House Rundown: Episode 18, "Here Kitty"

This week's episode of House finds the team chasing around a "death cat," a little gray kitty named Debbie who's come to some amount of fame (at least local TV fame) by predicting deaths of nursing home patients. Meanwhile, Taub thinks he's found a way out of some financial and personal misery, but that ends up being a trickier proposition than it looks. To chat about it, just

I suppose if this episode had a theme, it would be "believing in stuff" - and, as usual, House seems to come out ahead. His adherence to facts and science gets him not just an explanation for the death cat but also keeps him from falling prey to a con artist who wants to take all his money and run (ahem, Taub). There were some funny moments, and it's always nice to see Judy Greer get a job, but episodes like this where House's beliefs aren't really challenged always turn out to be a little on the dull side for me.

I would have liked it better if the writers had really gone full-force into showing everyone's superstitions. Instead, we just got poor Kutner edging his way around the ladder as he leaves the room and tossing salt over his shoulder. I'm not surprised he ends up becoming the victim of a particularly mean-spirited House prank ("do you like cranberry juice?"), though he seems to have gotten some revenge at the end with the cat pee - or, perhaps, "cat pee" - on House's chair. The show draws a little parallel between the patient being superstitious because her son died and Kutner being superstitious because his parents died, but it didn't have a ton of oomph for me.

Even though it's a tangent, I actually enjoyed Taub's storyline on its own. He's apparently going through some tough financial times - he's not making high-powered plastic surgeon money anymore, and he lost a bunch of money in the stock market - so when a guy he maybe kinda remembers from high school shows up at the hospital and thanks him for treating a minor problem with cigars and expensive scotch, he sees a chance at a different life. But his golden parachute turns out to be a major scam, and Taub's only saving grace is that he didn't turn over his money. So it's back to the team - with a big box of donuts, just as House predicted - to a job he never really liked in the first place.

The death cat story itself seems pretty lightweight, but it has its moments, including House's James Bond reference and the rather evil decision to test the cat's death-predicting powers in the coma ward. While House hates the whole idea of cat as omen, he doesn't seem to mind the cat itself, considering he rustled up a litter box and some genetically modified mice for it.

A couple of other thoughts:

I did like the patient's argument for why she believes in things: "If there's no greater purpose in the world, that's not a world I want to live in."

Love how House so accurately predicts that if Taub doesn't actually have another job lined up, he won't follow through with quitting.

House, when the cat is making particularly nasty-sounding noises in the elevator: "Stop it, Dr. Wilson! It's just not cute anymore!"

Also, House to Cuddy when Cuddy suggests the hospital will end up getting sued for House's work on this case: "I wish there was a lawsuit cat that would warn you."

What did you all think? And was the heavy emphasis on Kutner and Taub to make up for all the Foreman/Thirteen earlier in the season?

House Rundown: Episode Three, "Adverse Events"

This week's episode of House hit the trifecta of major show themes: lying, spying, and drugs. It also made me laugh out loud for the better part of an hour, and now I'm pretty sure "Adverse Effects" is my favorite House episode of the season. Even Lucas Douglas, PI, is growing on me, which is a huge surprise. Did anyone else love this episode? Or do you all think I'm crazy? To talk about it, just

Often, when House tries to do episodes where the patients' and the doctors' lives intertwine, it can end up feeling heavy-handed, like Grey's Anatomy at its worst. I liked how "Adverse Effects" handles things, though, mostly because the events tie so closely into the show's themes: Do you feel better knowing the truth? Is there such a thing as "the truth" to know? Are the only good doctors miserable?

But here's what I really loved about "Adverse Effects": It's funny. I mean, the Kutner/Taub/Thirteen exchange about Kutner's crawling is priceless ("I didn't do it to get the babes." "No, that would cheapen the purity of your achievement.") - and seriously, Kutner's in the Guinness Book for crawling? Kutner and Taub also have a snappy bit about Taub's wife hypothetically "doing the doorman" (Taub: "We don't have a doorman"), we see House as a cheerleader, and Chase punctuates the removal of a nasty medical marvel with the line "And that is why I won't let Cameron get a cat." I laughed harder at this episode than I have at any comedy I've watched this week.

