TNT Pays Tolls to Promote Raising the Bar

When I saw this press release on the Internet, it took me a few billion reads to understand the connection between TNT paying road tolls for the lovely people of Atlanta, Orlando, Philadelphia, and Chicago and the network's new legal drama Raising the Bar. That's right, over this Labor Day weekend TNT is going to spring for two hours of free tolls, and they're also premiering a new show. The connection eluded me, but finally, I found this helpful quote in the release:

"With so many people on the roads Labor Day weekend, it's a perfect time to get our message out about the premiere of this outstanding new drama series," said Tricia Melton, senior vice president of marketing for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). "We are literally raising the bar by paying tolls on Labor Day weekend."

Get it? Toll booths have bars! They lift up when you pay! Yeah, I think it's a stretch too, but hey, they got me writing about it, I guess.

Anyway, I think TNT could have gotten a lot more creative with the the word "bar" and paying for stuff, so to see the other campaigns the network should have gone with, just

They could have talked to Mr. and Mrs. Refaeli, because more than anyone, they know what it is to raise the Bar! I'm sorry, I had to do it.
Bar tabs! Picking those up this weekend would have been awesome.
Candy bars. They're good. I bet lawyers eat them. They should give them out for free and everyone could raise them in the air.

What do you think? Lame attempt at marketing or ingenious campaign, even if there are several mental steps needed before one arrives at the word "bar"?

First Look: Raising the Bar

I'm curious about Raising the Bar, TNT's newest drama series, for a variety of reasons. One is that it comes from Steven Bochco, the legendary executive producer of LA Law and NYPD Blue who knows his way around a legal drama. Another is that it's yet another TNT show with strong female characters, including Jane Kaczmarek as a tough, no-nonsense judge. And a third is, well, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, now and forever Zack Morris to me, who has a seriously long, seriously funny hairdo.

The show, which is about two teams of lawyers - public defenders and district attorneys - working in New York City's justice system, premieres on Labor Day, but I've rounded up a couple of clips that give us an early glimpse. In one, we see Jerry Kellerman (Gosselaar), a passionate public defender, and Michelle Ernhardt (Melissa Sagemiller), a district attorney, battling wills. In the other, the actors on both teams introduce us to their characters, interspersed with plenty of clips from the show. Do you think Raising the Bar can transcend the generic legal show? TNT and TBS: The Official Networks of Strong Women?

I got a promotional e-mail today touting the Summer programming lineups on TNT and TBS. As I scrolled through looking for a return date for The Closer (July) and a start date for Raising the Bar (September), a banner at the bottom caught my eye:

"Kyra Sedgwick, Holly Hunter, Laura San Giacomo, Jordana Spiro, Nancy Travis, Jane Kaczmarek, and Gloria Reuben are just a few of the strong women coming to TNT and TBS this summer."

And they have good reason to spotlight that: Of the five series featured in the e-mail, only one (The Bill Engvall Show on TBS) has a male character in the lead. The rest are either female-led or have women in the majority of the starring roles: My Boys on TBS and all three of TNT's dramas, The Closer, Saving Grace, and the new series Raising the Bar. And, what's more, three of those four series have leading ladies over the age of 40 - a relative rarity in Hollywood.

I'm not sure if TNT and TBS set out to become networks full of programming featuring women who are tough, quirky, and relatable (and succeeding in roles typically earmarked for men, at that), but regardless, I find it encouraging that it's happened. They aren't the only networks in this game; FX's Damages drew a ton of acclaim with Glenn Close in its leading role. I just like the fact that these networks see their roster of shows with older, female stars not as a risk but as something to be celebrated. What's your take?

TNT Lines Up Mark-Paul Gosselaar for Legal Drama

With The Closer and Saving Grace, TNT already has two cop dramas in its stable of series. Now, it's adding some lawyers.

The network has picked up Steven Bochco's Raising the Bar, the newest drama from the producer of NYPD Blue, LA Law, and numerous other legal series. The show will focus on "the lives and cases of young lawyers who have been friends since law school, but who now work on opposing sides" and is set to premiere later this year.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who will always be Zack Morris to me, stars as an idealistic public defender, and Gloria Reuben of ER plays his passionate, protective boss. On the other side is a lawyer in the district attorney's office played by Melissa Sagemiller who will stop at nothing to bring people to justice. Those two, and other lawyers from their offices, face off in the courtroom of a slightly crazy judge played by Malcolm in the Middle's Jane Kaczmarek. I'm not sure I'll be able to get her Simpsons character out of my head when she's on screen.

I generally like TNT's original series, and Bochco certainly has the pedigree to pull this off. Plus, the news of any scripted television whatsoever sends my heart all aflutter these days. And it can't go wrong when Zach Morris is involved, right?

8 Myths About Sex Differences

We're happy to present this story from one of our favorite sites, The Good Men Project. Today, Agustín Fuentes points out that when it comes to men and women, what "everyone knows" isn’t what science shows.

Everyone knows that men and women are really different. We think differently and act differently because we are wired differently. I mean look at our brains and genitals: they are just plain different. Right?

Wrong.

What if many of the things we assume about the biology of difference are not so different at all? What if it is not our “wiring” but the ways in which our bodies and minds develop and play out in society that makes us seem so unalike? Could it be that men and women are more similar than we think?

