Box Office: A Memorable Prom Weekend

Maybe it's that time of the year, or perhaps there was a strong nationwide desire to see a scary movie, but whatever the reason, horror flick Prom Night was crowned queen at the box office this weekend. Variety reports that the movie's $22.7 million marks the best opening for a horror picture so far this year, possibly due to the teen-friendly PG-13 rating.

Though Street Kings is loaded with bloodshed and big names like Forest Whitaker and Keanu Reeves, it was still no match for the teen screamfest, earning second place with an estimated $12 million. 21, on the other hand, is still performing well, taking the third spot with $11 million. It was followed by Nim's Island, Leatherheads, and Horton Hears a Who.

Little family comedy Smart People starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page, and Dennis Quaid came in No. 7 earning about $4.2 million. The overall box office is still experiencing a slump compared to last year. I wonder if Forgetting Sarah Marshall will get more folks to the theaters next weekend?

Buzz In: Did You Have A Prom Song?

The horror remake Prom Night, opening this weekend, doesn't look like the kind of movie I'd love, but it did get me thinking about my own prom (which was, thankfully, free of blood and guts). There was a vague Dirty Dancing theme to mine, and the prom song was "I've Had the Time of My Life," which seemed a little presumptuous to me. As Rayanne from My So-Called Life would say, I had a time, but I certainly wouldn't call it the time of my life. Anyway, this led me to wonder: Did other people have a prom song? And did it in any way influence the prom experience?

Conducting an informal little office poll, I got a pretty garden variety of high school dance standards, like "Wonderful Tonight," "Lady in Red," "We Are Family," and "Oh, What a Night." Then there was the girl who, lacking a prom song, decided with her friends that their song for the night would be "Ghetto Superstar."

What about you? Did your prom have a song? Did you like it? Hate it? Skip prom altogether?

It's Pop Culture Prom Week

Break out the wrist corsages and sparkly tiaras - it's prom week! Yes, I know it's only January, but the pop culture universe has brought everyone's favorite spring formal back this week, big time. Consider:

We kicked off the week with the new trailer for Prom Night, the remake of the '80s horror flick that makes your own prom night, no matter how heinous, seem tame.
Then, NBC Entertainment Co-Chair Ben Silverman invoked the memory of the formal in an interview with E! when NBC was still angling to keep the Golden Globes on the air, saying: "Sadly, it feels like the nerdiest, ugliest, meanest kids in the high school are trying to cancel the prom. But NBC wants to try to keep that prom alive." The ugly, mean, nerdy writers then retaliated by promising to throw Silverman the prom of his dreams outside NBC next week.
And finally, in what can only be described as perfect timing, Project Runway went to prom, too, trotting out a parade of candy-colored gowns for 17-year-old aspiring goddesses. The dresses were just the second-best part of the episode, though, next to the prom photo flashbacks to the designers' awkward years.

I'm not sure what caused this sudden prom frenzy, but - just like real prom - I'm fretting less about that and more about whether anyone will ask me to the dance. Think Michael Cera would be my date?

Movie Previews: Prom Night, Then and Now

You know, I think I would be much more impressed by this trailer for the new version of horror movie Prom Night if it were maybe one minute shorter, or otherwise didn't include what seems like way too much of the film in the preview. As it is, I think the first part of the preview is scary enough, nothing original, but it is a remake after all. By the last 30 seconds or so, though, I'm bored. The story is predictable: a bunch of high school kids go to their prom and arrange to stay in hotel rooms afterward. Then a crazy sadistic killer shows up to terrorize the group - particularly the nubile young Donna (Brittany Snow) - and they must figure out how to survive... prom night.

Glee-ful Highlights From Episode "Prom Queen"

Glee invites us to prom this week, and while it manages to stress the characters out more than excite them, the episode ends with most everyone having a good time. New Directions is asked to perform at the event, giving the glee club another chance to tune up before nationals while guest star Jonathan Groff returns and also goes to the prom.