The humor helped take the edge off what could have been a heavy episode, with House digging into everyone's personal lives and forcing people (well, forcing Taub) to deal with truths they otherwise would have kept hidden - a nice parallel with the patient, who literally nearly killed himself trying to keep secrets from his girlfriend. This episode has some bits that really speak to what House is all about - Lucas and House's exchange about the truth ("There is only one truth." "Maybe true for you.") and House's assertion that miserable people save more lives, to name just two. Some other thoughts:

Aw, Cuddy and Lucas, sitting in a - um, diner - and not quite k-i-s-s-i-n-g but not too far from it, either. Is Cuddy just attracted to people who drive her crazy, manipulate her, and go through her personal belongings?

So much was made about Taub's wife's secret bank account that I was expecting a twist. Instead, we got one car and zero lies on the wife's part. I think the storyline would have had more zip if I hadn't nearly forgotten that Taub had an unconfessed affair.

Speaking of which, I bet that reference to the fictional "Jefferson Mutual" bank was funnier a few months ago.

Breckin Meyer looks old.

House played lacrosse and was a cheerleader? I know I'm supposed to be most shocked at the cheerleader revelation, but I didn't figure lacrosse would be his sport, either.

Yet another episode with only the briefest glimpse of Chase and no Cameron. I hope they're enjoying what must amount to a paid vacation.

I always love the irony of House saying things like "People hate people who mess with other people."

So: How are you feeling about Lucas now? Wasn't the jam session at the end kind of awesome? And can you picture House doing spirit fingers and basket tosses?

House Rundown: Episode 13, "No More Mr. Nice Guy"

Monday's episode of House had everything I could have hoped for in the show's return - and I'm not exaggerating when I say everything. Cameron, Chase, and Foreman were all there - but so was the new team. There were scenes with Wilson and scenes with Cuddy - and a scene with the two of them together. They even threw in a little Hugh Laurie tooling away on the piano. Doesn't it just figure that the episode about a too-happy guy would make me smile for almost an hour straight?

The team's treatment of the happiest man alive ("Is he Canadian?") led them on a quest to figure out why House is the crankiest man alive. Meanwhile, House set about rekindling his bromance with Wilson by proposing joint custody with Amber. Could House survive seeing his best dude on Wednesday nights and every other weekend? To find out, just

How great was it that this episode started with a strike? That's where we met the patient of the week, the overly happy man. In a normal hospital, I'm sure that guy would have been treated and released, but to House, cheerfulness is the sign of a major defect. I loved that instead of a word at the top of House's whiteboard of doom, there was just a cartoonish smiley face.

Kutner, meanwhile, had his own hypothesis: If being overly happy is the sign of a medical problem, then being overly cranky must be a symptom of a disease, too. I don't buy that, but it does fit in with the sort of logic Kutner has been spouting since the first day he arrived. As soon as Kutner "found" a vial of House's blood, though, I knew something was up: House doesn't leave things behind accidentally. (Remember the false scans that made the whole team think he was dying?) Nonetheless, the faux syphilis diagnosis unearthed an age-old House question: Did House and Cameron sleep together?

Naturally, House didn't have syphilis - but he did have issues with Amber continuing to date Wilson. I loved every scene with the three of them together, and all the joint custody references ("you have mommy's phone number, right?") were priceless. True to form, it wasn't enough for House just to spend time with Wilson; he also had to ruin any chance of Amber getting laid. One question: Is Amber employed at PPH, or did Cuddy just make her change beds?

Some other thoughts:

Foreman's performance review subplot was relatively minor, but it led to an interesting point. House acknowledged that Foreman is someone the new team should fear - but he wants to force Foreman into the "good cop" role instead. Great image of the Foreman statue with a "Kick Me" sign on the back.

