Penelope Cruz Heads Home to Madrid With Her Pirates

Vogue cover girl Penelope Cruz changed up her promotional outfits today by wearing a one-piece, instead of a long dress, to the Madrid photo call for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides held at the city's Villamagna Hotel. She's in her native Spain after a whirlwind promotional schedule that kicked off over a week ago in LA, where she and costar Johnny Depp debuted the movie with a huge todo at Disneyland. Penelope and Johnny were then off to Moscow, London, and, finally, Cannes for a star-studded screening during the film festival. Despite our hopes, neither Johnny nor Penelope have hit the red carpet with their respective significant others Vanessa Paradis and Javier Bardem. In fact, Johnny seems to be sitting out the last leg of the promotional endeavors. Penelope was solo for yesterday's event in Munich, and this morning she had only costars Sam Claflin and Astrid-Berges Frisbey as well as producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Penelope has one more Pirates premiere this evening in her home city, and she's sure to keep the fab press tour fashion coming.

Johnny Depp to Remake The Thin Man

From a pirate to a P.I.: Johnny Depp is set to star in a remake of The Thin Man with his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall on board as well. The film is a reboot of the 1934 Oscar-nominated original and an adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's book.

The story follows detective Nick Charles as he solves a mystery alongside his wife, Nora. Depp will play Nick, and since there's no news yet on who will play Nora, let me know who you'd like to see as Depp's next leading lady in the comments.

Penelope and Marion Have Just a Few More Nine Premieres

Two of the ladies of Nine, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard, were in Paris last night for a premiere with costar Daniel Day-Lewis and director Rob Marshall. The film opens there in early March, though it debuted in the US last December just in time to make the 2010 Oscar nominations - the plan turned out well for Penelope, who's up for an award in the Best Supporting Actress category. Nine: The Tinsel on Your Tree of Christmas Movies

It's impossible for Nine not to be compared to Chicago. Both are film adaptations of Broadway musicals, both boast all-star casts and both are directed by Rob Marshall. Even further, both casts are primarily made up of gorgeous women revolving around a leading man. Nine has plenty of glitz, glamour, and fun to make for a solid two hours of entertainment, but unfortunately it may be remembered as the film that's like Chicago, but not as good.

The film is actually based on a musical that's based on an Italian play that's based on director Federico Fellini's movie 8 1/2. Got all that? In Nine, Daniel Day-Lewis works his Italian accent as Guido Contini (based on Fellini), a famous director who's struggling to find inspiration for his much-anticipated ninth film. Pushing 50, Contini finds himself in the midst of a mid-life crisis and seeks escape from the adoring public and paparazzi that are everywhere he turns (not to mention his own cast and crew that are waiting on a script). Here begins Contini's self-reflection through the many women that have influenced him over the years: from his deceased mother (Sophia Loren) to his sexy mistress (Penelope Cruz) to his neglected wife (Marion Cotillard).

Like Italy itself, Nine has style, glamour, and passion bursting at every seam. From the costumes to the lighting to performances, there's plenty of the razzle dazzle that we all expect from a musical. The performances aren't half-bad either; it's refreshing to finally see Kate Hudson out of romantic comedy mode (and singing, no less), but Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard truly steal the show as the two principal women in Contini's life. Their characters are polar opposites - Cruz's Carla is fiery and dramatic while Cotillard's Luisa is quiet yet fierce - but it's impossible to take your eyes of either of the gorgeous and talented actresses.

I'm a bit more conflicted about Daniel Day-Lewis's performance. The actor blows my mind with his chameleon-like abilities (I was constantly asking myself if this was really the same guy who screamed "I drink your milkshake" just last year), but was he really the right choice to play Contini? Day-Lewis is fun to watch and charming for sure, but I couldn't help but wonder if the role would have been even sexier and spicier with original choice Javier Bardem as the lead.

As for the musical numbers, each one is wonderful and impressive in its own right. The majority of the numbers are solos as Guido and his entourage of women take the stage one at a time to tell their own part of the story, but that doesn't mean the ladies can't bring down the house all on their own. Particularly memorable are Fergie's tour de force "Be Italian" and Kate Hudson's over-the-top, music video-like "Cinema Italiano." When the ladies perform the sets are designed to look like the Broadway stage and I found myself on the verge of clapping after many of them. The problem is that the musical numbers don't totally gel with the rest of the plot; each time a song comes on we are taken out of the present-time plot to spotlight one of Contini's women, and I would have liked to see a more seamless transition.

The secret to watching Nine is to just sit back and enjoy the ride. There's plenty of sexy songs, watchable actors, and funny moments to make for a flashy, fun film.

Kate Hudson Joins the Amazing Cast of Nine

Not only has Kate Hudson been added to the already-magnificent cast of Nine, a film adaptation of the award-winning musical, but the role and a song were added to the movie specifically for her.

The musical, inspired by Fellini's 8 1/2, is said to be "sultry and enchanting," and the same could be said about most of the cast members. Daniel Day-Lewis plays "world famous film director Guido Contini as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life."

The women playing Contini's women? They include Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Penélope Cruz, and now Kate Hudson.

Of his new cast addition, director Rob Marshall (Chicago) remarked, "It's wonderful having Kate join this extraordinary cast! Her revelatory skills as a singer and a dancer lead to the creation of the role of 'Stephanie,' a fashion reporter from Vogue working in Italy. An exciting new song, written by our composer Maury Yeston, has been added for her as well."

The Cast of Nine Might Trade One Oscar Winner for Another

It's possible that any we slice it, the cast of the movie musical Nine will be getting a heavy-hitting, Oscar-winning actor for the role of Guido Contini. Originally the part was going to be played by sexy Javier Bardem, but he recently dropped out due to exhaustion.

Now Daniel Day-Lewis is eying the role of Guido who is described as "a famous film director who experiences personal and creative crisis while trying to balance all the women in his life."

Rob Marshall (director of Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha) is directing the film, an adaptation of the stage musical which was an adaptation of the Fellini film 8 1/2.

The incredible women rounding out the rest of the cast include Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench.

We can see Javier in the upcoming Woody Allen movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and I've been itching to see what Daniel Day-Lewis will do next. His movie projects always seem like carefully weighed decisions so we know it's got to be something special if he does end up putting his seal of approval on this one.

Of course, a spokesperson for the Weinstein Co. is saying to Variety that any casting rumors at this point are "pure conjecture" but still, how great would this be?

Emma Hangs With Andrew While She's Considering a Fairy-Tale Role

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield held hands on a stroll through NYC today. They've been spotted all over the Big Apple in recent weeks while Andrew is performing in Broadway's Death of a Salesman. It's rumored Emma could be considering a new theatrical role as well. According to reports, Emma is being considered for Into the Woods. The big-screen adaptation of the classic musical already has Rob Marshall attached as director. The project would have to fit into Emma's busy schedule. She's scheduled to promote The Amazing Spider-Man prior to its July 3 release and in the Fall she'll team up with Ryan Gosling before their Gangster Squad hits the big screen in October.
