10 Movies That Should Have Gotten Oscar Nominations in a Bigger Field

The news that the Best Picture category at the Oscars will now include 10 nominees instead of five got me thinking: What movies from the past would I have included in the list of nominees if there were enough slots? I've gone back to 1999 and worked my way up to 2008, choosing titles that I think were worthy of a nod if this rule had existed back then. What would you have wanted to nominate, if that had been an option?

Best Picture Category to Include 10 Nominees at Next Oscars

For the first time since 1943, the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards will include 10 nominees instead of five. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis made the announcement today, and assured us that the outcome - just one Best Picture winner - will still be the same.

Ganis commented, "Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize." It makes me wonder if Wall-E might have gotten a nomination if there were 10 slots at the last Oscars.

Wow - five more nominees. This should be interesting! Do you think it's good that the Academy will have more options for Best Picture? What other five movies from last year (so, in addition to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire) would you have put in the Best Picture category if it allowed for 10 then?

Should Wall-E Be Nominated for Best Picture?

Wall-E has been showered with praise from critics and audiences alike. These kinds of accolades haven't really been heard since, say, There Will Be Blood, or I dunno, Juno - both of which were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars this year.

Now there's a a campaign afoot to get Wall-E out of the Best Animated Film category and into competition with the big guns. Vulture argues that Wall-E should be the second animated film (so far we've only seen Disney's Beauty and the Beast) to be included in this category because it's exactly the kind of movie that the Academy wants to consider for Best Picture: it's both well-reviewed and beloved by audiences.

Hollywood Elsewhere argues against this, stating that "the electric segregation fence must be respected and fortified" and that animation can't really hold a candle to the "unfettered dignity that comes from simply aiming a camera at real people and real locations and making it all sing."

Where do you stand? Do you think Wall-E deserves to be in the Best Picture category in February, or should everyone be happy with a Best Animation nod?

My Irrelevant (But Way Fun) Oscar Poll Results

While the "real" Oscar categories cover a lot of ground, there are some very important issues they neglect, such as who should win Hottest Actor. So for the past few weeks, I've been making up my own categories and asking you to select the winners. Here is a round-up of the results to my own Oscar races.

Who Would Win for Best Villain?
According to you, if there were a Best Villain category, Meryl Streep would win for The Devil Wears Prada. Streep plays Miranda Priestly, the cold, ruthless fashion editor who makes life a living nightmare for doe-eyed editorial assistant Andy Sachs. Personally, I think Sergi Lopez would win as the brutally cruel Capitan Vidal in Pan's Labyrinth, though Streep's performance was perhaps more layered, providing glimpses into Miranda's vulnerability. Not that that excuses her being a big meanie.

What Platonic Duo Deserves an Oscar?
Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway were another favored choice for many of you in this category, but according to the final tally, the Oscar for Best Platonic Duo would go to Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson in The Departed. Talk about a dysfunctional relationship: As mob boss Frank Costello, Nicholson plays father figure to young gangster Leo, who all the while is working deep undercover plotting to bring down the closet thing he's got to a dad. Both actors play the conflicted roles expertly.

Which Adult and Kid Pairing Deserves an Oscar?
Many Oscar-nominated films this year featured kids in big roles, and it's always so heartwarming to see an adult and child duo that has a lot of chemistry. According to you guys, the award for best adult-kid pairing should go to Will Smith and Jaden Smith as the father-son team in The Pursuit of Happyness. Of course, they have a bit of an upper hand, being father and son in real life, but regardless they are an undeniably adorable duo.

Who Would Win for Best On-Screen Romance?
Wow, the race for this one was extremely close! As of this writing, the second-place winners by only one vote are Jessica Biel and Edward Norton in The Illusionist, and the big award would go to Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. I must say that I suspect this has more to do with all of you living vicariously through Keira Knightley and less to do with the pair's performance! Trust me, I don't blame you.

Who Would Win Hottest Actor?
I'm partial to Daniel Craig's dreamy blue eyes, but apparently it's Leonardo DiCaprio who wins your hearts - and the Hottest Actor award. Luckily, you Leo admirers can see him in two award-nominated films: The Departed and Blood Diamond. You can Netflix The Departed already, and Blood Diamond can be yours as of March 20. Happy Leo watching!

Oscar Buzz: the LA Film Critics Awards

The Golden Globe Awards will be handed out tonight, and that's not the only place to find pre-Oscar buzz. On Sunday, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association gave out its 2006 awards, which are also considered early Oscar indicators. The critically acclaimed Letters from Iwo Jima was voted Best Picture of the Year, with The Queen as runner up. For directing, Clint Eastwood was runner up to Paul Greengrass of United 93, and Helen Mirren took home the prize for Best Actress.

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to Host the Oscars - Together!

Earlier today I was sad to hear that Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller had turned down an offer to host the Oscars together, but the biggest awards show of the year has landed an equally hilarious duo: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin! The comedians will team up to take over for Hugh Jackman, and I'm already giddy thinking about the high jinks that will ensue. I love that we're getting two well-seasoned vets in the humor department (a la Billy Crystal), and we've already seen how great these guys are together after Steve's guest appearance on 30 Rock last season.

So many questions come to mind: Will there be duets? Dance numbers? (Man, I hope so). Are you excited for dual hosting duties or are you worried that we'll get another harried repeat of the 2008 Emmys?

Buzz In: Who Should Host the 2010 Oscars?

Halloween is in full bloom, and you know what that means: the holiday and award seasons are just around the corner. In the next two months, we'll be hearing lots of Oscar buzz as the year's final movies come down the pike, but the films won't be the only stars of the show.

There have already been whispers about who should host the upcoming show - Hugh Jackman boosted the ratings last year, so should he get invited back? Would you rather see a revival of a different past emcee, like Billy Crystal or Jon Stewart, or would you prefer some fresh blood? Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Neil Patrick Harris take a whack at it after doing such a great job with the Emmys, but I'd welcome Jackman back as well. What say you?