The big reveal of the episode - who gets voted prom queen - is shocking and initially upsetting, but it fails to ruin the night for the McKinley high students. Plus, there are a load of fantastic performances this week, all of which I'm ready to chat about when you

OnSugar TV Recap: Parenthood Episode "New Plan"

We open this week's episode with Crosby rehashing his dalliance in an empty house to an unidentified woman. He seems to be making new plans in the wake of Jasmine's decision last week. Crosby isn't the only one making possibly questionable plans. It's prom and Adam is worried that Haddie's after-prom plans may include sex. Sarah is working hard to become a playwright and is forced to make a choice when it comes to her work. Amber makes some choices about college and her future. While everyone else is making life-changing decisions, Julia is left to deal with one that was dealt to her.

All Crosby wants is to get his family back. His indiscretion is still haunting him with Jasmine gone and troubles with Adam. Looking for someone to talk to and trying to find a way to get Jasmine back, Crosby recounts the story to a real estate agent. After seeing the house, Crosby goes to Adam with his new plan. However, Adam is still pissed and kicks him out. Adam needs to let it go. He and Kristina can be so self-righteous. It's really annoying. Clearly, Crosby knows that what he did was wrong and takes full responsibility for it. He didn't mean for it to happen. I also hate how they blame it all on Crosby and act like Gabby was the victim. That is not the case, but that's a post for another day. At the end of the day, they are family and Adam just needs to forgive him. In an attempt to be diplomatic, Sarah argues this point to Adam and urges him to be there for Crosby and look at the house because he's in pain. As the rest of the Braverman siblings take a look at the house, Crosby admits that he hastily and stupidly bought the house (not the pretty cottage-style house, but the shanty across the street) as a grand gesture. He can't back out now because he sold the house boat to do it. I'm going to miss that little boat. In the end, Adam shows up telling him that it was a grown up thing to do and agrees to help him fix up the house.

In this earnest high school comedy, Aimee Teegarden stars as an overachieving straight-A student, Nova, who heads the prom committee. When an unfortunate accident ruins the decor she's been working on for the dance, the principal assigns rebellious student Jesse (Thomas McDonell) to help her rebuild the props. The movie also focuses on some of their fellow students as the class prepares for their big night. While you may know what to expect from the story, the film offers a cute look at teenage romance. DVD extras include a blooper reel and seven music videos.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family

Tyler Perry returns as titular character Madea in this dramedy about a family facing a number of problems. The sassy matriarch rallies around her niece (Loretta Devine) as she experiences a health scare, and offers her support to other members of the family as they navigate issues ranging from a failing marriage to the temptation to deal drugs. Madea's antics may feel familiar to audiences who have seen films in the franchise before, but fans of the raucous humor won't be disappointed. DVD extras include four featurettes, including "Madea's Family Tree" and "By-Reen: The Baby Mama From Hell."

Prom: Harmless Fun

The Disney film Prom is exactly what you would expect from the studio known for its parade of princesses: sweet, candy-colored, and completely wholesome. Aimee Teegarden stars as Nova, the typical overachieving student who is at the top of her senior class and heading up the prom committee. She has tasked herself with ensuring that the prom is a perfect night for everyone, believing that it can somehow right all the wrongs for any student who's had a less-than-ideal high school experience. When an accident destroys the prom decor she has worked so hard on, the principal assigns the school's resident slacker, Jesse (Thomas McDonell), to help her, much to Nova's chagrin.

The prom is the linchpin for several other student storylines as well: one long-term couple breaks up just before the big night, one girl dreads the event because she's worried about telling her boyfriend that she won't be going to the same college as him after graduation, a younger couple is brought together, and one hapless character can't find a date to save his life. All of these stories make Prom at once feel like you never really get to know anyone (or care), but it also makes the film easily digestible. To find out what I liked about Prom, just

read more. The one storyline you can get invested in is the opposites-attract relationship of Jesse and Nova. Though Jesse is the archetypal bad boy, you know that it's only a matter of time before those after-school decoration meetings lead to something more. It's a romantic formula we've seen time and again, yet the charm of Teegarden and McDonell makes it delightful. The burgeoning attraction between Jesse and Nova is totally innocent, as are all the other romantic entanglements. Everyone's problems are as benign as they can be, the shell of real teenage problems. Realistic? No. It's a sugarcoated version of high school. This prom itself is the most innocuous of all time - American Pie this isn't. It's really aimed at kids who aren't in high school yet, as a lofty fantasy of what's to come. Still, it arouses nostalgia in anyone who went to their prom, and by the time Jesse and Nova finally get to take a spin on the dance floor, you're happy to see them get their perfect, PG kiss.
