Rest in Peace, Charlton Heston

You know, though it goes against reason, I somehow thought Charlton Heston would outlive us all. Sadly, the Oscar winner died on Saturday at the age of 84.

Well-known for his award-winning turn in the 1959 epic tale Ben Hur and his role as Moses in The Ten Commandments, Heston was a part of many other great Hollywood films as well, particularly films of historical - and cinematic - significance. Some of these include Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man, Soylent Green, El Cid, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and Julius Caesar.

Heston was also increasingly active politically in his later years and was elected president of the National Rifle Association in 1998. Variety reminds us that he "was famously quoted as saying the only way his gun would be taken away 'is from my cold, dead hands.'" A younger generation might be most familiar with Heston as the aging actor who became incensed by an interview Michael Moore conducted with him in which they discussed America's issues with gun control in Bowling for Columbine.

Heston may not have outlived all of us, but his legacy as an actor who could epitomize, as Variety puts it, "the righteous, virile man" will live on.

Get Your First Look at James Franco in Rise of the Planet of the Apes

We saw some behind-the-scenes footage of Rise of the Planet of the Apes yesterday, but today brings the full trailer in all its glory. In the next brand-new chapter of the franchise, James Franco stars as Will, a scientist who's on the verge of changing the world by inventing "the cure": a drug that can cause the brain to repair itself. But, as his girlfriend (Freida Pinto) ominously points out, "some things aren't meant to be changed." When the drug is tested on an ape named Caesar (Andy Serkis), Will and his colleagues quickly learn they're dealing with more than just a cure for Alzheimer's. Caesar begins to display some seriously human-like qualities and starts a revolution with his fellow apes.

I wasn't expecting much from this film, but I have to admit the preview gave me goosebumps. The franchise is definitely getting a much-needed boost from modern technology (and it certainly doesn't hurt that the special effects are done by the same team that worked on Avatar). As with all of Planet of the Apes films, it raises the question of animal intelligence and cruelty while still packing in action sequences. The first trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes soothed much of my concerns for Peter Jackson's prequel, which stars James Franco as a scientist testing a new brain treatment for humans on chimps. Now there's a longer trailer with more of the story, and happily, more Franco. We see more of the actor's involvement with his animal subject Caesar, whom we get to meet as a baby chimp (CGI can be adorable!). There's also more conflict - both with Franco's character's reservations about the increasingly intelligent Caesar and the disastrous results of the apes' prison break. James Franco hugged his costar Freida Pinto as he arrived at last night's LA premiere of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. James flew back to California from Detroit, where he's currently shooting Oz: The Great and Powerful, for the debut of the science-fiction film. The actor also brought a date to the event and left with his arm around the leggy redhead after completing his red-carpet duties. James announced his split from Ahna O'Reilly, his girlfriend of five years, in a new interview with Playboy. Freida, his onscreen leading lady, looked stunning in an electric green Juan Carlos Obando gown and Brian Atwood pumps. She was without her longtime boyfriend, Dev Patel, on the red carpet, but Tom Felton had two of his loved ones on hand to support his latest film - his girlfriend, Jade Gordon, and his Harry Potter costar Rupert Grint. Box Office: Rise of the Planet of the Apes Continues to Reign

Moviegoers continued to go ape over Rise of the Planet of the Apes last weekend. The seventh film in the franchise took the number one spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row, bringing in $27.5 million. Rise of the Planet of the Apes triumphed over four new releases, including The Help, which helped itself to a second place spot with $25.5 million. Final Destination 5 came in third with $18.4 million, while The Smurfs dropped to fourth place with $13.5 million. On its debut weekend, 30 Minutes or Less brought in $13 million, while Glee: The 3D Concert Movie flopped in its opening weekend with $5.7 million.

Box Office: Planet of the Apes Rises to the Top

Rise of the Planet of the Apes breathed new life into the franchise as the film drew in $54 million in its opening weekend and taking first place at the box office. The Smurfs took a distant second with $21 million, followed by Cowboys & Aliens, which earned $15.7 million in its sophomore weekend. The Change-Up saw a disappointing debut of $13.5 million, which isn't a particularly strong showing compared to other comedies that bowed this Summer. Captain America: The First Avenger added $13 million to its box office run, which put it in fifth.
