TV Tonight: Cougar Town, Modern Family and Eastwick

It's a big night for ABC - the network is premiering three shows tonight including half of their new Wednesday block of comedy. Hank and The Middle will take over the 8 o'clock hour next week, but tonight brings a few shows I'm actually pretty excited about. First up is Modern Family which is one of my favorite new comedies and after you watch you'll see why we've been saying "Why the face?" to each other in the office for weeks already. The pilot of Cougar Town didn't thrill me, but Bill Lawrence and Courteney Cox eased my fears at the TCAs. Cougar Town has apparently undergone some changes before it hits the air tonight so I'm eager to see whether any of the jokes have gotten less cringe-worthy.

At 10 there's Eastwick starring Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price and Jaime Ray Newman. As for Paul Gross? Well you'll have to watch to find out exactly what's up with his otherworldly character. At times it's a little too Practical Magic meets Desperate Housewives, but enough happens in the first episode to keep me watching - at least for a few episodes. Considering how much I love Glee and So You Think You Can Dance - speaking of which don't miss our awesome new giveaway! - it's one of those nights I'm extra thankful for TiVo. Do You Agree With Last Night's Winner and Loser on Project Runway?

On last night's episode of Project Runway, the designers tackled maternity wear as they attempted to dress a very pregnant Rebecca Romijn. I really liked the challenge - the models looked hilarious in their fake bellies and it was sweet to see three moms as the judges. I also thought the winner and loser were spot on this week, though I don't want to spoil the results for those of you who haven't seen it yet. So what do you think - do you agree with last night's winner and loser? Oh, and don't forget to vote in our awesome Project Runway bracket!

Pilot Watch: Eastwick

The networks have announced their Fall schedules, but which series will actually be worth watching? Throughout the Summer, as I watch the pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. Note that a lot can change before a show actually makes it to air, so these aren't reviews, just quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's pick: ABC's drama Eastwick.

What's it about? The lives of three women are changed forever when they are brought together by a handsome devil (literally) who helps them harness their powers as witches. With magic, they learn to stand up for themselves, turn personal desires into reality, and raise a little hell.

Who's in it? Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price, Jaime Ray Newman, Paul Gross.

The good: Now that Lipstick Jungle is resting in peace, it's nice to see a fresh new trio of women to cheer for (or, well, fresh duo and Price, who moves over from Lipstick). It's a fun, wish-fulfillment type of show, and who hasn't thought about how cool it would be to have magic powers?

The bad: Translating a movie to a TV series can be difficult, and it seems like Eastwick doesn't know what kind of show it wants to be. The pilot was funny and campy, but it also took on some pretty heavy themes. It plows through a lot of story lines in the first episode, making me wonder if it's going to burn out before it even gets started.

Will I watch? It's debatable. I'll probably check out the first few episodes, but I'm not ready for a season-long commitment just yet.

Eastwick Casts Rebecca Romijn as Its Third Witch

The trio of witches in ABC's Eastwick pilot is complete. Rebecca Romijn has been cast as the third witch, joining a cast that includes Lindsay Price and Jaime Ray Newman.

Romijn will play Roxie, "a Bohemian and sharp-tongued single mother." She'll be playing off Joanna (Price), a hard-working but shy newspaper reporter, and Kat (Newman), a nurse and mother of five. The three of them are all witches who begin to find their powers.

I wonder if this means the official end for Romijn's Alexis over at Ugly Betty? Eastwick is a pilot being made for ABC, though, so maybe if the network picks it up, Romijn could slip off to Mode every now and then. What do you think of this cast? Do you think Romijn could pull off a role like this?

Five Questions for Ugly Betty

The onset of Summer also means the return of my Five Questions series, in which I take a look back at the most recent seasons of some favorite TV shows and pose some hypothetical questions about their future. Today's questions are for Ugly Betty, which will start its third season in the Fall.

Is it time for a new focus other than Betty's love life? In the season finale, Betty was left choosing between a trip abroad with Gio and a lifetime with Henry in Tucson. I think it's fairly obvious that instead of choosing either guy, she's going to choose herself. But with the recent casting news that Betty might get yet another love interest added to the mix, I'm worried that a love triangle-turned-square will be too much. I'm secretly hoping that Betty just chooses Gio and then we get to move on. Betty's too smart for this constant tug of war between guys. Even more intriguing is the fact that the actor who plays Henry, Christopher Gorham, just signed on to star on a new CBS drama this Fall.
Will shooting in New York City give the show a new look and feel? It's always struck me as funny that Ugly Betty takes place within the high fashion industry in New York when the set design screams L.A. I've never quite gotten a Devil Wears Prada vibe from the show. I'm curious if shooting on the streets of New York will give Betty a new edge that might inject some energy into its third season. Or perhaps we won't even be able to tell, given that the move was primarily intended to save money.

