Snap Judgment: The Emmy Comedy Nominations

Yesterday, I told you my thoughts on the drama nominations for the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards. Today, I'm taking on the comedies. As I scrolled through the list of comedy nominations, one major thing stood out to me: I think the Emmy voters got it right more often for the funny shows than for the serious ones. Here's my take:

I didn't get my whole wish of recognition for Pam and Jim - but voters delivered half of it with a nomination for Jenna Fischer, my favorite lovelorn secretary. As I said before, Fischer straddles the line between comedy and drama perfectly, and anyone who watched that "Beach Games" speech - not to mention her final interview in the final scene of the season finale - would be silly not to choose her. I'm also thrilled about Rainn Wilson's nomination, and I only wish we could hear what Dwight Schrute would have to say about it.
Speaking of lovelorn secretaries (or, in this case, assistants), I'm glad to see America Ferrera nominated for "Ugly Betty" - even though, after her flurry of wins earlier this year, her nomination was basically a non-event. A couple of other "Betty" nominations I love: Vanessa Williams nominated in the supporting comedy actress category, and the hysterical Judith Light in the guest actress group.

More musings, so

On the other hand ... "Two and a Half Men." Yawn. It's not that I hate the show, it's that I can't muster up the energy to care about it. Put it in the best comedy series category if you must, but I think the six other nominations it racked up were a bit excessive. Glad to see Neil Patrick Harris steal a little recognition for "How I Met Your Mother" with his nomination in the supporting actor category.
Speaking of actors, I'm tiring of Tony Shalhoub getting nominated for "Monk." I think the man's a genius, but he has a death grip on that nomination, and I would have preferred the voters recognizing someone new. (Zach Braff, perhaps?) I'm glad Ricky Gervais slid in for "Extras," and I'm always happy to see my man Alec do well, though I'm surprised he's in the lead actor category and not supporting.
I had hoped for a writing nomination for Tina Fey and "30 Rock," but I never dreamed she'd get an acting nod! Her Liz Lemon is a beacon of hope for geeky, smart, socially awkward girls everywhere. I've been most interested lately in Tina as a writer, but it's great to see her on-screen talents get some well-deserved praise.
That best actress in a comedy series category is tricksy, however. I adore Mary Louise Parker in "Weeds" and Felicity Huffman in "Desperate Housewives," and yet perhaps what I love most about their performances is how movingly they handle the dramatic moments in their respective series. Then again, maybe those moments wouldn't be so poignant if the women were not so successful at the comedy stuff to begin with. It's a complex issue.

Announcing the Primetime Emmy Nominees!

Hollywood was up bright and early this morning for the announcement of the nominees for the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards. The made for TV movie "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" led the pack with 17 nominations while "The Sopranos" pulled in 15 nominations including Best Dramatic Series. The Emmys will air on September 16.

Last week I gave you my Top 10 Wishes for the Emmy Awards and a bunch of my dreams came true, including acting nominations for "How I Met Your Mother," "Lost" (not just Matthew Fox or Evangeline Lilly), and the women of "Brothers & Sisters." Plus, no series nod for "24." I'm bummed about "Friday Night Lights" being shut out of the major categories, but at least the show got a little recognition. Top Chef, No Reservations Among 2011 Emmy Nominations

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced its 2011 nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards this morning, and, as usual, a number of food programs were included.

On the exhaustive list of Emmy nominees were Top Chef for Outstanding Reality Competition (among other nominations); and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations for Outstanding Nonfiction Series, with a number of additional nods for the series's post-earthquake Haiti episode.

Top Chef and No Reservations were in good company: McDonald's, also a nominee, has been acknowledged in the Outstanding Commercial category. If you were in charge of the awards, which TV shows would you nominate?

Amy Poehler and Will Arnett Couple Up For the Golden Globes

Amy Poehler looked fantastic tonight on the arm of her husband, Will Arnett, arriving at the Golden Globe Awards in LA. She's once again nominated for best actress in a TV comedy for her role in Parks and Recreation. Amy's going up against her close friend and former SNL costar Tina Fey, as well as New Girl's Zooey Deschanel. Shirtless Kevin Bacon Cuts Loose With Tattooed Kyra

Shirtless Kevin Bacon kicked back on the beach in Hawaii yesterday with his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, and their kids, Sosie and Travis. The couple vacationed on the island of Kauai and enjoyed the afternoon lounging under the sun and swimming in the Pacific Ocean. Wearing a mix-and-match bikini, Kyra showed off her many tattoos, with the largest design visible on her lower back.