"Thirty-one." "Thirty-one?" "I thought either way was good for you."

There wasn't a lot of Taub in this episode, but the scene where he played his little trick to get $5 from Kutner was pretty great.

Speaking of Kutner, interesting that his performance review noted that sometimes he gets too involved. Really? I would have gone with "sometimes you set patients on fire."

"A disturbingly large number of your comments are racist or sexist." "That top makes you look like an Afghani prostitute . . . would be an example of that."

It's always interesting when someone besides House has an epiphany. Does this mean Kutner is going to turn out to be a good doctor?

Anyone else squeal out loud at the sight of Chase bowling with House?

Your thoughts? How good was it to see everyone back? And seriously, do you think Cameron and House ever slept together?

TV Tonight: House

Over the past couple of weeks, we've seen incompetent bosses, self-absorbed medical residents, sex-crazed high schoolers, and even some devil's bounty hunters return to the small screen. But if there's one character whose return I've been anticipating most eagerly, it's the crankypants Dr. House. Tonight, House returns - now in its new Monday night slot - to deliver his standard dose of bitter sarcasm.

House went through a pretty radical transformation in the Fall, so just to make sure we're all on the same page, here's a quick rundown of what's going on. House's old team is no more; they're all still at PPH, but only Foreman is working directly with House. The new team consists of plastic surgeon Taub, bumbling fool Kutner, and mysterious Thirteen. The runner-up for making the team was Amber, aka Cutthroat B*tch, who managed to get the better of House anyway by dating Wilson. When we last left things, House was trying to figure out whether Amber was looking for romance, a job, or both.

And that's where things pick up tonight, with House and Amber each vying for a little bit of Wilson's time. The three of them have some of the best chemistry on the show right now, so I'm eager to see them all sharing the screen again. Meanwhile, the patient of the week is a guy House thinks is just too nice for his own good, which should be fun; after all, is there a personality trait House likes less than niceness? To check out a couple of clips from the episode, just

Do You Prefer House's Old Team or His New Team?

House doesn't return for another couple of weeks, but Chicago Tribune writer Maureen Ryan just posted part of an interesting Q&A with creator David Shore, focusing on the subject of whether Cameron and Chase will be getting more screen time in these next few episodes. The short answer: no. The long answer: They might be in the show a little more, but they won't be rejoining House's team. He said:

Cameron and Chase are certainly not on screen as much as they used to be, but the stuff they’re doing, I think, takes on a different weight and a greater weight. . . . I don’t want to change the fundamental nature of the show and there’s only so many pages for us to deal with [character stories].

I loved House's storyline in the Fall where he interviewed for new fellowship candidates, but I'm starting to wonder if the show is going to continue on with Taub, Kutner, and Thirteen acting exactly as Cameron, Chase, and Foreman once did. If that's the case, why shake up the show at all? So, that leads to my question for you: Do you prefer House's new team, or would you rather watch the old dynamic?

House Rundown: Episode 10, "It's a Wonderful Lie"

Merry Christmas, everybody! Any other holidays we should celebrate while we're at it? This week's House took us all the way back to late December for a Christmas-themed episode all about (what else?) deception and lies. Hey, I suppose I'd rather see Wilson wearing that ridiculous reindeer hat late than never see it at all. To chat about Tuesday's episode, just

This was House's first episode with his new team now that the competition's over. But the competition's never really over, is it? This week's secret Santa game, though, felt more like something House might have done with his old team than the ruthless tests we saw during the selection process. Nonetheless, it did freak out the team - first when they realized they'd have to buy gifts for House, later when they realized they all had to buy gifts for House and therefore would be judged against each other. I think House was curious to see what they thought he might want, but really, I think he's just a greedy jerk who wanted loot.

As for the team itself? I'm not getting a whole lot from them yet, and I'm still wondering how (if?) the show plans to integrate Cameron and Chase back in. Not to mention Foreman - he's technically in, and yet we hardly ever see him. And where's Cuddy? I'm glad the show blew up the old formula, but I eventually want all the pieces to settle, and right now it feels like there are three too many people on the show. I just worry that now that the contest is over, it's not clear what to do with these people; this felt a little like an old-school House episode, but with Taub, Kutner, and Thirteen instead of Foreman, Chase, and Cameron.

