Paul McCartney to Headline 2009 Coachella

Paul McCartney is making the rounds these days, what with promoting his latest album Electric Arguments - most hilariously on The Colbert Report, the uncomfortable video of which you can check out after the jump - and now there's news that he'll topline the the tenth Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this April. The question becomes, however, is Coachella a good fit for this former Beatle?

LA Times blogger Geoff Boucher wonders "What remains to be seen is whether the choice will cost the festival credibility with its core clientele: young fans who are more likely to listen to the White Stripes than the White Album and who are far more familiar with Rage Against the Machine than Band on the Run."

Some of the other acts of note on this year's lineup include Morrissey, The Cure, Franz Ferdinand, Leonard Cohen, M. Ward, Amy Winehouse, The Killers, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Bloody Valentine and Jenny Lewis. To see the full list of acts performing at this year's festival, click here.

John Lennon Biopic is a Go; Now, Who Should Play John?

John Lennon's life looks like it's heading for the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter writes that a biopic called Nowhere Boy is in the works, to be directed by visual artist Sam Taylor-Wood and written by Matt Greenhalgh, who most recently wrote the Ian Curtis biopic Control.

According to the Reporter, the movie will film in Lennon's hometown of Liverpool and focus on his early years:

Greenhalgh's script details the story of Lennon as a lonely teenager growing up as his aunt and the mother who gave him up fight for his love. His only escape is music, art and his fateful friendship with Paul McCartney.

Casting is reportedly underway now for the lead role - which of course brings about the crucial question: What actors could you see playing the young John Lennon? And how about prefame Paul? (For an irreverent take on the question, there's always Paul Rudd as John and Jack Black as Paul, as seen in Walk Hard . . . but I'm pretty sure that's not the tone this particular film is going for.)

James Gandolfini is selling his Sopranos costumes to benefit a nonprofit organization that helps severely wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, the AP reports.
Speaking of charity, ABC, CBS and NBC will set aside an hour on September 5 to simulcast a fundraiser for cancer research, according to the AP.
ComingSoon has the news that Ewan McGregor will be joining Hilary Swank and Richard Gere in the Amelia Earhart biopic.
According to Billboard, the original members of Simple Minds will hit the recording studio next month for the first time in 27 years.
Zap2It reports that ABC's comedy pilot Roman's Empire (produced by Ashton Kutcher) found a lead: Kelsey Grammer.
Brandon Routh, Sophia Bush, Jesse Bradford and several others have been cast in the comedic movie Table for Three, writes Variety.
Paul McCartney was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale over the weekend, Billboard reports.

Music Video: Paul McCartney, "Dance Tonight"

I can't stop thinking about the dreamy, surreal video Michel Gondry directed for Paul McCartney's new single, "Dance Tonight," from the forthcoming album Memory Almost Full. In it, a delivery man (played by Mackenzie Crook, aka Gareth from the BBC version of "The Office") brings McCartney a mandolin, and when he begins to strum it, various half-transparent, not-quite-human creatures - including one played by Natalie Portman - start to playfully wreak havoc on McCartney's house. Watching it feels like trying to remember a dream I can't quite recall, and it's a surprisingly haunting video for such an upbeat song. To watch it, read more
