What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Pan's Labyrinth
Not for the weak of stomach, Pan's Labyrinth is a mesmerizing, adventurous, grisly yet beautiful fantasy tale for adults. Set in 1944 Spain after the Spanish Civil War, the story follows young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), who goes to live with her new stepfather, the ruthlessly cruel Captain Vidal. In the nearby woods, Ofelia stumbles upon an other worldly realm where she meets fantastical creatures, like the Fauno (Pan) who informs her that she is actually a princess, and in order to return to her rightful royal family, she must complete certain tasks. Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro is masterful in his weaving together of a fantastical story and a grimly violent reality. For more details - including my thoughts on the film's remarkable sound production - check out my review. The 2-disc DVD includes plenty of special features, including featurettes on the myths of the film and production sketches.

Another good one if you

Also not for the faint of heart, The Dead Girl features a great cast including Toni Collette, James Franco and Giovanni Ribisi, and was both written and directed by Karen Moncreiff. The crime drama centers on the murder of a young woman and spins outward to tell the stories of several other characters. Each person's segment is like a well-crafted short story, with the film culminating in a story about "the dead girl" herself. Chilling and dark, The Dead Girl is a successful follow-up to Moncreiff's last project, Blue Car.

TV Dinners: Pan's Labyrinth - Caramelized Grapes

Unfortunately I don't get out of the kitchen often enough to see all of the Oscar nominated movies (be sure to fill in BuzzSugar's Oscar ballot). However I did manange to make some time to check out Pan's Labyrinth, the nominee for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. Although the movie is wonderfully beautiful, there is one scene that takes the cake (or should I say grape?). If you've seen the movie (warning mild spoilers ahead), you'll recall that Ofelia has to retrieve the dagger from the room with the monster and an amazing foodie spread (roasts, fresh fruits, wines, breads, etc) without eating a single morsel. Unfortunately, our lovely heroine falls victim to the offerings and ends up chomping down on some particularly huge red globe grapes. During this scene I found myself yelling No! Don't eat anything!! However, we all know that I would probably do the same.

Lucky for me, I can chow down on grapes anytime and do not have to worry about some freaky hand-eye monster chasing me down. And since this is the case, I've decided to try this simple recipe for Brie en Croute with Caramelized Grapes. To check out a delicious recipe using luscious red globe grapes, as well as see a film clip of the entire Pan's Labyrinth feast scene,

Here's the scene where Ofelia just can't seem to resist the delicious feast. Just a bit of a warning: this scene is almost seven minutes long and is a bit creepy.

and now for a much nicer presentation of grapes:

Brie en Croute with Caramelized Grapes
From David Scherer

3 sheets puff pastry
3 circles Brie cheese
1 egg, lightly beaten

60g butter (about 2 oz)
500g seeded Muscat grapes (or red globe grapes)
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 185C/365 F

2. Cut out a circle of pastry large enough to place the cheese in the center and be able to bring the pastry up around the sides to just lap the top of the cheese.

3. Cut out another circle to neatly fit on top.

4. Brush the pastry with egg and bake for 12 minutes until the pastry is cooked. Let sit for 10 minutes before cutting and serving

5. While pastry is cooling, place the sugar in a frypan over a medium heat until it just begins to caramelise, add in the grapes and continue to cook for 5 minutes.

6. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter and cinnamon. Serve with cheese.

Print recipe with images | without images

Pan's Labyrinth: Gruesome and Amazing

Pan’s Labyrinth has been marketed as a “fairy tale for adults,” and perhaps for lack of other categorization, it is. It has fanciful elements that could be compared to stories by Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen, but this tale is even darker and more gruesome than many adult stories - fairy tale or otherwise. What it certainly is NOT is a fairy tale for children, though the previews can be slightly misleading. If you've considered bringing a child or even a squeamish adult to this movie, don't. If I saw this movie as a child, I would have never slept again, and I may actually have that problem now.

The film is unbelievably gory and disgusting, yet it is also one of the most wonderful movies I’ve seen in a long time. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, who brought us Hellboy and Blade II, the Spanish-language movie is a fantasy that unfolds in a very real and frightening setting: Franco’s post-Spanish Civil War Spain, 1944. A sense of darkness and desperation permeates the entire film, but it is really a story about a little girl’s journey towards hope, so

Ivana Baquero plays Ofelia, a dreamy young girl who travels with her mother to live with Ofelia's new stepfather, Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez), at his military outpost in the countryside. The Captain is a coldhearted, ruthlessly cruel man, surrounded by people who live in fear of him. Meanwhile, a group of revolutionaries hiding in the woods are plotting Captain Vidal's downfall. Ofelia tries to stay by her mother, Carmen (Adriana Gil), who is enduring a very difficult pregnancy. Afraid and lonely, Ofelia wanders in the forest near the outpost and discovers an ancient labyrinth. There she meets the “Fauno,” or Pan, a large satyr with a deep voice, at times comforting and then fierce. He informs her that she is actually a princess and that her regal father has been searching for her for ages. In order to get back to her rightful family, she must complete certain tasks dictated by the Fauno. Reality, however, has other things in store, and the rest of the film alternates between the terrifying “real world” unfolding in the Captain’s home and the “other world” where she desperately works toward completing her tasks.

