HBO Delivers Prequels to The Wire

In preparation for ending The Wire this winter, HBO is telling us more about how the show began. A series of prequels showing the characters earlier in life have hit the Internet, and they'll also be available On Demand starting Dec. 15.

Like the Big Love back stories from earlier this year, these prequels don't reveal anything about specific plot lines. Instead, they're just little glimpses into how the characters came to be who they are. One of the three shows Prop Joe as a kid practicing his political skills in the schoolyard; another shows Bunk and McNulty getting hammered together during McNulty's first day in homicide. But my favorite is the one with young Omar, a chilling clip that combines a surprising amount of compassion with his already well-honed gangster side.

On the Today show this morning, Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell shared details on her new SATC prequel, Summer and the City, which came out yesterday. The YA novel begins where The Carrie Diaries left off, the end of Carrie's senior year of high school and the beginning of her new life in NYC. Carrie has just met the first friend from the infamous fab four, Samantha Jones, and she gives Carrie some advice that will make her the icon we all know and love. Sarah Jessica Parker Shows Tabitha and Loretta the City Ropes

Sarah Jessica Parker kept an eye on Tabitha and Loretta during an afternoon out in NYC yesterday. The three girls left a preschool and headed back to the family's apartment. It seems all the Broderick children have classes to attend now, and big brother James Wilkie is currently in the middle of his own academic year. SJP is taking a short hiatus from the big screen, but one of her iconic characters is definitely heading to the small. The CW ordered a pilot for The Carrie Diaries, a series that will be a prequel to the Sex and the City franchise SJP popularized on HBO. There's no word yet on which lucky young actress will get to play the younger version of Sarah Jessica's Carrie Bradshaw.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in this film as a 27-year-old man who finds himself diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. As he struggles with his mortality, his best friend (Seth Rogen) helps him to face the reality of his situation, which is where many of the film's laughs come from. With a powerful performance by Gordon-Levitt, the movie is a huge success, especially considering that it manages to find so much humor in a subject that's rarely portrayed as funny. DVD extras include deleted scenes, featurettes and a commentary track with Rogen and director Jonathan Levine.

Real Steel

Hugh Jackman plays a dad and former boxer in this futuristic action flick about boxing robots. When his estranged son shows up and wants to help assemble a robot to fight in the ring, father and son bond. While there are some exciting sequences, the family-friendly flick is also pretty predictable and cheesy. Extras on the DVD include a blooper real and two featurettes.

Rewind: 5 Actresses Who Could Play Young Lara Croft

News that a Lara Croft prequel surfaced again, and since Angelina Jolie won't be a part of it, I came up with five young actresses who could fill her shoes.
We had a peek at TV's future with our first look at True Blood's next season and lots of pilot news - see if you can pick out the real pilots from the fake ones in my quiz!
Charlie Sheen continued to make news when he was fired from Two and a Half Men. I asked you who you thought would be a good replacement for him on the show, and you guys responded with some great suggestions, including Rob Lowe.

Watch the Doctor Who Christmas Episode Prequel

The traditional Doctor Who Christmas episode is set to air Christmas Day, Dec. 25, at 9 p.m./8 p.m. Central on BBC America. As the episode's name - "The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe" - suggests, it has a plot reminiscent of the C.S. Lewis novel, with the Doctor leading a family away from their normal lives and on a Winter adventure.

The BBC released a tense prequel to the special episode, showing a desperate Doctor calling on the help of an old friend. Check out the short below and let us know if you'll tune in on Christmas to watch the return of Doctor Who.

Michael Fassbender Gets Into Fight Mode For His Next Role

It's been a great year for the super hot Michael Fassbender, and 2012 is shaping up to be equally awesome. His next film to hit theaters is Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, which is out on January 20. Michael is one of the male leads, along with Channing Tatum and Ewan McGregor, in the picture about a rogue black ops soldier. Michael's also front and center in the new Prometheus trailer, which sees him and Charlize Theron teaming up for Ridley Scott's Alien prequel planned for a June release. Prometheus Trailer: Charlize Theron Gets Mixed Up in Some Alien Business

Whether or not Ridley Scott's Prometheus is an official prequel to the Alien films, the teaser trailer does a great job at evoking the eerie vibe of the franchise. Presented as an origin story before the first Alien takes place, Prometheus follows a group led by Charlize Theron to another planet in an attempt to discover the genesis of the human race. From the foreboding music and tagline ("The Search For Our Beginning Could Lead to Our End"), we know that they find something far more dangerous and horrifying - though you don't really get a glimpse of what's lurking in the galactic darkness.

Aside from Theron, the movie boasts a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, and Patrick Wilson, but don't look for any of them in this teaser - you only get brief flashes of anyone set against the creepy space backdrop. Still, it's an interesting first taste of the thriller, so watch it after the jump.
