Imagine: What Lessons Would You Learn in Reality TV School?

So you wanna be a professional reality show contestant. It seems like a pretty easy gig - just be an exaggerated version of yourself while singing/racing around the world/working for Donald Trump. There's just one catch: First, you have to get cast, and you just can't seem to make the cut. What's a wannabe reality star to do?

Well, maybe you go to Reality TV School. It's not a joke. For just under $300, you can enroll in the New York-based school's five-week workshop, where students are schooled in dealing with reality TV conflict and staging an audition tape. Or, for just $139, you can check out a one-day version of the curriculum, including a Q&A with a Groomer Has It contestant who "graduated" from the workshop.

Besides finding this generally preposterous, I wonder: What specific lessons would one learn in Reality TV School? Making Offensive Comments to Stir Up Controversy 101? Intro to Being Secretly Evil? Advanced Seminar: Sassing The Judges?

At first glance, it doesn’t seem like there are many money lessons to learn from The Real Housewives.

One spent a season building a $1.8 million mansion and driving around a $1,280-per-month Escalade, only to file for bankruptcy with almost $11 million in debt.

Shortly postbankruptcy, she dropped another $60,000 on a shopping spree so she could continue to fit in with those in her social circle.

Even if you don’t end up with millions of dollars in debt - or have friends who are millionaires - trying to keep up with the Joneses (or the Gorgas, in this case) can not only make you feel lousy about yourself, but also inspire bad spending decisions. We call this phenomenon “money comparisonitis.”

How Having "Comparisonitis" Affects Us

In our own lives, the dangers of gazing enviously at the Real Housewives’ spending sprees, our neighbor’s new car, or that family down the street who can send their kids to private school are not only the fact that it makes us feel bad, but that it literally distorts our view of reality.

In other words, we look at celebrities like the Kardashians or the wealthier people we know, and we try to emulate their spending habits. “You’re not being truthful with yourself,” says Susan L. Hirshman, president of She Ltd., a consulting firm focused on enhancing women’s wealth, and the author of Does This Make My Assets Look Fat?. “As they make more money, that allows them to live a certain lifestyle.” In other words, you have to face facts and spend in accordance with your own budget, rather than feeling entitled to live a certain way just because other people do.

4 Reasons Why Miss Representation Should Be Mandatory Viewing in Schools

After interviewing Jennifer Siebel Newsom about her documentary Miss Representation, we were excited to watch the film on OWN last night. And it's truly incredible. Miss Representation explores how the way women are portrayed as objects in films, advertising, TV shows, and other media outlets directly affects the minimal number of women in leadership roles and how young girls view themselves. Not only is this documentary important for adult women to see, I think it's especially important for the next generations to watch. Here's why Miss Representation should be mandatory viewing in schools.

Wake-Up Call: We're often told that things are getting better for women in the US, but it was really eye-opening to realize that we've got a long way to go. In school, we learn about the history of women's rights, and the overall narrative is "see how far we've come?" But it's important to remember that in many ways things are getting worse for women, and girls need to recognize this in order to make a change. By accepting the idea that we're doing fine, we become complacent.
Specific and Current: We're so desensitized to women's negative portrayals in the media, we don't even recognize some of the ways women are degraded and dehumanized. This film does a great job of pointing out specific examples, down to the words that are used in a news article ("the female politician complained" vs. "the male politician said"), that keep us aware of what's going on. And girls are able to see current clips from TV shows and movies they're familiar with, so they can begin realizing how the information and images they're being fed is affecting their world and self-view.
Young Voices: I was blown away by how articulate and thoughtful the teens interviewed in the documentary were. I had tears in my eyes listening to their heartfelt and honest pleas for change and comments on women in the media. Young boys and girls may tune out adult-fed information, but seeing their peers speak candidly and intelligently about these issues may stir something in them.
Role Models: So many times the women that girls see on reality TV shows and in magazines are extremely thin, sexed-up, backstabbing, and praised for their looks over their brains. These are the women the next generation looks up to and mimics, whether they realize it or not. But this documentary is chock-full of the types of strong, intelligent leaders young girls should be looking up to, featuring interviews with positive role models such as Lisa Ling, Jane Fonda, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Gloria Steinem, Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, and Geena Davis. Their smart, and at times funny, words of wisdom give these girls a face and personality to match to the names they may have skimmed over in a textbook.

The Bachelorettes: Where Are They Now?

Monday is the premiere of The Bachelorette with Ashley Hebert as the lady with the roses. When I found out that Ashley was the next Bachelorette, I wasn't surprised. After all, she's just following in her predecessor Ali Fedotowsky's footsteps, choosing reality TV (or "love," if you don't want to be too cynical about it) over career. She claims she's just putting her dental school on hold, but isn't that what Ali said about her Facebook job? And now, for all intents and purposes, Ali's a "TV personality," with her last gig being an E! correspondent recapping The Bachelor.

Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with changing your priorities once you find love and start a family (hello, Trista Sutter), I'm just questioning the specific ladies who made career a big priority and then turned it into an "either/or": either I have a job I love or I look for a man to love. You could say Jillian Harris found a way to mix both, since she stayed devoted to her interior design career after the show, but then again, she's also split with former fiancé Ed Swiderski. To investigate this phenomenon further, I thought I'd look into what the Bachelorettes were doing before the show and what they are doing now, in addition to their relationship status. Check it out and weigh in, what do you think about girls like Ali and Ashley who traded their jobs for reality TV love?

