Being Flynn Trailer: Robert De Niro Is Paul Dano's Deadbeat Dad

If you were a fan of the book Another Bullsh*t Night in Suck City and eagerly anticipating the film adaptation, then I hope you paid attention to character names, otherwise you might not have recognized the film version. Retitled Being Flynn after its protagonist, the film is the memoir of Nick Flynn (Paul Dano), a young man who's trying to find his voice as a writer. He has plenty of source material in his tough life, having grown up with only his mother (Julianne Moore) and without his estranged father, Jonathan (played by Robert De Niro), who is also a writer. When Nick starts work at a homeless shelter, he finds Jonathan, an alcoholic who is staying there. Nick seems to find out that he can't escape the fact that his father has had a great deal of influence on his life - and his writing.

I'm probably most interested to see this movie for the pairing of De Niro and Dano as a father and son with a difficult relationship. De Niro is always good, but Dano keeps impressing me with his acting skills with every film he appears in. In this trailer alone, he gave me goosebumps in the more intense scenes, like fighting with De Niro and bashing his head into a mirror. Being Flynn doesn't yet have a release date, but you can watch the trailer after the break.

Michelle Williams Takes On the Wild West in the Meek's Cutoff Trailer

I have a little bit of Western fever after True Grit, so I may be more excited than usual for the Meek's Cutoff trailer, starring Michelle Williams. She plays Emily Tetherow, a woman whose wagon train gets lost as they attempt to take a shortcut over the Cascade Mountains in the 1840s. Conditions become harsher and more hostile, forcing the group to decide whether to trust the natives for help. There's a very threatening and somber tone to the trailer, and the film itself, I'd presume; you know that not everyone is going to survive this trip.

The film, which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival, reunites Williams with her Wendy and Lucy director, Kelly Reichardt, and also costars indie darlings (and future onscreen couple) Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan. As for Williams, it looks like the recent Oscar nominee is turning in another superb performance from under her travel bonnet. The movie comes out April 8, so take a look at the preview when you

Cowboys & Aliens Trailer: Daniel Craig Fights the Law, E.T.

You pretty much know what you're going to get when a movie has an obvious title like Cowboys & Aliens, but in case there was any confusion, the film really is all about cowboys and aliens. Working off the graphic novel of the same title, Jon Favreau's new project creates a hybrid out of western and sci-fi, which feels like a strange (albeit innovative) pairing.

Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde star as early Arizona settlers who are forced to ward off extraterrestrials when a UFO invades their town. The trailer doesn't reveal too much about the characters, but there's something fishy going on with Craig and that Iron Man-like gadget he wears. While I'm a big Favreau fan, this blend of genres definitely takes some getting used to - and I've already watched the trailer six times. Knight and Day: Hot Fun in the Summertime

I recently talked about the tricky territory that is the action romantic comedy, and the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz vehicle Knight and Day was poised to be another stone in the pile of failed attempts. However, the dynamic duo pulled through, and with the help of a clever script and lightning quick, entertaining action, they've delivered a perfectly fun Summer blockbuster.

The lightweight story has enough intrigue to keep you interested, and Cruise plays Roy Miller, the kind of character he should be looking for more of in movies - a vaguely mysterious hero who throws punches more than he monologues. As June, Diaz is a perky delight, as usual (though her spotty Boston accent almost derails her).

But generally, it's tough to complain much about Knight and Day as a popcorn flick; it's so fast-paced that all you have time to do is enjoy yourself. To hear what I liked about it, just

read more. Roy and June bump into each other on a flight to Boston, but their mile-high flirting gets pushed to the side when - oops - Roy has to kill everyone on board. Turns out that he's just a rogue FBI agent, and as an unwitting accomplice, June gets dragged on a breakneck cat-and-mouse game. Diaz and Cruise make a great team, in a much more pleasant scenario than the last time they met in Vanilla Sky. Their chemistry is not necessarily sexual (the scenes that are meant to be romantic sometimes feel forced), but the comfortable rapport of buddies who have known each other for years. The dialogue is perpetually upbeat, even when lives are being threatened, and the witty one-liners that sail out of the characters' mouths keep you on your toes. Even indie prince Paul Dano, as a young genius Miller must protect, gets a couple zingers in there. Overall, the movie is the equivalent of a Summer beach read: an entertaining bit of refreshment you can zip right through.

I'm not sure who I'm most charmed by in this preview for The Extra Man: Paul Dano as a proper young man in New York City, Katie Holmes as his colleague and crush, or Kevin Kline as his curmudgeonly mentor. To be sure, Kline is the star, teaching Dano how to be an "extra man" - that is, a man who wines and dines older society ladies to get by.

This is definitely a slice of a quirky indie, with Kline holding court in an over-the-top character-driven role. And since Holmes's onscreen appearances are rare these days, I'm always curious to see what projects have drawn her in. To watch the trailer for The Extra Man, just

Movie Preview: Brian Cox and Paul Dano in The Good Heart

Why does Paul Dano always have to play so tortured? That's the question I'm asking myself after watching this trailer for The Good Heart. Dano stars as Lucas, a suicidal homeless guy who befriends an older man named Jacques (Brian Cox) while in the hospital. Jacques has heart problems due to his hard-living ways and takes Lucas on as a mentee, teaching him how to run his bar for the day when he's long gone. Also, Jacques apparently hates women, so you can imagine his anger when Lucas brings home a pretty girl (Isild Le Besco) to marry.

The preview includes the obligatory washed-out colors and pensive piano music you might expect, but I'm actually pretty curious to check it out when it comes to theaters on April 30. Even if Dano's role is a downer, the relationship between him and Cox looks the stuff of a quiet, character-driven drama. Perhaps next time, Dano can just try a light romance for a change? Just a thought.

Tom Works Night and Day While Suri Shops With Katie

Katie Holmes left Long Island, where she had been working on The Romantics and headed into NYC for a weekend with Suri. The girls were out to see The Lion King on Friday night, with little Suri looking sleepy as they left the theater together. Saturday they bundled up in coats for a few long walks with Katie's mom, and Suri showed off her red dress from the children's Holmes and Yang and green backpack. Isabella Cruise joined them yesterday for a trip to the ballet, when Suri broke out a pair of bright rain boots despite the sunny day.

Tom, meanwhile, is still in Austria filming Knight and Day. His Friday night was a late one, as he took to a roof to film a dramatic looking action scene with Cameron Diaz. They continued on into Saturday with their work, though Cameron took the evening off to attend a Mozart recital at a local church with their costar Paul Dano.