Are you prepared for Daniel the dad? We learned at the end of last season that Daniel - shocker! - knocked up some model once upon a time and now he has a kid. He was also completely squeezed out of business at Mode, so presumably the new season will pick up with Daniel devoting himself to being a good father. I think there is room for fun moments as he sorts out raising a kid, but frankly, I enjoy Daniel the player and I wonder if this dad stuff will get old fast.
Is Hilda's man a sleaze or a soul mate? Place your bets now. D'oh! If there is one thing that breaks my heart and makes me yell at my TV, it's Hilda getting jerked around by men! I was sad to find out that her hot coach love interest is married (sort of). We're left wondering if the guy is a total waste of her (and our) time, or if that was just the writers having fun with cliffhangers. I'm not sure how much I like the guy, but I want Hilda to be happy so I hope they do right by her!
Would the show be the same without Alexis? Rumors have swirled that the character of Alexis Meade will begin to get phased out due to Rebecca Romijn's new status as a recurring actor on the show instead of a series regular. I like Alexis as a villain and I like Alexis as part of the Meade clan. Either way, it's great for Daniel to have a sister/brother and if she leaves, I can't help but think there will be a big gaping hole in the show.

Tribeca Preview: Lake City

The description of this movie caught my eye largely because of the eclectic cast list: Sissy Spacek, Rebecca Romjin, Drea de Mateo, and . . . Dave Matthews. Yup, Dave "Ants Marching" Matthews. The story follows Billy (Troy Garity) and his young son Clayton who are on the run from Billy's wife's (de Mateo) drug dealer (Matthews) after his wife stiffs him and disappears. Desperate, Billy hides out at his mother's (Spacek) countryside house in Virginia where he "reconnects with his childhood friend, now a local police officer (Rebecca Romijn), and begins to confront his troubled past" in the midst of escalating threats against his family.

I love seeing Sissy Spacek still getting work, and a family drama seems best suited for her (though she is also pretty funny as Andy Samberg's mom in Hot Rod). Also, after his turn on House, I'm curious to see what Dave Matthews can do with this threatening drug-dealer role.

Ugly Betty Rundown: Episode 5, "A League of Their Own"

How much did I love this week's episode of Ugly Betty? So, so much! What can I say, give Mark a completely endearing romantic interest and I'm sold. The only person whose story is bugging me is Betty herself, but thankfully the rest of it totally makes up for her and Henry being blah. Also, it is just me or is Rebecca Romijn totally carrying this season? Love it. Here are my thoughts:

How is Daniel completely unable to realize what is going on with Mode? Is he more inept than ever? Shouldn't Betty be seeing right though Willie's plot for Meade Publication domination? Or is she keeping quiet because of their rooftop deal? How many episodes before all the truth is uncovered....November sweeps is right around the corner.
Hilda and her cemetery friends were sad/cute. While it's not the most uplifting crown to hang out with (you know, 5 PM bedtime and dentures), at least she can talk about Santos. Hot, hot Santos.

Amanda and Mark were in top form last night. "Hes a 9, I'm a 8" "He's a 10, you're a 6." "You're a bitch, I'm a 7." Also Amanda messing with Betty's online dating was pretty great. Here's to Cliff staying around for a while.
Ugh, so happy that Hilda was finally snapped into realizing what is going on with Justin. I miss fashion-y Justin, so hopefully he can find a way to honor the memory of his dad and memorize all the Spring lines.
Betty's list of things that she can't life without for her dating profile: "Doughnuts, my family..."

John Cho is also a contender for the best new addition to the cast. His one-liners never fail at making me laugh.
Alexis line of the night: "This Golden Boy's gotta go wash ink off his boobs."
Speaking of Alexis, yay for remembering. She and Willie are totally going to have it out sometime soon. And yay for us for getting ringside seats.
So, I give up. I'm never going to like Betty and Henry together. The ending literally had me yelling at my TV. When Betty was all, "Everyone's going to say its a big mistake." Yes, yes it is. Sure he understands her and thinks her quirkiness is adorable, but he just bugs me. Am I alone on that?

What did you think of the episode? Loving Mark and Cliff as much as I am (if that's possible)? Are you swooning over Betty and Henry and I'm just crazy? Is Mode going to keep going under? Man, I love this show.

Ugly Betty Rundown: Episode 4, "Grin and Bear It"

Let's get right to it: last night's Ugly Betty was a blast! That was mostly thanks to Rebecca Romijn who killed it as Alexis figuring out how to put on make up/dress/act/go to the correct bathroom as a woman. I guess then maybe she was in character when she was walking into Letterman yesterday? Ha. On the other hand, Betty herself was disappointing. It was just hard to believe that she would ever, ever do something like that. Okay, no spoilers just yet. Here are my thoughts on the episode:

Back to Alexis for a second. I love that she thought that she had to use up all the make-up in the containers to get herself ready for the day...and that she didn't wear a bra. Great Amanda line: "Friends don't let friends wear glitter before noon." Such the thing a guy would do in that situation. She and Daniel are so cute as brother/sister these days.
Laugh out loud moment when Alexis has this recommendation for Mode cover girl: "She's big! She's sexy! She's outrageous! Anna Nicole Smith!" Insert awkward silence here.
I've been looking forward to James van der Beek's guest starring stint since I heard about it over the summer. I just wish there was going to be more of him. Bring back Dawson!

