CBS Scores Another Daily Show Alum: Rob Riggle

CBS's comedy department is starting to look a little like The Daily Show, Primetime Edition. Current Daily Show correspondent Rob Riggle has just signed a deal to create and star in a half-hour CBS comedy, following a similar deal by Samantha Bee and Jason Jones last week.

Riggle is committed to The Daily Show through the end of the year, but after that, he'll make the jump to CBS to start working on his show. He's still kicking around ideas for the series, but one thought is that it could draw on his experiences as an officer in the Marine Corps Reserves, as Riggle's done before on the Daily Show.

I'm so glad to see that this wave of Daily Show correspondents will be branching out into new, cool-sounding projects, just like Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Rob Corddry, and Ed Helms did a few years ago. And hey, it looks like there will be some openings over at The Daily Show for 2009, so here's hoping the new correspondents they track down are just as funny as the ones who came before.

"Daily Show" Correspondent Keeps It Real in Iraq

When "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" correspondent Rob Riggle reports on the Iraq war tonight, the segment will be a little different from Riggle's typical dispatches on "Mess O'Potamia." This time, Riggle will actually be reporting from Iraq.

Riggle, who was a major in the U.S. Marine Corps before becoming one of the "Daily Show"'s funny guys, recently spent five days with troops in Iraq as part of a USO comedy tour. While there, he and a "Daily Show" writer and producer gathered video footage to use on the show this week - the first time the show has reported from Iraq.

War is, obviously, a serious matter, so where's the funny part? Mostly, the reports will be making fun of Riggle and his adventures while overseas. "Of course what's going on is serious, and we take it very seriously," Riggle told the Hollywood Reporter. "Any humor we did, it's on me being an idiot. We know where the line is."

With embedded reporters and interviews with presidential candidates, the fake-news show is starting to look more and more like a real news outlet. I'm curious to see what Riggle has to say about Iraq now that he's seen the war up close.

21 Jump Street Trailer: Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum Go Undercover

The '80s series 21 Jump Street may have been a crime drama, but the big-screen version is most definitely a comedy - and a buddy comedy at that. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play a pair of former high school rivals who become best buds during their police training. Life in the force isn't as badass as they were expecting, though - until they get called in to revive "an undercover police program from the '80s," in a very obvious nod to the original series. The guys are pulled back into the throes of high school, with a mission to bring down the dealers of the hottest new drug in town.

Hill is as hilarious as ever, and Tatum seems to be his perfect comedic foil - their background as the former high school bully and nerd is a nice touch. The film is also peppered with some of my favorite funny people, like Parks and Recreation's Nick Offerman, Rob Riggle, and Ellie Kemper from The Office. The film hits theaters next March, but watch the guys party with the best of 'em when you
