NBC's Fall Schedule: My Take

Now that I've had a while to think through NBC's announcement of its fall schedule this morning, I have some thoughts on which news is good, which is bad and which is still a little baffling. Take a spin through my list, then let me know what you think.

Airing "Friday Night Lights" at 10 p.m. on Friday? Coffin, meet the nail. This strikes me as a very bad idea, and not just because it will conflict with actual high school football games. Sure, the ratings bar is lower on Fridays, but that's because nobody watches TV then - as big a fan as I am of this show, even I'll be TiVo-ing it most weeks rather than staying in to catch it live. I already had reasons to be worried about a second season, and this isn't making me feel better.
Speaking of bad ideas, I don't like "The Office" being on at 9 p.m to take on "Grey's Anatomy." It might be NBC's most popular comedy, but it's not a ratings powerhouse - and I'm sure a lot of "Office" fans already watch something at that time. I am glad they backed away from making every episode an hour, though.
I have no idea how NBC kept the "Heroes" spinoff a secret, and maybe that explains why we don't know a whole lot about it yet. Here's what we do know: The six stand-alone episodes will air when "Heroes" is on hiatus, they'll involve characters we haven't seen before, and at the end we'll be able to vote for one character who will make the leap over to "Heroes" in the next season. I like that we'll have something to keep us occupied when "Heroes" is taking a break - though exactly when "Origins" will air still isn't known. I just hope the quality stays high so it doesn't detract from original "Heroes."

More thoughts if you

There's not a single new comedy on NBC's fall schedule ("The IT Crowd" has been picked up, but it doesn't have a time slot yet). That's a pretty dramatic shift for a network that was known for its comedies for years. I am pretty psyched about "The IT Crowd," though, whenever it premieres; you can read more of my take and see some clips from the original British show over here.
Of the new shows, I'm probably most excited for "Lipstick Jungle" and "Chuck," and I'm surprised NBC isn't pairing "Bionic Woman" with "Heroes" - though "Journeyman" sounds like it has enough supernatural elements to make it a good fit too.
NBC execs said a while back that they'd be producing more cheap reality programs, and it's true: Most nights of the week have a reality or game show in the 8 p.m. hour.
Assorted once-buzzworthy pilots that didn't get picked up: Cop show "Fort Pit" (read its baffling description here), "Area 57" with Paul Reubens as an alien, and the Spike Lee-directed "M.O.N.Y."

Titanic Obsessed? So Are We - We Hunt Down the Perfect Film-Inspired Looks

If you loved Titanic as much as we did the first time around, you're probably lining up at the box office as we speak. I’ve been watching Downton Abbey along with much of the rest of the country, obsessed with the World War 1 era story of class, heartbreak, and romance. The servants, of course, are a lot more interesting than the aristocrats. But in the end it’s all about whether or not Mary, the eldest daughter, will pick a suitably wealthy man. For a while she was matched off with a newspaper baron who was plenty wealthy, but in a new and flashy kind of way. Her destiny is with Matthew, who in a twist caused by the sinking of the Titanic, is the heir to her father’s fortune.

Polyamory: Nature or Choice?

Yeah, it's about the romance. But it’s also about the money. Her parents are trying to push, plod, and cover-up (a little indiscretion with a Turk that both took Mary’s virginity and the handsome young man’s life all in one bedtime romp) in order to get their daughter matched off properly. And save the family.

Watching all that courtship for money I had to reflect on 2012 and how many couples I know where a woman clearly married a much older man at least in part because of significant wealth. I can remember a time when that kind of thing was frowned upon but honestly I can’t remember anyone so much as mentioning it even in situations where it’s painfully obvious.

Am I totally out of my mind?

Obviously it should be added that prior to the concept of the gold digger there was the concept of a "dowry" in which a wife came with money to compensate a husband for taking on the burden of supporting his bride (an equally insane and sexist practice IMO).

It seems to me that at one time women’s liberation meant that there was a certain amount of equality of expectation in terms of economic support being provided by both spouses. And in that context, marrying for money was frowned upon as selling out. Better to go to graduate school, get a real job, and come to family responsibilities equally equipped to make a buck, write a book, or change a diaper.

Obviously many, many women work their asses off. In fact more women than men are in the work force according to Hanna Rosin of End of Men fame. And more women are in college too. Which makes the gold digger phenomenon even stranger to me.

It seems that if you are young and beautiful and smart as a woman, it is totally acceptable - in fact almost expected - that you marry a guy a generation older than you with a boat load of cash. In a weird way it’s become a sign of liberation to use your sexuality to command the highest bidder.

Of course in each one of these equations there is a flip side. The much older, rich guy looking to settle down with a woman the age of his daughter, if he has any.

I’m not passing judgement on either side, only noticing that when it comes to mating practices at the upper end of the socio-economic spectrum we really haven’t progressed much beyond Downton Abbey, as much as we’d like to pretend that we have.
