. Murderers, rapists, pimps - the scum of the earth types who were let off for whatever reason become the victims of this "righteous" killer. Thing is, Turk and Rooster know each of these victims, and Turk has been known to have a short fuse when it comes to the injustice of letting a dangerous perp go free. So, all eyes start turning toward him as a suspect in the serial killer case, and as he continues to hunt for the killer, some of his colleagues (played by John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg) try to find proof that Turk's the one behind it all. Another member of the NYPD homicide department, Karen Kleisner (Carla Gugino who is one of the highlights of the film), is sort of Turk's kinky paramour, but even she begins to suspect him.

I enjoyed watching DeNiro in this role because for his part, he genuinely seems to be thinking about the role and the words he's saying, etc. But there's something about Pacino's performance that gives me the sense he's not all there, and it's frustrating to watch. The phrase "phoning it in" comes to mind. I think Pacino has it in him to be spectacular, but in this case, it's like he doesn't care enough to put in much effort. As a crime drama/thriller, there is some mystery and tension, but it reaches this low level of suspense and never quite ups the ante. I was never fully gripped by the story, just sort of mildly curious to find out what the deal was. And then, during the dramatic ending, I started checking my watch to see how much time we had left and I could have sworn the two main actors were doing the same thing.

Movie Preview: What Just Happened?

What Just Happened? was a fairly big deal at this year's Sundance mostly because of Robert De Niro who is at the center of this strange comedy. It's a Hollywood satire that some people will probably appreciate more than others, and the reviews I've read of the film have said there may be too many "insider" jokes about "the industry" for most people, but that otherwise it's a great movie.

The story follows "two weeks in the life of a fading Hollywood producer (De Niro) who's having a rough time trying to get his new picture made." Sean Penn plays himself, as does Bruce Willis (pretty hilariously, it seems) and Twilight's Bella, Kristen Stewart, also stars in the film, which opens October 3.

Would You Want to See Sequels to The Good Shepherd?

The 2006 CIA historical thriller The Good Shepherd didn't totally wow the critics and I've heard many viewers complain that the movie is too long and not all that interesting. Even so, the Robert DeNiro-directed project did earn an Oscar nod and it boasts a stellar cast.

Now DeNiro is talking sequels - yes, plural. Variety continues:

De Niro said he would like to make two sequels to CIA Cold War drama The Good Shepherd - one bringing the action forward from 1961 to 1989, the other following its hero, Edward Wilson (Matt Damon), up to the present day.

Martin Scorsese will be a producer on the sequels as well.

First Look: Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino in Righteous Kill

Awesomely, a teaser trailer has arrived for the highly anticipated crime thriller Righteous Kill, which has brought together Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino for the first time since they starred together in Heat (1995). Both men look grizzled and tired, which works quite well for the weathered old cops they're portraying. The two are veteran NYC policemen trying to hunt down a serial killer who targets recently acquitted criminals. Though it's just a teaser trailer, it's still totally exciting to see these two powerhouses onscreen together. Righteous Kill is scheduled to open September 12. To check out the teaser,
