Movie Preview: Adam

Ever since I heard about Adam, which premiered at Sundance this year, I've been dying to see a preview for it - and now it's finally here! This sweet-looking romance stars Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne (Damages) as two twentysomethings who live in the same apartment complex. They become interested in each other and might be on the path to love if not for one little thing: Adam (Dancy) suffers from Asperger's syndrome, which means he has trouble navigating dating and other social situations.

I was worried that this movie might be a little too sentimental, but the trailer is charming, with a few moments that made me laugh out loud nestled between the emotional scenes. The reviews out of Sundance were generally positive, with one critic describing it as "extremely touching and sweet."

The movie also stars Peter Gallagher, Amy Irving, and Mark Linn-Baker and will hit theaters July 29. To watch the trailer,

TV Tonight: Center Stage Sequel on Oxygen

I can't believe this almost slipped off my radar, but never fear, dear readers: I finally did remember that the sequel to Center Stage is airing on Oxygen tonight. And just because this is a made-for-TV movie (the first went to theaters) that will head to DVD in January doesn't mean they're skimping on the good stuff.

For example, Peter Gallagher is reprising his role as artistic director Jonathan Reeves, and accomplished ballet dancer Ethan Stiefel is back as Cooper Nielson. This time around, we'll watch a new generation of dancers tackle the world of New York ballet:

Kate, a talented, self-taught ballerina . . . leaves her Detroit home to audition for the prestigious American Ballet Academy in New York. Despite displaying superior abilities and impressing experienced teacher Cooper Nielsen (Stiefel), Kate is rejected by Artistic Director Jonathan Reeves (Gallagher) in favor of classical ballerina Suzanne. A prodigy from a wealthy family, Suzanne has been trained in classical ballet since the moment she could walk. Kate then meets hockey player-turned-dancer Tommy, who has been accepted to the Academy, but still needs help with his technique. As Kate and Tommy work together, their growing affection inspires a new determination and commitment to achieving their dreams.

Center Stage Sequel on the Way!

What a great hump day! First, Ryan and Rachel rekindle their love and now this: Popwrap is claiming that one of my favorite dance movies of all time will be getting a sequel. They write:

CS: Turn It Up gets a little urban on us this time as Kate Parker, a self-taught prodigy catches Jonathan's eye and makes it into the American Ballet Academy. Sadly things don't go as planned and she's booted from the school - only to meet Tommy, an ex-hockey player and unlikely new ABA student (obviously) who crushes on Kate and gets her a job at a hot NYC nightclub, The Foundry. Well, needless to say, sparks fly and I am sure there is an amazing dance-off to end all cinematic dance-offs.

I totally agree that the dance-off is a guarantee - and I look forward to it. The original Center Stage is hilariously earnest and cheesy, but when dance is involved I have a hard time saying no. Of the original cast only Peter Gallagher and Ethan Stiefel will return. The sequel will premiere on Oxygen in November (don't worry, I'll remind you) and then head straight to DVD (I'll probably remind you then too).

It may not be a masterpiece but it's totally the kind of mindless TV movie sequel I kinda can't resist. I dug up the final dance scene for the original Center Stage, so if you have about ten minutes you'd like to fill with wonderment, just

Stars Come Out to See Country Girl in the Big City

Some of our favorite actresses from the big screen got dressed up for the theater in NY last night at the opening of The Country Girl on Broadway. The show stars Morgan Freeman, Frances McDormand and Peter Gallagher, who were all out afterwards to celebrate their big night with the likes of Julia Roberts and Amy Adams. Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst both looked perfectly content to be flying solo without their new - one rumored, one real - men. While the play itself is getting mixed reviews, it's hard to believe that there will be any trouble selling tickets while such an all star cast is up on stage.

"The OC" Returns - on Cable

Until last week, I was only vaguely aware of Soapnet, but if you're a fan of "The OC," it might be time to get the obscure cable channel on your lineup. Starting tonight,
Soapnet is adding the recently canceled teen drama to its regular programming, which includes evening rebroadcasts of traditional soaps like "All My Children" and "Day of Our Lives," as well as reruns of "Melrose Place" and Beverly Hills 90210."

"The OC" kicks off tonight with the pilot, which airs at 6 p.m. Eastern/Pacific, and continues on subsequent Mondays. When I look at photos from the first episode, I can't believe how young everyone looks, so it will be fun to go back to the beginning. This evening also marks the Soapnet premiere of "One Tree Hill." Hilariously, the channel is marketing the show pairing as "pretty people, pretty messed up." Check the web site to see if the channel is available in your area.

