Rescue Me Debuts Its Minisodes

Thanks (or no thanks) to the writers' strike, FX's Rescue Me won't be back on the air for its fifth season till Spring 2009. But Denis Leary and company weren't about to make fans go that long without at least a little taste of New York firefighter life.

On Tuesday, FX premiered the first of 10 Rescue Me "minisodes," bite-sized bits of the show (all approximately five minutes long) that are meant to tide fans over till next year. Each minisode will premiere at 10 p.m. on Tuesday for the next nine weeks; 10 minutes later, they'll show up on Crackle, and by the next day they'll spread through various other online video sites.

The first minisode, "Fast," finds Sean Garrity struggling to maintain his cleansing fast in the face of Lou's doughnuts. If you're a fan, will it be enough to get you through to next year? To watch "Fast" for yourself, just

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Weeds: Season 3
I added the third season of the hit Showtime series Weeds to my must-haves for June because it's a must-watch before the fourth season starts up this month. This is a series I love to own because I want to watch the lovely Mary-Louise Parker and gang whenever I get the urge.

As I said in my must-haves post, the seasons prior to this one always balanced dark elements with high comedy but this third go-around is mostly dark. New faces in the cast this third season include Matthew Modine playing a real estate mogul and Mary-Kate Olsen as the religious (yet still tokey) girlfriend of Nancy's (Parker) son Silas. Even Carrie Fisher pops up - but that's all I'll say, so as not to spoil the fun.

Special features include eight commentary tracks, the full set of Good Morning Agrestic videos, and a sampler of the show's soundtrack.

read more. Semi-Pro I saw Semi-Pro when it first came out and had to admit that while the old Ferrell '70s shtick is getting old, I still buckled over in laughter during some parts. Instead of playing up the inflated ego of an anchorman, ice skater, or race car driver, this time Ferrell tackles the role of basketball player/manager. He sports an afro and his jiggly white skin is shoved into a teeny-tiny uniform for a good portion of the film. It's not the best thing around, but definitely a crowd pleaser if you need something to flip on the tube with a group of friends. Special features include: Improv; "Love me sexy" - The Story Behind the One-Hit Wonder; Re-creating the American Basketball Association; 4 days in Flint; and The Man Behind Semi-Pro. Rescue Me: Season 4 First of all, creepy cover, right? Fans of the critically acclaimed FX series starring Denis Leary can rejoice at the release of this exciting season on DVD. I've only paid passing attention to this show (it can be really intense!) but I have a secret soft spot for Leary, and the show's premise is compelling. This is how Netflix summarizes the fourth season: "Haunted by the loss of friends who perished in the disaster, his failed marriage and his son's tragic death, Gavin grapples with his past, his future and his sanity." Like I said: intense. Special features include six featurettes, 22 deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

The original vampire family hosts a ball on this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, and the whole town puts on their finest formal wear for the event of the supernatural season. Elena has two dates to the event, but it's her date to meet the original witch that gives us insight into what's in store for Klaus and his siblings.

Speaking of Klaus, we get some developments between him and Caroline that are sweet and promising (even if she's a bit cautious to date him because of his cruelty in the past and general bloodlust). There's also a hot hookup that I didn't see coming, so there's lots to talk about this week. To get to the good, the bad, and the bloody, just keep reading.

My Week With Marilyn Director Talks Michelle Williams and the Modern Marilyn Monroe Obsession

"It's a love letter to the agony and ecstasy of celebrity," director Simon Curtis, pictured above, told me about his latest project, My Week With Marilyn. The film starring Michelle Williams is out on Nov. 23, and follows the icon on a 1956 trip to London, which doubled as a honeymoon with playwright Arthur Miller and a work trip to film The Prince and the Showgirl. The movie, based on two books, catches up with Marilyn after her husband leaves and she begins to befriend 23-year-old set assistant Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne).

My Week With Marilyn attempts to pull back layers of Marilyn the sex symbol to reveal a more authentic depiction of the private star - without turning her into a depressed or drudged-out caricature. I sat down with the filmmaker, and here's what Simon Curtis told me about Michelle's performance and what he learned about Marilyn Monroe.

TrèsSugar: Why did you want Michelle Williams to play Marilyn Monroe?
Simon Curtis: With Marilyn Monroe you have a certain, very limited number of people who are the right age, the right potential Marilyn Monroe looks. Michelle was way at the top of my list. Not only is she gifted and brilliant, she's incredibly hardworking and she wanted her performance to be as good as I did.

