Preview For My Life in Ruins Is Long, Kinda Boring

First off, this strange little trailer thing with subtitles is freakishly long (over four minutes!) and feels longer. This does not bode well for the comedy from My Big Fat Greek Wedding's Nia Vardalos.

When last we heard about My Life in Ruins, it was because Vardalos became the first filmmaker to be allowed to shoot inside the Acropolis. I was totally excited for this movie at that time. Now? Not so much.

From the trailer I'm guessing that - not unlike My Big Fat Greek Wedding - our protagonist learns how to love herself, loosen up and be confident, and from there everything falls into place for her. But the getting-there part looks ridiculously boring. When the majority of laughs come from Rachel Dratch's supporting character, we're in trouble.

Frankly, I am so disappointed! I really wanted Vardalos to have a big hit with this movie but she just isn't very engaging in the preview. Maybe there will be a better, official trailer before (if?) My Life in Ruins opens in theaters (the date of which is unknown). To check it out for yourself, read more.

Update: The video was removed from YouTube, but it looks like you can still view the preview here.

Movie Preview: Harold

"I'm going over the nerd wall and I ain't never going back." Those are words to live by.

Trying to guess exactly how the film Harold would shape up based on the casting news alone was kinda difficult. There is an odd mix of actors involved, including Cuba Gooding Jr., some Saturday Night Live alums (Rachel Dratch, Colin Quinn, Chris Parnell), '80s star Ally Sheedy, and cute young actors like Spencer Breslin and Nikki Blonsky in her first feature film role since Hairspray.

The trailer is goofy and sweet and makes me laugh. The idea of a kid with premature balding getting picked on is you know, heartbreaking, but I can't help but giggle at people mistaking the poor guy for an elderly person. And Cuba Gooding Jr. actually looks like he may be back on his game, as he seems pretty charming and funny in the preview. The whole thing looks sweetly absurd with something life-affirming at the core.

The movie opens in limited release July 11. To check the trailer, read more.

Where Would You Cast Rachel Dratch?

Ex-Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock star Rachel Dratch needs a job. Like, really needs a job. The woman probably best known for Debbie Downer sounded an awful lot like her former character chatting with New York Magazine recently. Talking about her downtime, she said:

I'm starting to go crazy. I’m ready for a job. . . . I'd work in a black-box theater company at this point. I'd work with George W.

Dratch definitely wasn't a good fit on 30 Rock, but given the right role, she can be hilarious. The trick, I think, will be finding the right balance between lovably awkward and flat-out crazy.

If I'm playing career counselor, I'd urge Dratch to stay away from movies: Frankly, if it didn't work for Molly Shannon, it probably won't work for her, either. But she could take a cue from Shannon's more recent decisions and nab a job on TV. To see some places I could picture her landing, just read more.

The Office or its spinoff - Dratch could have some fun as a new transfer to Scranton, but I could also see her anchoring the as-yet-untitled spinoff. Maybe she's a cranky assistant who hasn't left her desk in 20 years or a gossipy, socially awkward middle manager.

Miss Guided - If by some miracle this ABC comedy returns, I could see Dratch as a grumpy school counselor and rival to Judy Greer's perky Ms. Freely. And hey, if the show doesn't come back, give Dratch her own show where she plays a counselor.

Chuck - Suddenly, I'm having a very easy time picturing Dratch as a wisecracking, uniformed government operative.

Ugly Betty - Playing on Dratch's unconventional looks could be a good strategy - especially if it lands her at the Mode offices as a potential ally for Betty. Or maybe as a faux ally who turns to be evil. Hey, on that show, anything's possible.

Where else do you think Dratch could get a job?