This week's patient was a mom (holla, Janel Moloney!) who became strangely and suddenly paralyzed and blind; House, of course, was sure she was lying about something. And she was: Her daughter, Jane, wasn't actually her biological daughter. That, though, ended up not having anything to do with her diagnosis, but House still seemed pleased with himself. I was pretty shocked when Jane told her mother she was going to die; that's pretty harsh coming from an 11-year-old, but it was the truth House had been after.

Some other thoughts:

House's clinic patient: prostitute, nativity scene participant, or both? My sense was that she was just playing Mary - it would give those comments about telling her mom what she doe the ironic edge that House loves so much.

There wasn't a ton of House-Wilson interaction in this episode, but nearly every line of it was a gem. I especially liked Wilson walking nowhere with House just to drive him crazy and this little exchange: "What happens when they find out?" "It's secret Santa." "What happens when they find out?"

Seriously, how much did Jennifer Morrison make just to show up and stand in the hotel lobby at the end? Jesse Spencer, at least, had to pretend to drill bone.

I love the shocked and disgusted looks on Thirteen's and Taub's faces when Kutner whipped out his secret Santa gift.

House has done a lot of gross things in his day, but squirting the tumor-milk in the poor girl's mouth was truly nasty.

Your thoughts? Is the new team working for you? Are you psyched for the South Pole?

House Rundown: Episode 9, "Games"

Every House episode is really just a series of games House plays - with Cuddy, with Foreman, with his patients' lives - but this week's episode took things one step further. For the final challenge before picking his new team, House set the final four candidates loose on an aging punk rocker with symptoms that were either drug abuse or something more. In the end, he did actually buckle down and choose a team, but of course I'm not going to reveal the names up here. For that you'll have to

This episode was all about being right - the risks you take (or don't), the consequences, the reasons it might be OK to be wrong sometimes. We've seen in other episodes how much Amber thrives on being right - you don't get the nickname Cutthroat B*tch for nothing - but this episode made it clear that she not only requires perfection of herself but also asks for it in others. She couldn't deal with the rock star who didn't care about things; she thought he was wasting his life, and for whatever reason, being anything less than 100 percent right would be a waste of hers. But that was her downfall: Striving to be right all the time is the enemy of what House does. His process requires numerous guesses and tests and trials, and he's always wrong at least once, but he uses those wrong answers to find the right one. Amber's mistakes, and her unwillingness to admit them and move on, got her cut from the team.

That leaves Taub, Kutner, and Thirteen as House's new staff. Their hiring - Thirteen's in particular - came from yet another of House's games with Cuddy. She recommended candidates to him because she thought he'd do the opposite; he hired two men, knowing she'd be angry there wasn't a woman in the mix. He ended up with three out of the final four - not the 3.5 he'd hoped for, but close enough. I wonder how they'll be able to work together now that they're not competing anymore.

Meanwhile, Wilson actually had a subplot! And it fit quite nicely into the overall theme of the episode, too: He told a patient he had six months to live, then learned three months later that the test results had been false and there was nothing wrong with the patient at all. It was pretty similar to a recent Grey's Anatomy story, right down to both patients wanting to sue the hospital for giving them their lives back, but this one worked better for me on the strength of the House/Wilson interplay. Their screaming match was a highlight for me: "Dying's easy. Living's hard." "That can't possibly be as poignant as it sounds."

Some other thoughts:

I loved the reminder that money's not a big deal to House, but threatening to move his parking space? That's serious stuff.

Chase pointed out a nice truth about the Foreman/House relationship: Foreman trying to stop the game is his role in the game.

House on how he knew Wilson was going to pay off his patient: "You usually keep your checkbook at home. It's your go-to excuse for why you can't lend me money."

