300 Leads MTV Movie Awards Nominations

Last week we found out that Sarah Silverman will host the MTV Movie Awards, and now we know who will be vying for the coveted Golden Popcorn. 300 is leading the way with five nominations including Best Picture, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with four and Blades of Glory, The Devil Wears Prada and Borat with three each.

Greatest potential for a catfight: the Best Performance category, which sees Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson going head-to-head for their Dreamgirls roles. Also, did I totally call Columbus Short's nomination for Best Breakout Star after Stomp the Yard, or what?

Oscar Nominee: Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest for Art Direction

Every week up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories. In this final week, I'll be looking at the nominees for best art direction, which encompasses the entire look and feel of a film from the scenery to the lighting. Yesterday, we saw a gallery from The Good Shepherd, and today's featured movie is one I never expected to see written in a sentence alongside "Oscar": Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

The sequel to the original theme-park ride-based movie, Dead Man's Chest is nothing if not eye candy, and I'm not just talking about Johnny Depp. In its well-conceptualized fantasy world, you get everything from regal, tall-masted ships to creepy sea monsters and nautical costumes, all of which help give the special-effects-heavy movie a unified look and feel. Box Office: Pirates of the Caribbean Takes the Treasure Chest

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides didn't just take the top spot at the box office this weekend, but its $90.1 million debut marks the biggest opening weekend of 2011. It's not all cheers though; the fourth Pirates installment opened to smaller opening weekends than Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.

Right behind Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, Bridesmaids stayed strong in second with $21 million, while former champ Thor slipped to third and took in $15.5 million. Fast Five earned $10.6 million for fourth place, while Rio clung to the top five with $4.6 million.

Even Johnny Depp Didn't Understand the Most Recent Pirates Movies

Johnny Depp donned his full Jack Sparrow gear to cover this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly. He is, of course, promoting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ahead of the film's release later this month. Fans of the franchise were a bit disenchanted with the most recent Pirates films, and Depp admits that Dead Man's Chest and At World's End were convoluted and confusing - but he also explains why the newest sequel will be different (and much easier to digest):

On why Pirates 2 and 3 didn't do as well as the original: "It was plot-driven and complicated. I remember talking to [Gore Verbinski, director of the first three films] at certain points during production of 2 or 3 and saying, 'I don’t really know what this means.' He said, 'Neither do I, but let’s just shoot it.' This guy is this guy’s dad, and this guy was in love with this broad. It was like, 'What?'"
On having more say in the script this time around: "With this one, in terms of story, my involvement was a little more just because I felt if we were going to do a 4, that more than anything we owed the audience a fresh start, without all the complicated mathematics of 1 colliding with 2 and 2 colliding with 3. I felt it was very important to eliminate as many complications as possible."
On his mission for the fourth film: "Let’s give them something character-driven. Something fun and irreverent. Hoops of fire and whatnot. New blood, as it were."