The “other world” is by turns enchanting and horrifying. Yes, there are darling little fairies that flit about Ofelia’s head, but there is also a bloody-fingered monster with eyeballs on his palms who rips the heads off fairies and noisily chomps their bloody skulls. When Ofelia, covered in roach-like insects, encounters a giant frog who literally throws himself up along with his gelatinous innards, I felt like I might just do the same.

The sound design on this movie is remarkable. Every flutter of fairy wings, every singed-paper sound from the Captain's cigarette, and especially the deep timbre of the Fauno’s voice are crisp and clear to a stunning degree. This also means, however, that during a bludgeoning scene, we can hear the process it goes from dull thudding to the wet crunch of bones and blood.

If we were to indeed lump this story into the genre in which Lord of the Rings reigns, there is a key, notable difference: The likes of LOTR or other fantasy stories generally focus on male protagonists who go on adventures to accomplish things, while females are largely irrelevant, thrown in as mild love interests or the harbingers of some message. This story, while grim and macabre, is also beautiful, and the characters who exhibit the most bravery, sacrifice, and cleverness are female. Dark and dismal as Pan's Labyrinth is, the golden thread of Ofelia's determination throughout the plot is unmistakable, and in the end, it is ultimately the story of a little girl who grittily fights her way toward hope and light.

WTF Selma Blair?!

Selma came out to a screening of Pan's Labyrinth the other night in LA. While the night was supposed to be about the film, we can't doubt that there was much ado made over Selma's new haircut. She really seems to be digging her do which leads us to believe she may have cut her hair like this on purpose! Still, we're holding out hope that she's doing a film that's set in the 80's and that it grows out really quick.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark: Light on Scares

In Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, a young girl named Sally (Bailee Madison) moves cross-country to Blackwood Manor, a Gothic estate her architect father (Guy Pearce), and his interior decorator girlfriend (Katie Holmes) are renovating. Soon after arriving, Sally begins to hear eerie voices coming from tiny creatures in the mansion's basement, and what follows is a pretty formulaic approach to a horror film - there's a house with a dark history, an all-too-knowledgeable groundskeeper, and a child whose fears are written off by the adults around her. The story feels all too familiar, and you can pretty much guess what's going to happen every step of the way.

The film is a remake of a 1970s made-for-TV movie that producer and cowriter Guillermo del Toro cites as the scariest movie he ever saw as a child. It's hard not to expect a unique take on a haunted horror film, given the fact that del Toro created such a vivid imaginary world in Pan's Labyrinth. Instead we get a lot of clichés, and one of the only deviations from standard horror movie fare - an intricate mythology surrounding the creatures - emerges as more confusing than scary. To find out more about why del Toro's monster's failed to make my skin crawl, just

The tiny beasts who torment Sally are most terrifying during the first half of the film, when we only catch brief glimpses of their claws and beady eyes, experiencing them through their raspy whispers. Their ability to inspire fear, however, diminishes when they make their first appearance onscreen and we see that instead of the terrifying boogeymen we've been envisioning are scruffy rat-like creatures that have been brought to life with CGI effects.

More convincing than the little critters is Madison, who taps into Sally's loneliness and fear with such ease, it's hard to believe she was only nine when the film was shot. We feel Sally's pain and isolation as she cries over her parents' divorce, weeps during a phone call to her mother, and wanders the estate's grounds by herself. Madison steals the spotlight from Pearce, who is largely forgettable in his role as a father who cares more about his career than his daughter. Holmes's character Kim, on the other hand, has a little more emotional depth, as we see her struggle to connect with the distant girl who has recently entered her life, and then goes on to become Sally's ally in dealing with the haunting.

If you're a fan of classic horror films that make you scream at characters as they make one bad choice after another, then you will probably enjoy Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Those who are expecting a more terrifying tale that will stick with them for days might be disappointed, as this definitely isn't the type of film that's going to make you want to sleep with the lights on once you get home.
