What to Download: New Music Today

I already shared some great new DVD offerings, and while it's slimmer pickings for music (no doubt due to the holidays), there are two releases that I'm particularly psyched about. Check them out! (Plus, don't forget that if you're loving a new album, you can sound off about it in the Music Review Group. I may even feature your writeup on the site!)

All Hail, Queen Mary: Mary J. Blige may have experienced a few Growing Pains, but with her ninth release, she shows us a woman who has come out on the other side of heartbreak and is even more powerful for it. Stronger With Each Tear has a breezy confidence to it that speaks to Blige's own feelings about herself at this stage in her life. Chances are you've heard "The One" featuring Drake in those AT&T ads, but I love it for its sort of cocky swagger, a persona which also pops up on the track "I Feel Good." For a more pensive, peaceful Blige, listen to the stripped down "Color" from the movie Precious. It's a beautiful, bluesy track.

Pink Floyd Redo: The Flaming Lips take on an ambitious project (and a similarly ambitious title) in The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs With Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing Dark Side of the Moon, where the band tackles the infamous Pink Floyd album through a series of covers (exclusively available only on iTunes this week). The Lips add their own modern psychedelic flavor to the old-school tracks with lots of experimental sounds, e.g. on "Money," they distort their own voices to give the song a robotic feel. Diehard Floyd followers will probably scoff at such tinkering with the classics, but the result feels like a fresh update - even though, like most remakes, it's difficult to do a one better than the original.

Defend This Album: Pink Floyd's The Wall

We all love things that others love to hate, whether it's a Counting Crows CD you can't get rid of or your "Degrassi Junior High" boxed set. Now I'm giving you a chance to explain yourselves in a new feature called Defend This.

This week, I'm calling all you Pink Floyd lovers out there to defend the band's 1979 double-album The Wall. I, for one, have spent many hours arguing the merits of this album - from the school-kid choirs to the bizarre WWII imagery and even Roger Waters' self-indulgent songwriting.

But while it's cool to like Piper at the Gates of Dawn or "Wish You Were Here," it takes a pretty devoted fan to stare down the mobs of music snobs who make fun of The Wall. So, if you're feeling up to it ... on your marks, get set, defend!

Miley and Liam Take a Romantic Stroll With Their Best Friend

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth teamed up in LA yesterday for a walk around their neighborhood. The loved-up couple held hands and were joined by her miniature Husky, Floyd, though their other pups, Ziggy and Lila, skipped the cardio. Miley's serious about staying fit, and she's been spotted taking Winsor Pilates classes on a regular basis. She's even trying out a new brand of footwear to kick up her workouts - Miley stepped out wearing a pink and black pair of Skechers Shape-Ups.

It's likely Liam will stick with a strict fitness regime as well in the coming months, as Catching Fire, the second film in the Hunger Games trilogy, is expected to begin production this Fall. So far, the first film has grossed more than $368 million worldwide, and it's still the reigning box office champ.

It looks like we aren't the only ones inspired by dogs! Whether they're singing lead vocals or the title's inspiration, these songs about dogs have left their mark on music. The next time you're going to make a Summer playlist, keep your furry friends in mind with these tunes.

1. Led Zeppelin - "Black Dog"
The song's title is a reference to a nameless black Labrador Retriever that wandered around the studios during recording.

2. Cat Stevens - "I Love My Dog"
A little ironic how much a man named Cat loves his dog?

The track is named after the dog who provided howling vocals in their 1972 film Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. Madmoiselle Nobs stood in for the dog "Seamus" who originally provided howling accompaniment on the album version of the tune.

4. Aerosmith - "Walking the Dog"
Aerosmith covered this song by Rufus Thomas for their first very album in 1973.

5. George Clinton - "Atomic Dog"
This 1982 video is amazing. There is some serious doggy dancing animation going on. Snoop Dogg, Biz Markie, and 2Pac have all sampled the song's hook.

Ashley Greene Returns to LA in Her Shortest of Shorts

Ashley Greene showed off her well-toned legs yesterday as she left LAX in short shorts and a tummy-baring Pink Floyd tee. She's back in LA following a tour of the East Coast that began in NYC at a viewing of Salvatore Ferragamo's resort collection and wrapped up with a family-filled Fourth of July celebration in her hometown of Jacksonville, FL. She's not the only Twilight star returning to the West Coast, since Kristen Stewart arrived solo at LAX last night following her trip to see Robert Pattinson on set in Canada. Ashley's got a busy schedule ahead of her this Fall with at least two films, Breaking Dawn Part I and LOL, hitting the big screen. Hopefully she'll be able to find a few hours this weekend to check out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, in which her Apparition costar Tom Felton makes his final appearance as Draco Malfoy.
