Green Zone: Heavy on Action (and Preaching)

Meet Matt Damon, war hero. If the Bourne series is any indication, director Paul Greengrass knows how to get a pistol-whip out of the actor, and the two team up once again, bringing that same pumping adrenaline to Baghdad in Green Zone.

Heart-pounding blasts erupt as we open with Chief Miller (Damon) and his army comrades as they sniff out weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, circa 2003. A sniper is firing bullets from a tower and looters run through the streets kicking up dust, but Miller's unit discovers nothing. The government has been providing misinformation regarding the WMDs, and Miller takes it upon himself to figure out what's really going on.

When Miller questions army officials, they act like he's crazy - with the exception of one CIA member, Marty Brown (Brendan Gleeson). Brown confirms Miller's suspicions, and the two begin their own investigation. With help from a Wall Street Journal reporter (Amy Ryan), Miller learns of a mysterious source named "Magellan" who provided information to the press about WMDs; yet, the only person who knows Magellan is Pentagon rep Clark Poundstone (Greg Kinnear) who swiftly tries to shut Miller down at every turn. So what is Poundstone hiding? If you've ever heard the term "conspiracy theory," you can probably guess - but that doesn't diminish the film's suspense.

That's thanks to Greengrass, who uses his fast-paced shots to take us through alleyways and over fences. His on-foot filmmaking is full of shaky camera work that puts you in the thick of the gunfire for an authentic feel, but it also makes you a bit queasy. As we head toward an explosive finish, Damon launches into Jason Bourne mode, and believability goes out the window. Lack of plausibility is OK though when it's an action movie, right?

The problem is that Green Zone wants to be more than that. With a plot about Iraq and government conspiracy, you're bound to have anti-war underpinnings, and the script doesn't miss out on any opportunity to drive the moral home. This message is voiced by an Iraqi character named Freddy (Khalid Abdalla), who Miller takes in to serve as an informant and translator. Freddy doesn't help the US for a reward, he's doing it for his country, as he proclaims "it's not for you to decide what happens here." It's a thought that echoes through to the closing credits, and a worthy point at that - but in the midst of what amounts to countless chase scenes, for Green Zone it's a little out of left field.

Matt Damon Also Prefers Himself Without a Mustache

Matt Damon joined his Green Zone director Paul Greengrass on Friday to talk about their film during a Q&A session at a NYC Apple store. The discussion touched on a variety of topics, from Matt's thoughts on keeping wild animals captive to politics and, finally, to the new facial hair he debuted at the movie's premiere. Matt's evidently not a big fan of his mustache, which he's growing for his role in the remake of True Grit. He joked that it's really only useful "either for a Western or a porno movie." Matt was a little more blunt at last week's screening when he said, "I actually hate the thing."

Would You Want a Fourth Bourne Movie?

Recently, a rumor started circulating regarding a fourth installment of the Bourne franchise. Pulling a line from a Variety article about upcoming Universal Pictures projects, some people believed that the fourth movie was a done deal, but according to an Empire article, this is all news to director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon.

Damon told Empire, "We’ve just kind of been amused by the whole thing. I think it’s one of these stories that has a life of it’s own. Not that we’re against it, we’re all for doing a fourth movie but it means coming up with a good story. There are a lot of things that would have to happen before we would sign up for it."

Do you think a fourth Bourne movie would be a good idea? Do you want more Bourne no matter what? Or should they leave well enough alone with the three movies?

Movie News Roundup: Biel, Arkin and Tisdale - Oh, My!

Lots of movie casting news these days - from Marley and Me to aliens lurking upstairs.

Alan Arkin will join Jennifer Aniston and Owen WIlson in the film adaptation of bestselling memoir Marley and Me. Wilson plays a newspaper columnist who adopts a dog with his wife (Aniston). Arkin will play the editor of the newspaper.
Jessica Biel will star as the lead in the romantic comedy Easy Virtue, based on the Noel Coward play. The movie follows Biel's character, "an American divorcee who travels to the South of France and marries a young Englishman, played by Ben Barnes, on the spur of the moment. The couple return to England to face his family, including his parents, played by Colin Firth and Kristin Scott Thomas."
Amy Ryan is the lucky lady chosen to star opposite Matt Damon in an untitled Iraq war thriller directed by Paul Greengrass, the director of two of the Bourne movies and United 93.
High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale will make her feature film debut in "the adventure comedy" They Came From Upstairs about "a group of teens who have to defend their Maine home from the aliens who invaded the top floor." Just the top floor? Huh.

Matt Damon Has Many DVDs To Gift

Sexiest Man Alive (not letting that one go yet) Matt Damon had a walk and a talk in his favorite outfit with his Bourne director Paul Greengrass in Miami yesterday. While the two are already set to work together again on Imperial Life of Emerald City, is it wrong to hope that they're really discussing many more Bournes to come? Ultimatum will make a great stocking stuffer this year, but I'm sure there's a different DVD Matt will be giving away ad nauseum. He recently provided the final words at the premiere of the 2007 Red Sox World Series commemorative DVD (I know I'll be getting at least five copies of that), saying, "The Red Sox are 2007 World Champions. Suck on it New York!" Heh, all in good fun, right?