Great description of Cuddy: "the face that launched a thousand long faces."

So, did the final episode play out the way you were expecting? What do you think will happen to Chase and Cameron now? And how upset are you that this was the final House till 2008?

TV Tonight: House and Bones

It's a big night on Fox tonight, as each of the network's dramas pulls out all the stops for the final Tuesday of sweeps. House puts the Survivor-style plot line to rest when Dr. House announces his hiring decision, and Bones takes romantic tension to a new level with a kiss between Bones and Booth.

That Bones kiss has been so heavily promoted at this point, I have to assume it's not a spoiler. The episode has a Christmas theme - the two find themselves investigating the death of Kristopher Kringle, a Santa impersonator - so naturally, there's mistletoe involved. Do you think this is a good move for the show, or would a romance between those two be icky?

House, meanwhile, finally chooses which job candidates will get his fellowships - or at least that's what we're told. Yes, there were rumors long ago about which doctors would win, but wouldn't it be great if that were all made up? Frankly, I wouldn't be shocked if he fired all the newbies and brought the old team back, though that would be a bit of a ripoff. If I could keep just one of them, it would be Kutner; sure, he may be inept, but Kal Penn makes me laugh.

To watch a preview for both shows, just

House Rundown: Episode 7, "Ugly"

Does anything change when a documentary crew starts following the action at PPH? That was the question this week on House. And the answer: not really. The documentary episode is a bit of a TV stereotype, and frankly, as a window into what the characters really feel, I preferred the Mirror Syndrome guy. But the film crew did prompt some great lines - "I became a doctor because of the movie Patch Adams" - and caught Cameron in one very awkward moment. It also apparently gave Taub the courage to stand up to House for the first time. For more about the episode, just

Whoa, where did Taub come from this week? After weeks of being generally agreeable, he came out swinging with the case of the boy with the facial deformity. Maybe it's because he's a plastic surgeon and considered himself an expert; maybe it's because the cameras were there and he saw a chance to shine. Either way, he pushed back on every single one of House's decisions, even pissing off Cuddy in the process. I'm glad we learned how Taub came to vie for a spot on House's team - though doesn't the revelation that he was fired for not keeping his pants on put an interesting spotlight on his interactions with Amber?

I thought the writers were setting up Taub to leave, but the real person to go was Terzi, after House realized she wasn't smart - just very, very hot. Now, are we really to believe that Terzi has some kind of overwhelming mind-freeze power over House (and other men - remember Wilson trying to see through her shirt)? More than, say, Thirteen or Amber or Cameron? House makes cracks about Cuddy's breasts all day and can still speak intelligently in front of her! I actually thought, briefly, that one of Terzi's idiotic ideas would end up being right; as soon as she suggested autoimmune, though, I knew she was a goner.

Speaking of attractive women: Cameron had one of the most revealing plots of the night. When the documentary crew asked her if House was as much of an ass to her as he'd been to his team all day, she responded that she "loved House." Which she quickly, awkwardly amended to say she loved "working with House." There have been inklings of something between Cameron and House for years, and maybe her feelings for him - whatever they may be - are the reason she can't totally remove herself from House's orbit.

Some other thoughts:

It was fun to watch everyone try to be their best selves for the camera: Chase talking in formal, grave language; Kutner putting on a tie; Amber wearing lipstick; House being even more ridiculous than normal ("I will see you again after I have saved his life. Have a warm bath waiting").

Wilson, after House said Terzi couldn't be dumb because she worked at the CIA: "The Bay of Pigs was a daring triumph."

The actual medical case didn't really grab me - there were almost too many twists - but I thought the actor playing the kid with the facial deformity was fantastic.

Taub finally has a nickname: "mini-stud." Does that mean Kutner's next?

The payoff with House and Cuddy watching the final cut of the documentary was great. "Suddenly, I don't feel like I can trust Michael Moore movies."

Your thoughts? Happy Michael Michele is out of the picture? Ready for House to hurry up and fire someone else already?