"The OC" Recap: Episode 14, "The Shake Up"

In this week's episode of "The OC", Ryan worries that his relationship with Taylor is suddenly moving into "mach 5," and thankfully, that's precisely what the writers seem to be doing with the show. We begin as Taylor is discussing plans for her first-ever birthday party with Summer, and she confesses that the ideal present would be Ryan asking her to go to Berkeley with him. Oh, and an "I love you" wouldn't hurt either. Next we're treated to some very heavy-handed foreshadowing, so if you don't mind some spoilers,

read more Seeing an earthquake story in the LA Times, the girls point out that, no matter how many times the experts predict "the big one," it never happens. Subtle, right? Almost as subtle as Taylor's "hints" to Ryan that he should say "I love you." Her best moment is probably when she and Ryan are watching a movie, and she observes how tragic it is that the two characters can't express their love for one another. Ryan says the chances of it working are pretty slim: "She’s a beautiful woman. He’s a hunchback working in a bell tower." Kaitlin is annoyed at how much Frank is staying over, and Frank confronts her about it. The problem isn't that he went to prison, Kaitlin says, but that Frank is boring. Kaitlin then attempts to solve the problem by planting clown porn in Frank's duffel bag; Julie realizes what's going on and is, understandably, troubled that her 15-year-old managed to get her hands on clown porn. Meanwhile, Kirsten sees a darker side of Newport, and it's called prenatal yoga, where the bitchy young moms invite her to join the "six-pack pack." She asks Sandy: How can she raise a baby in such a shallow place? To renew her hope, he invites her out to dinner with a "normal" couple, Spitz and his wife. Bad idea, seeing as how the wife is about 20 years younger and unbelievably obnoxious, shouting across the restaurant at a nanny to shut that thing up. Turns out it's her nanny, and the "thing" is her kid. Lovely. Summer, meanwhile, is dragging Seth to an art opening sponsored by GEORGE. When Seth ridicules an experimental film, Summer challenges him to make his own, so he films an inflatable whale floating in a pool for six hours. Summer is not amused, but I thought it was pretty funny. In an attempt to redeem himself, he spends the rest of the episode filming documentary footage of Ryan, Summer, and the gang. Trying to loosen Ryan up, Taylor invites him over for dinner and wine. She gets sloshed instead and admits that she just wants to hear that he loves her. When she seems to pass out on the bed, Ryan asks: "Taylor, are you just pretending to be unconscious so I’ll tell you that I love you?" A drunken Taylor replies: "Maybe..." Eventually, he says he loves her back but then panics when he realizes Taylor is planning to go to Berkeley. Taylor decides she'll say "I love you" when she opens Ryan's romantic birthday gift, a bound book of French love poems. But when she opens the gift, she realizes Ryan has gift-wrapped a dictionary instead. I think the French call that "sabotage." Speaking of sabotage, Julie finds Kaitlin with more clown porn and confronts her; Kaitlin says she doesn't mind Frank, she just doesn't want another "instant family." Why can't she and her mom just be family for a while? Taylor asks Ryan: Would you have said you loved me if you knew I'd gotten into Berkeley? Ryan's relative silence comes across as a "no," and Taylor can't muster the enthusiasm to blow out her birthday candles. Later, Ryan finds her and gives her his real gift, while also expressing his utter devotion and love. Then, guess what? There is an earthquake! A really, really long earthquake with lots of graphic footage of horrible things tumbling everywhere. Did someone die? Has Newport been destroyed? We'll have to wait until next week to find out. Oh My God! "The O.C." Is Officially Over

Yes, sadly, the rumors are true: After four seasons, Fox's "The O.C." is going off the air. According to a press release from the network, Fox wil continue to air new episodes of "The O.C." until the final show on Feb. 22:

"The O.C. Season Four finale will also be the series finale. This feels like the best time to bring the show to its close,” said Josh Schwartz, creator and executive producer of The O.C.

I'm at least glad that Fox is planning to show the rest of the season, because I'm really curious to see what happens next. According to TV Guide columnist Michael Ausiello, the January episodes are likely to be pretty nuts: "Someone's coming out, someone's getting pregnant, and someone's going to receive two marriage proposals." Can't wait to find out those answers. I just hope the finale is sufficiently juicy.

As for "O.C." creator Josh Schwartz, he'll be just fine for now. According to Variety, his new pilot, "an action comedy about 20-something spies" called "Chuck," was just picked up by NBC.

Season Recap: "The O.C."

Season four of Fox's "The O.C." got off to a rocky start. Given, a few hitches are expected when your main characters move into a new phase of their lives (e.g., graduating from high school), but the early part of the season was sorely lacking the campy melodrama we know and love. However, if you stopped watching after the first few episodes of Season 4, you should tune back in in January, because it's getting good again. (You can even sign a petition to save "The O.C.") Here's a recap of the season so far.

Just in case you missed it-maybe you live in Encino or something-Marissa Cooper died at the end of Season 3.
While Summer escapes to Brown University, Ryan defers college to take a job at a bar, Seth is working at the comic book store, and Taylor travels to France.

