Turns Out Neanderthals Wore Foundation, Fierce Fur Bikinis

Well, OK, maybe that second part isn't true, but Raquel Welch made me want to believe. In any case, I've always been sad that neanderthals died out, but today I've got more reason than usual: apparently, they loved makeup as much as we do.

Archaeologists from England's University of Bristol recently unearthed a cache of neanderthal body paint, including a yellow-based foundation-type pigment, a bright red pigment, and a brilliant black pigment-all stored in lovely shells that rival a modern compact for elegance and functionality. While delightful, these finds are unsurprising, given the large body of evidence suggesting that neanderthal behavior and ritual were as complex as ours. Unfortunately, "neanderthal" continues to be a word associated with brutish behavior and a lack of higher intelligence. I realize these guys have been dead for 30,000 years, but given their comparable intelligence and heart-breaking likeness to ourselves, do you think it's right that we continue to refer to them pejoratively? First Look: Welcome to the Captain

Sometime after last May's Upfronts, CBS quietly picked up a comedy series about an eccentric group of people living in a fabled Los Angeles apartment building. Good thing they got it: With The Big Bang Theory out of episodes, Welcome to the Captain will take over its 8:30 p.m. Monday slot on the network's schedule starting Feb. 4.

The show comes from writer John Hamburg, who made his name whipping out movies for Ben Stiller (including Zoolander and Meet the Parents). Since it focuses on a group of wildly different strangers, it's no surprise that the cast is equally eclectic: Jeffery Tambor, Raquel Welch, Chris Klein, and Freaks and Geeks alum Joanna Garcia are among the stars.

The show looks a lot different from the other CBS comedies: It's shot in a style more like The Office than Two and a Half Men. That, for me, is good news, though I know millions of people like their CBS comedies just the way they are. The bad news is that none of the clips I've watched so far have made me laugh out loud - but maybe it's the kind of show that needs a full episode to get into a groove. Raquel Welch was a '60s It Girl, more for her striking appearance than for her acting chops. (Myra Breckenridge, anyone?) In spite of her questionable skills as a dancer, girlfriend sure looks hot in her space-girl outfit! But WTF?!