I Dumped the Love of My Life and Now She Doesn’t Trust Me

Yes, women give birth and lactate and men do not. And yes, men are, on average, slightly larger than women and usually have greater upper body strength. There are these basic biological differences between the sexes and they are important . . . but why always focus on the differences and not the biological, and behavioral, similarities? Ahh, that would be because of gender.

Gender is a powerful reality; it is the perception and expectation of differences between males and females and it shapes both our bodies and our society. Gender differences are real and important, but they are not hard wired or even static. There is no biological or evolutionary mandate that only women really care for babies and show emotions, or that males are the best at economics and politics and prefer beers and skirt-chasing to domestic bliss. These are patterns of gender roles and expectations that shape the ways we look at our biology and behavior. They influence the way we expect the world to be. It is the strength of the societal myths about sex that fool us into thinking that men and women are so different by nature.

So let’s bust some of those myths.

Gender and sex are the same thing.

Sex and gender are interconnected, but not the same thing. Sex is a biological state that is measured via what chromosomes you have (XX or XY, usually) and aspects of your body and physiology. Gender includes the roles, expectations and perceptions that a given society has for the sexes. Most societies have two genders on a masculinity-femininity continuum. Some have more. We are born with a biological sex, but acquire gender. There is a ton of individual diversity within societies and sexes in regards to how sex and gender play out in behavior and personality.

There is an extensive body of data demonstrating this, but people interested only in specific differences between men and women choose to ignore it.

Male and female genitals are totally different.

Most people think that male and female genitals are about as different as can be: penis=male and vagina=female. But even this basic dichotomy is not quite correct: the genitals emerge from the same mass of embryonic tissue. For the first six weeks of life the tissue masses develop identically. At about 6-7 weeks, depending on whether the fetus has XX or XY chromosomes (usually), the tissues to start to differentiate. One part of the tissues begins to form the clitoris or penis and another forms the labia or scrotum. Another area begins to form into either the testes or the ovaries. This means that physiologically, male and female genitals are made of the same stuff and work in similar ways.

Male and female brains are different.

If there were really deep seated differences between male and female human behavior and biology they should show up in the brain. The genitals start in the same place and end up looking different, the brain does not. Our brains are pretty much the same. Male brains are a bit bigger than females’ (like their bodies) and females’ brains stop growing earlier than males (as with their bodies). However, whatever one may believe about other organs, in the case of healthy brains, size really does NOT matter one iota. There also might be a few differences in a small part of the brain called the straight gyrus (need more testing in this one). Other than these minor aspects there are no consistent and replicated reliable differences in male and female brains; it is a human brain . . . but how we use it is another matter.

Hormones make the difference.

Everyone thinks that males and females have different hormones . . . testosterone for men and estrogen for women. Nope, all the actual hormones in males and females are the same: there are no male-only or female-only hormones. Both men and women can get a flood of testosterone when they get into a fight or take part in an exhilarating sports match. Both men and women can get a flood of oxytocin and prolactin when they pick up a newborn baby. There can be differences in the levels, patterns, and impacts of some of these hormones in male and female bodies, but individual variation is often more important than the variation between the sexes.

Wee! A Total-Body Playground Circuit Workout

Playgrounds aren't just for the kiddos. Why not use the equipment to do a little strength training after you run or bike ride through the park, or while your children are playing (might as well tone your tush rather than just sitting on it)? Check out this five-minute circuit workout to target your entire body from head to toe. For a full workout, repeat the circuit six times through for a total of 30 minutes. Note that some cities have rules about adults using playground equipment, so double check before doing this workout.

Triceps dips on a bench: Sit on a bench and place the heels of your palms next to your hips. Walk your feet away from you about six or so inches and hop your tush off so you're hovering in front of the bench. Slowly bend at your elbows and lower your upper body down toward the floor until your arms are at about a 90 degree angle. Be sure to keep your back close to the bench. Once you reach the bottom of the movement, slowly push yourself straight back up to the starting position. Repeat for one minute.
Push-ups with both feet on a swing: Stand two feet in front of a swing and place your hands on the ground. Step onto the swing so the tops of both ankles are resting on the middle of the swing. Walk your hands out as needed so your body is in the top of a push-up position. Slowly bend your elbows, lowering your chest toward the ground, and then straighten them, coming to the starting position. Do as many push-ups as you can for one minute (it's OK to do them slowly).

Not only will it taste better, but you'll also save on calories: a lot of restaurant and bar margaritas are made with mixers that contain corn syrup and ingredients you can't pronounce. This recipe, which purists will love, has only 144 calories amd relies on natural, simple ingredients - not a bad way to spend happy hour!

Classic Margarita
Adapted from the Mr. Boston Official Bartender's Guide for iPhone

The margarita recipe is one that has been riffed on several times over, but, being a purist, I'm a fan of the classic recipe. And while "classic recipe" may be debatable, the popular 3-2-1 formula (three parts tequila, two parts lime juice, and one part Cointreau) is the one I always go back to. Salt is optional, but I prefer to make mine without.

If you find this recipe to be too tart for your tastes, the tiniest amount of agave syrup should do the trick.

Ingredients

Ice
1 1/2 ounces of 100 percent agave blanco tequila (I use Espolón or Herradura)
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1/2 ounce Cointreau

Directions

Fill rocks glass with ice; add tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau. Stir ingredients together until chilled; enjoy!

Makes 1 drink.