In a particularly ridiculous plot twist, Ryan begins brawling in Fight Club-like matches hosted by his bar. Summer flies home to see if Ryan is ok, and she and the Cohens arrange a comic-book-themed intervention to show how he saved them all.
Seth and Ryan head down to Mexico to find Volchok and avenge Marissa's death, but Seth tells him to turn himself in. Back in Newport, Sandy negotiates with Volchok and lets Ryan have closure, which involves confronting and punching Volchok.
Taylor secretly returns to Newport to escape her misguided marriage to some French dude, but her mom kicks her out of the house and she goes to live with the Coopers. In helping her through her divorce, Ryan ends up planting a passionate kiss on Taylor, which later leads to them becoming an item.
Julie returns to NewMatch to work with Kirsten, and the two soon get funding from an oil tycoon named Bullitt, who brings a lot of hot new male clients to the business. Next thing Julie knows, Bullitt is pursuing her, and the hot male clients have turned NewMatch into a male prostitution ring, a fact that Kirsten still isn't privy to.

At college, Summer poses as a tree-hugging liberal after meeting a "revolutionary" "hippie" named Che. She's torn between the new Summer and the old summer who loves Seth. Later, Che encourages her to free some bunnies from a lab and ultimately gets her kicked out of school, so Summer returns to Newport and to Seth.
Ryan finally admits he wants to date Taylor, and so he plans a New Year's trip to Las Vegas that Seth and Summer tag along on. Summer has a pregnancy scare, which turns out to be false, but which still prompts Seth to ask her to marry him. She awkwardly accepts.
Bullitt hires a mystery man named Frank to put NewMatch's books in order, and Sandy thinks he looks vexingly familiar. At the end of the last episode, we learned that Frank is actually Ryan's real dad.

The O.C. Recap: Episode 8, "The Earth Girls Are Easy"

It's tough running a male prostitution ring when your business partner still thinks it's merely a dating service. That's where we find Julie in Episode 8 of "The O.C.," when both Kirsten and Bullitt offer to help her keep the books. Feeling in over her head, she and Bullitt's son, Spencer, come up with another solution: They'll burn the evidence and extract themselves from the whoring business once and for all. That is, after they clean up from their New Year's bookings.

Meanwhile, Seth is in the kitchen with Sandy, mulling over a problem of his own: He has made absolutely no plans for New Year's, and Summer isn't happy about it. So, he just decides to tag along with Ryan, who's planning to surprise Taylor with a trip to Las Vegas.

read more At home, Taylor is packing for her Vegas trip, and suddenly her eyes dart nervously from a box of tampons to her calendar. Could she be late? No, it's just the ever-nosy Taylor remembering when Summer's last period was. Summer admits there might have been an unprotected night with Seth, and the two decide to bring a pregnancy test along on the trip. In the car, Taylor is acting weird, so when Seth spots the test, he assumes it's Taylor's. They stop for gas, and Seth asks Ryan if he's sure that he hasn't slept with Taylor. Of course, Seth answers, so when he hears about the test, he assumes Taylor must be sleeping around. Meanwhile, the girls overtake an innocent gas-station bathroom with some serious Newport Beach melodrama. When a hyperventilating Summer can't stand to look at the results, Taylor tosses the test in her purse, only to have the bag stolen by a young woman dressed like an alien. Soon, a moderate-speed chase ensues, and the boys are in hot pursuit of what they think is Taylor's pregnancy test. The foursome ultimately ends up at a rave where-OMG!-everyone is dressed like an alien, which makes the purse-snatching martian very tough to locate. Taylor is upset that Ryan thinks she slept around, so she wanders off. Later, Ryan is upset to find Taylor drinking, to which she snaps: "Why? Because I might be pregnant with my whore baby?" Finally, Summer reveals the truth to Seth: that the test was actually hers. The girls get in the car to drive home and the boys hitch a ride with some ravers. Meanwhile, back at Bullitt's New Year's Eve party, Kaitlin finds a new father figure in the Texan. Bullitt has hired a guy named Frank (yes, that is Kevin Sorbo of TV's "Hercules") to put Julie's books in order. Frank approaches Julie at the bash and seems puzzled that she's still calling NewMatch a dating service. He tells her that if she wants him to keep quiet, she should come up to his hotel room later. She does, but he just wants to talk. Seems that Frank has some demons in his past, and Sandy thinks he looks vexingly familiar. As Julie and Frank chat, we see Sandy pulling up files on him, and then, Frank tells Julie who he really is: Ryan's real father. Whoa. And that's not the only juicy shocker in this episode. When the foursome returns to Newport Beach, Taylor invites Ryan into her bed for "everything but," while Seth and Summer deliberate over the pregnancy test. Before they can look at the results, Seth proposes to Summer with an eyeball ring he took from one of the ravers. She hesitantly says yes; after all, it's highly probable that she's pregnant. But lo and behold, the test is negative, and suddenly that whole proposal thing is left hanging awkwardly in the air. Tune in to see what happens next when "The O.C." returns Jan. 4!