Jamie Oliver on Food Revolution 2, Huntington a Year Later, and LA Schools

With Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, British culinary celebrity Jamie Oliver has made a name for himself as an advocate for healthier American eating. The show's first season, shot in obesity-stricken Huntington, WV, received critical acclaim and garnered a Primetime Emmy in 2010.

Food Revolution's second season returns to ABC April 12 at 8 p.m. The comeback takes place in Los Angeles and faces an entirely new set of challenges, including resistance from the city's public school system.

While in South Beach, Katie and I took a minute to ask the chef about season two, his troubles with the Los Angeles school system, and what he thought of Huntington losing its school funding. His surprising answers, when you read more.

90210 "Revenge of the Nerd": Most Scandalous Moments

The students of West Beverly get a taste of the Hollywood biz on this week's 90210. Adrianna's reality TV show is in full swing, so cameras are following her around to catch her every move - even if it takes multiple takes (anyone else think about The Hills?). Navid and Dixon are enjoying the perks of the entertainment industry as well: they get to meet Nelly!

But even in the midst of the glitz and glamour, there's still plenty of drama rearing its ugly head as several confrontations come to the forefront. Let's recap the night's biggest showdowns and shockers when you

Navid opens up Shirazi Studios 2.0. Navid gets the bright idea to clear his family name by starting his own production business. He gets Dixon on board, who of course comes up with the idea to produce music videos so he can rub elbows with famous artists. They visit a record label, spot a famous music producer (it's the guy from City Guys!), and soon they're booking Nelly as their first famous client (you know, because that would totally happen in real life). It's smooth sailing at the shoot - until Adrianna shows up with her reality cameras. To make her TV pilot more interesting, she approaches Nelly and gets booted from the set. Nelly's flustered by Adrianna's desperate attempt, but not to worry, because Dixon's massive stash of candy corn saves the day (Nelly really likes candy corn).
Navid admits to cheating on Adrianna. When Navid's trying to get Adrianna off set, he hits her where it really hurts: he admits to cheating on her. Even though he doesn't give Silver away, clearly it's only a matter of time before Adrianna discovers the truth. Now she's determined to sniff out the "skank" and bring her to justice. Well, that should at least spice up her reality show!
Emily finally shows her devious side to Annie's face. After scheming to get Annie to leave play rehearsal on an errand, Emily asks Liam to "run lines" with her, which basically means she can drape herself all over the guy and call it "acting." Annie walks into her dressing room, sees them together, and blows up. Emily plays innocent at first (even Liam believes her act), but when the two girls are alone in the bathroom later, the real Emily reveals herself. She tells Annie that she basically wants revenge, since Annie said such bad things about her to Dixon and Debbie. From the sound of it, Emily won't stop until Annie's life is completely miserable. Ugh, I don't know how much more I can take of her.
Naomi goes after Guru Sona to get her money back. With a bullhorn in tow, Naomi decides to take Guru Sona down right as she's celebrating the ground-breaking ceremony for her new land (which she paid for with Naomi's trust fund). Naomi gets in her car to embark on her mission, but right as she's about to drive away, her new lab partner at school, Max (Desperate Housewives's Josh Zuckerman), hops in the passenger's seat, intent on picking up soil samples for their joint project. Since he won't leave, Naomi brings him along. When they arrive on the scene, the Guru continues to pretend like nothing happened, until Max swoops in to the rescue! The science geek spots an endangered owl on the land, which means the Guru can't build on it, and the sale of the land is voided. Naomi's so happy that she hugs the guy, but wait, what is this? Could Naomi actually have feelings for the nerd?!
Teddy meets a new guy! When Teddy skips class after receiving a few derogatory remarks from his fellow classmates, Silver steps in to help him relieve some stress. Her remedy: hitting tennis balls off the school a la season two. No sooner is Teddy practicing his forehand and venting about Ian, then wham - Teddy actually hits someone! The victim is Marco, a cute soccer player who happens to be gay as well. Marco writes his number down for Teddy on the tennis ball (cheesy, but kind of adorable). I guess this means Ian is out of the picture for good.

Joe Zee Dishes the Hard Truth on Making It in the Fashion World

In the past couple of years, we've witnessed a number of talented designers forced to fold their business due to the ever-changing fashion industry and economic hardships. In times like these, it's always good to get some advice from someone who has been in the business for a while now - someone like Joe Zee. We recently chatted with the creative director of Elle Magazine and star/mentor of reality fashion show, All on the Line, about what to do, what not to do, and everything else in between. Listen up to what he has to say:

FabSugar: What has your experience been like on All on the Line and mentoring struggling fashion designers?

JZ: It's not the typical portrayal of fashion, it's something that feels real, genuine, and authentic. I was so moved emotionally. There were times when I was on the floor with them, jacket off, sleeves rolled up trying to help. There were also times when I was so mad at the designers, and there were other times when I wanted to hug them. I was so invested in their final outcome.

FS: Tell us why you think it's so important for designers to understand the business aspect, the balance between creativity and commerce, in the fashion industry.

JZ: People have to live in today, you can't just be an artist for art's sake, because you might as well live upstate with the doors locked with no computer, no phone, and just paint your heart out. Otherwise, if you want to do this for business, you have to start appealing to other people, that's the important thing.