TS: You came in with high expectations. Did the performance exceed that?
SC: Yes, it does actually. You never know when you're making something, but she just amazed me on every single day. There's something about her fearlessness taking on the complexity of Marilyn, who I think a modern mental health professional would diagnose somewhere in the bipolar, borderline personality area. And certainly those wild mood swings - one of those beguiling things about Marilyn is that you never knew who was going to walk in the door, or who was going to walk out. And Michelle just went for it and presented this multifaceted character who's also incredible as Marilyn.

TS: What about those bookend song performances by Michelle? I had to do a double take for the final one because I couldn't quite tell if it was Michelle or Marilyn.
SC: We wanted to present in those songs the fantasy, the Marilyn people saw or remember, because so much of our film is this private, unexpected Marilyn.

TS: The movie is a window into her life rather than a biopic. By experiencing the details of her life, what do you think will surprise audiences about Marilyn?
SC: This is a very crucial time in Marilyn's life. In 1956, she came to London with such high hopes because she was going to work with the great Laurence Olivier, she had set up her own production company way ahead of her time, was in fact a producer of this film, and of course was married to the great Arthur Miller, who she thought was going to rescue her and give her some intellectual credibility. And the story of our film is how those things all went very quickly wrong.

TS: But there's a lot of humor in that dark story of things gone wrong. It sort of surprised me how feel-good it was in a way.
SC: I'm glad. It's a very nuanced film and there is a lot of darker stuff, but that's right. It's a love letter to filmmaking, the agony and ecstasy of filmmaking. I love it that the actors found so much humor, specifically Ken Branagh. We wanted it to have all of those qualities.

With my early-morning workouts getting depressingly darker as the year draws to a close, I’m starting to wonder if I should try to squeeze in some of my sweat sessions at lunch. The "sweat" part is what gets me, though: how do I do my exercise, stop sweating, clean up, make my hair presentable again, and fix my makeup - all in just one measly hour? In need of some woman-to-woman advice (because, let’s face it, guys have it way easier in the cleanup department), I turned to my four favorite trainers (and great gals to boot) - Ramona Braganza, Amy Dixon, Kristin McGee, and Michele Olson. They responded with a bunch of savvy tips that have left me thinking, Yes, I could do that! Allow me to share them with you.

Choose strength
You'll sweat a lot less while doing resistance training than you will during cardio, says Braganza, a Los Angeles-based celebrity trainer who counts Jessica Alba and Halle Berry among her clients. If you can, save the cardio sessions for when you have more time to clean up and shower.

Stay cool
If you do choose cardio, keep sweat to a minimum by drying off with a cold towel, suggests Amy Dixon, a trainer and exercise physiologist based in Santa Monica, Calif. Freeze it overnight at home and pop it in the fridge at work (or keep it in an insulated bag with a cold block) until you need it. So refreshing! To halt sweat faster post-workout, drink very cold water (keep that in the fridge too) to reduce your core body temperature faster, says Michele Olson, PhD, a trainer and professor of exercise science at Auburn University, in Auburn, AL.

Maybe it was the absence of flashy '20s flashbacks, but I wasn't quite as excited by this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries. Stefan, Klaus, and Rebecca are still in Chicago, although it appears that their fun time in the Windy City is over. Back in Mystic Falls, Elena and Damon are forced to confront the fact that their attraction to each other is becoming more obvious to everyone around them, whether they're ready to act on it or not.

Caroline's little papa problem also comes to a head this week, as does Jeremy's ghost girlfriend situation, and he spends some weird quality time with Anna while Bonnie also comes back to town. Ready to recap the good, the bad, and the bloody? Just keep reading.

Miranda Kerr and Baby Flynn Continue Jet-Setting With an LA Departure

Miranda Kerr carried her son, Flynn, through LAX yesterday as they prepped to board a flight out of town. The mother-son duo spent time at their California home after a whirlwind few months of travel. Miranda, Flynn, and Orlando Bloom were based in Australia and New Zealand during August and much of September. She had various promotional obligations with Aussie retailer David Jones, as well as with her own Kora Organics skin care line, while Orlando was in Wellington, New Zealand, shooting The Hobbit. The jet-setting mom is a frequent contributor to Kora's blog, and a recent post included Miranda's supplement shake recipe. Orlando's doing his own fair share of story sharing in the run-up to the release of The Three Musketeers on Oct. 21. Orlando Bloom's Men's Health issue featured the actor talking about his risk-taking lifestyle as well as his dog, Sidi. The actor said of his pet, "I rescued this man in Morocco about seven years ago now. . . . He has been everywhere with me."