As expected, Justin is trying to be all tough just like his dad, failing his classes, drinking beer and making out with girls. Ha. Like he wants to do that. I must admit that Henry was a little endearing as the math tutor trying to work in Justin's love for fashion.

John Cho was a great guest star too, bringing in some of the best lines of the episode ("chillin under Rihanna's umbrella-ella"). If we can't have Dawson, can we at least have more of him in upcoming episodes?
Have I mentioned how much I love Marc and Amanda? "What year were you born?" "1991." "You're 16?" "1992." "Other way."
Sigh, so about Betty lying and saying the bear attack story was hers. So out of character, even if Betty would start to do that, she would so stop herself halfway through. Her guilt was funny enough, but the whole plot line just didn't sit well.
The quest for the Tweety Bird tattoo begins? Will it be Warren Beatty? Ted Kennedy? Who could it be? Ha! Also must heart Amanda finding Ugly Willi. You just know that will become public later sometime.
Willi launching her own Mode competitor is a perfect plotline. Also, all the other Meade Publications editors were fabulous. Yay, can't wait to see what happens with that one.
So Henry is the baby daddy. Can that plot be done now? I know it's just when I started to like him a little bit, but in general he just bugs me. Wishful thinking, I know.

The Results Are In: Recast "Sex and the City"

Every Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

This week's recast challenge was the most exciting recast ever, by far! It was so much fun reading through over 100 comments, though this also made it the most difficult recast decision to make. There were so many fantastic recast lists, but I did have to choose just one.

However, almost all of the lists submitted included actors who are younger than the ones from the original cast when "SATC" first started. Thus, the winning recast list does include younger actors, though, with a couple exceptions, they're mostly younger by just a few years.

As for individual castings that I loved, some of my favorites included casting Tina Fey as Miranda, Will Smith as Mr. Big and Elizabeth Banks as Carrie, though I was impressed with many of the other ideas as well. "Ugly Betty" Recap: Episode 17, "Icing on the Cake"

I knew this episode of "Ugly Betty" was going to be good when I heard Betty was going to ask her orthodontist on a date. Then I realized it would involve a Meade going to Queens, and I got even more excited. There's not too much I can say without spoiling the show, so to hear what happened, read more

Betty obviously can't hear the screams of "bad idea!" from the viewers at home, because in her effort to be friends with Henry and Charlie, she accepts an invitation to Charlie's birthday party. Christina points out that getting over heartbreak generally means avoiding the heartbreaker and insists that Betty take a date. So Betty calls her orthodontist, fakes a broken wire, and flirts shamelessly. Go Betty!

Daniel, meanwhile, is still sleeping with Grace, which he's keeping from Alexis, because nothing would drive a wedge between Daniel and Alexis faster than her finding out he's paying for top-shelf representation for the father she hates. Wilhelmina is all about wedge-driving, of course, so she hatches a plan to catch Daniel in his lie. Daniel's stowed Claire in a hotel room under a fake name so she won't get drunk and confess to murdering Fey, but Grace susses that out and shows up at the hotel. Daniel distracts Grace by insisting on sex, right now, on the floor, but Marc captures the whole thing on video and leaves the footage for Alexis to find.

Grace is in the middle of telling Daniel she knows Claire killed Fey - while they're in bed, natch - when Alexis walks in. Grace decides the case isn't worth the drama and walks out, and now Daniel and Alexis have a murderer for a mom and no lawyer.

Betty and her orthodontist go to Charlie's party, where Henry gets visibly jealous that Betty has a date. Soon, Betty gets a call from Claire, who says she needs a corporate credit card because she's "taking the first flight to wherever it is that people go when they disappear." In this family, disappearing tends to involve faking your death and coming back as a member of the opposite sex, but whatevs.

Betty stalls by taking Claire to Queens. I love when the Meades and the Suarezes interact; it just proves that dysfunctional families know no class boundaries. Claire keeps mistaking the orthodontist for Henry ("I've seen the accountant. Much hotter."), which helps the poor guy realize Betty still has feelings for Henry. Eventually, Claire decides to turn herself in, while Betty swears off seeing Henry.

Some other things of note:

Amanda finally became the victim of someone else's evil prank. A rival arranges for her to be presented with a designer creation named for her - which turns out to be, as Marc puts it, "a big silver rubber." She wears "The Amanda" proudly, even though it leads to her flopping around like a fish and standing on top of the toilet to pee.
I am so over the Constance/Ignacio plotline, but: She snoops on him, decides he's cheating on her with Claire, and slaps a tracking bracelet on his ankle. Immigration case worker or crazy stalker? We report, you decide.
Saddest exchange in television this year?

Henry: So what does that make us?"
Betty: "Two people who work in the same building."
