What to Download: New Music Today

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores. So I take a spin through each week's music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. If you're anywhere near a Target, Prince's new albums (a three-CD project) are now available exclusively at the retailer. Here are today's selections:

Jazz it up: I really love Diana Krall, and on many occasions, her deep, gorgeous voice is exactly what my life needs to have playing in the background. Today she's released a new collection that includes covers of songs by artists like Al Green and jazz standards once tackled by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald. I'm really enjoying her versions of "Walk on By" and "Too Marvelous For Words."

Now that "Young Folks" just got out of your head: Here comes Peter Bjorn & John with more catchy tunes! This new release by the Swedish trio isn't as folksy as the previous album and has a lot of synthesizer going on instead. I'm liking it but not totally in love yet - just need to take more listens. Check out "Nothing to Worry About," and "It Don't Move Me" for a taste of what PB&J's sound is all about these days.

Piano man: Gavin DeGraw has been promoting his new album as a stripped-down version of the kind of commercial hits that have made him so successful. From what I've listened to so far, that does appear to be the case, with many of the tunes including only his voice and the piano. Tracks like "Dancing Shoes" and "Stay" demonstrate his ability to pour real emotion into his lyrics - and they're pretty, to boot!

Is Prince Being Fair to His Fans?

Prince has done his share of ludicrous things in his lifetime, and admittedly, the news that he's gearing up to sue his fan sites doesn't even compete with when he changed his name to a symbol or painted his house purple. But it's still pretty crazy: Prince and his lawyers are demanding that his major fan sites remove all photographs, images, lyrics, and album covers, saying the sites are violating copyright law.

On the one hand, I can understand a famous person wanting to protect how his image is used. On the other hand, going after the fans who support him most might not be the best PR strategy. What do you think?

Hot Track: Prince, "The One U Wanna C"

I've never had a shortage of love for Prince. The man has written some truly stunning songs and provided the soundtrack to the wilder house parties I've attended. But admittedly, I had stopped paying much attention to Prince - until this year's Super Bowl halftime show, when the purple one reminded me how much he rocks.

He has a new album out July 24 called Planet Earth, and if you're anything like me, you haven't really considered the possibility of getting excited about a new Prince album. This new track, titled "The One U Wanna C," should change your mind. The song, which you can download here, is both refreshingly familiar - oh, those honeyed vocals - and totally unexpected, with rockabilly-style guitars, a jaunty vocal melody, funky overtones, and even a touch of twang.

Also, is he really singing "If you wanna get creamy"? I think he is. Welcome back, Prince.

Awards Season Marches On: the NAACP Image Awards

The Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the Grammys have been doled out to the most deserving talent, but the awards show season isn't over yet. On Friday night, the stars gathered in Los Angeles for the 38th Annual NAACP Image Awards, which honor artists, particularly those of color, across movies, TV, and music.

Many of this year's honorees are well-awarded already, including Jennifer Hudson, "Ugly Betty," and Mary J. Blige. But there were also some pleasant surprises, like The Pursuit of Happyness winning Best Picture, Prince being named Best Male Artist, and Spike Lee being recognized for his excellent Katrina documentary on HBO. The Triumphant Return of Prince

When I first heard that Prince was playing the Super Bowl Halftime Show, I wasn't sure what to expect. After all, we haven't heard from Prince in a while, so it was equally possible that he would totally rule or just come off as a washed-up former rock star.

What we got was arguably the best Halftime Show in years: Not only did Prince actually seem to be having a great time, but he reminded us of the awesome talent that only a man comfortable in a sea-foam green suit can emanate. His voice sounded stellar, and he pulled out all the stops on the guitar. In case you missed it, here are the highlights from the show:

Prince managing to look cool while wearing a little kerchief to protect him from the rain.
A rockin' cover of "Proud Mary" with the glow-in-the-dark FAMU marching band.
The back-lit silhouette of the artist playing a ridiculous Prince-symbol-shaped guitar in front of a fluttering flap of fabric.
Plenty of improvisational outbursts, including air kisses and lines like: "Somebody take my picture/ with all this rain in sight!"
A "Purple Rain" guitar solo in the pouring rain.

Movie Preview: Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia

I've been waiting on a trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for what feels like forever (more specifically, ever since those first photos of Jake all buff and shirtless).

The preview starts off strong, immediately taking us on an adventure quest that doesn't make any attempt to hide its video game origins. The effects are amazing, though I couldn't help snickering the first time Gyllenhaal speaks in a British accent. The good news is that it looks like the movie has some campy elements and a sense of humor along with all that in-your-face flair. We'll have to wait until Memorial Day 2010 for more, but to see the trailer, just read more.

Isla Fisher Lands Two New Movie Roles!

Isla Fisher's career has yet to live up to my expectations. I loved her in Wedding Crashers - who else can hold their own against Vince Vaughn the way she did? - but then Definitely, Maybe and Confessions of a Shopaholic weren't the launch into leading lady status that I'd hoped they'd be. Earlier this year, we heard that she was working on a film script with Amy Poehler, but we still haven't seen her on the big screen in months. Too long if you ask me.

But wait! This week's casting news reveals that Fisher has two new films in the works at Universal. First up is Life Coach, about a woman who consults - wait for it - a life coach. The second project is a rom-com based on a French script titled, Un Jour Mes Princes Viendront or in English, One Day My Princes Will Come.

With so few details at this point, it's hard to say whether either film will prove to be Fisher's big breakthrough, but I really want to see her career take off as the A-list funny lady I know she can be. I'm keeping my fingers crossed - how about you? Are you excited to see Isla Fisher get more work?

Twilight Leads the People's Choice Awards Nominations

The 36th annual People's Choice Awards nominees are here, and last year's Twilight is leading the charge! American Idol's Kris Allen was among the announcers this morning for the nominees, which also include lots of nods for The Proposal - but of course, everyone's favorite bloodsucking love story landed in many categories, including favorite on-screen movie team.

Why didn't they look to 2009's New Moon? Because last year's nominations debuted before the first movie in the Twilight saga.