Kyra and Kevin are expected back in LA later this month for the SAG Awards. She's nominated in the best actress category for her starring role in The Closer - check out the entire list of SAG nominees. Kyra took home a win in the same category at last year's Primetime Emmy ceremony, but we'll just have to wait and see if she adds another statue to her collection. Mad Men and Mildred Pierce Lead the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards Nominations

Joshua Jackson and Melissa McCarthy rose early this morning to announce the 2011 Emmy nominations! Some perennial favorites made the cut, including Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey with respective nods in the outstanding lead actor and actress in a comedy series, as well as Jon Hamm of Mad Men as lead actor in a drama series and Julianna Margulies in The Good Wife. All in all, it was another great year for Mad Men with props in 19 categories. HBO also got lots of love with attention lavished on Mildred Pierce, including a nom for leading lady Kate Winslet, Boardwalk Empire, and newcomer Game of Thrones. The 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards are coming to a TV near you this Sunday. In addition to rooting for our favorite shows and weighing in on the fashion choices in our finest Sunday sweats, we'll be keeping our eyes out for adorable couples walking the red carpet. Nominated hottie Jon Hamm will likely have his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt, on his arm, and we hope Melissa McCarthy, nominated for Mike and Molly, brings along her Bridesmaid's air-marshal costar and real-life husband, Ben Falcone. To hold you over until then, let's take a look at classic couples, some still together and some not, who've walked the Emmys red carpet over the years.

Jim Parsons Reveals Both He and His Mom Thought Steve Carell Would Win the Emmy

Jim Parsons made it a repeat at the Primetime Emmys this evening, taking home his second straight statue for lead actor in a comedy. He stepped back to the press room to talk about being surprised by the win, since even his mother told him that Steve Carell had it in the bag this year. The The Big Bang Theory actor also revealed what it was like getting the award presented to him by Charlie Sheen. Here are highlights:

Did you know Charlie Sheen was going to be presenting? My first glimpse of Charlie was when they showed him right before the commercial when he was putting on his makeup. Then I started putting two and two together.

What are the statistical odds of you winning twice in a row? Apparently so bad that my mother didn't think I was going to. She told me it was going to be somebody else this year. Bless her heart. I'm very happy, but I'm a little flabbergasted, to be honest. Not that I expected anything ever, but I do manage to feel more shocked this year. Last year felt like more of a possibility for whatever reason, maybe because I was naive. But this year I felt pretty certain that I didn't have to worry about getting up there and I'm very grateful that I did.

Since you won last year, was the pressure off this time? Are you able to enjoy yourself more? Well, I did enjoy this year leading up to it this year more than last year, maybe because of last year having won. This year the whole show was nominated and Johnny was nominated - there's just so many more people involved in the process than there were last year. It felt like, even though everybody had to do all the things leading up to it, it felt like they were oddly taking away tasks from me. I didn't have to support a bunch of stuff - he'll do this, she'll be there. It was much more of a party atmosphere leading up to it this year.

What did Charlie Sheen say to you backstage? He just congratulated me and said "that's awesome." It was that sweet and that banal, I'm afraid.

Did you think it was Steve Carell's year to win? I did. That was what my mother had said along with other prognosticators. I just felt it would have been very richly deserved. He's just done such a wonderful job on that show for such a long time period. I really thought it would be anybody but me, and that Steve had a better chance.

January Jones Keeps Up Her Daily Routine While Mad Men Preps For Production

January Jones and her faithful pup and took a stroll through their Los Feliz neighborhood yesterday. She left the house in an oversized t-shirt, though lately January's been showing off her baby bump in body hugging sportswear. The Summer's brought about new and exciting things for January like the success of X-Men: First Class, her star studded Malibu baby shower thrown by Christina Hendricks, and most recently Mad Men's 19 Primetime Emmy nominations. If that wasn't enough, January has even more to look forward to in the upcoming months. Mad Men starts filming the fifth season August 8 and it's likely the entire cast will be on hand September 18 for the Emmy telecast. January, however, might miss out on this year's award show fun as she's quickly approaching her due date.

Emmy Hopes and Dreams For This Year's Nominations

With award staples like Breaking Bad, Lost, and Monk out of the running this year, I'm expecting to see some big surprises.
