Cool Idea: The Innervision Mirror

Sometimes a mirror doesn't show us what we want to see, be it an unfortunate new hair color in the beautician's mirror, or a bit of smudged mascara on your eyelid. Sometimes we just need the mirror to tell us something good. That's why I can heartily recommend the Thorsten Van Elten Innervision Mirror ($100). Available in two different quotes from author and man-about-town Oscar Wilde, my favorite reads, "To love oneself is the beginning of a life long romance." A fitting sentiment for all of us on the brink of Valentine's Day - whether we're single or involved.

The other quote isn't quite as much of a pep talk, but it is cheeky - and appropriate: "It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances." After all, Oscar Wilde is the author of the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, a gothic meditation on beauty.

Amanda Seyfried Is A Woman of No Importance

This adaptation of Oscar Wilde's comedy A Woman of No Importance has been in the works for a while now, with Lindsay Lohan reportedly having the main role initially but then backing out of the project a year ago. Next up there were rumors that Sienna Miller was taking the lead role, and at the time of this posting, her name is still on the project's IMDB page. But today various news sources are reporting that Amanda Seyfried will in fact play the main character.

Annette Bening and Sean Bean will also star in the film in which "Seyfried will play an American who finds herself falling in love with the womanizing Lord Illingworth (Bean) in the English countryside until his mother (Bening) throws a wrench in his plans."

Surely Oscar Wilde deserves a better actress than Lindsay Lohan, but between Sienna Miller and Amanda Seyfried, do you think Seyfried is the better choice? I personally prefer Seyfried, and she won't have to fake an American accent, which is nice. I just think they should get on with production already!

Ben Barnes Goes From Prince Caspian to Dorian Gray

Right on the heels of starring in the No. 1 movie at the box office, Ben Barnes has landed another gig - and it's a doozy. The adorable Prince Caspian will play the title character in a film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Oliver Parker is "planning to make a visceral, dark horror story and says the themes of stardom are as relevant as ever."

That was my immediate thought as well, that the book's themes of vanity and the desire for everlasting youth and beauty seem to be incredibly relevant to today's world (especially in American society, though Dorian Gray does not take place in America). I had to read this novel in college and I'm so glad I did. It's a riveting - and often scary - read. If you haven't read it, this is the plot description: "Dorian Gray is a young man of impossible physical beauty whose portrait - painted by the artist Basil Hallward - becomes connected on an occult level with the workings of his soul. Drawn into a corrupt and sensual life by the dissolute Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian remains young and beautiful, while the painting ages in his stead, ultimately becoming a monstrosity."

Glenn Close scored an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a woman posing as a man in 19th century Ireland. Forced to assume the dress and mannerisms of a man to secure a job as a butler in order to survive in the oppressive times, Albert finds his arrangement shaken up by the arrival of a stranger with a secret (Janet McTeer) and her involvement with her fellow servants (played by Mia Wasikowska and Aaron Johnson). Deleted scenes and commentary by director Rodrigo Garcia and Glenn Close are included with the DVD.

One for the Money

Katherine Heigl is Stephanie Plum, card-carrying Jersey girl and badass, in the film adaptation of Janet Evanovich's popular murder mystery series. Out-of-work Plum gets a gig working for her cousin as a bail bondswoman, and despite her lack of experience, she's got a knack for hunting down perps. Her biggest challenge is whether to get back with her momentary high school sweetheart, Joe Morelli, or give in to a fellow recovery agent's charms. Extras include featurettes and a gag reel.

The Grey

It's Liam Neeson vs. the wild in this grim thriller. Neeson's character Ottway is already battling suicidal thoughts when his plane crashes in a remote part of Alaskan wilderness. Now, he must not only find a way to avoid catching hypothermia, but protect his friends from a pack of wolves hungry for a snack. As the film progresses, it becomes clearer that battling with the wolves is an easier fight than battling with one another. DVD extras include commentary by director Joe Carnahan and deleted scenes.

4 Details to Look Forward to in Pixar's Brave

The magic of Pixar's Oscar-winning films is in their ability to take seemingly ordinary story lines about childhood toys or a garbage-collecting robot and transform them into emotional narratives about love and life. The studio's upcoming Summer film Brave is its first foray into the familiar coming-of-age tale, this one as told through the experiences of a defiant teenage girl. Pixar's first female lead, Merida, is a princess with an affinity for archery in ancient Scotland who refuses to give up her freedom by submitting to an arranged marriage and sets off to change her fate.

Though the movie isn't due for release until June 22, 2012, we caught an unfinished preview of the first 30 minutes of Brave, and there's a lot to get excited about in this Pixar period piece. Here's why the film is worth the wait:

Pixar Technical Wizardry - Brave demonstrates the studio's technical prowess at its best. Merida's gorgeous curls (seen in the above picture) are no easy feat of animation. There's a reason so few of your favorite animated characters have big, curly hair - it's very difficult to create on the computer. Over 111,000 individual curls were hand-drawn for Merida's mane, which was then digitally rendered as 1.8 million strands. Pixar then had to create a physics simulator to mathematically control how the waves move in the wind and exist within gravity.
The Art - Without verging into awkward moments of uncanny valley, Brave has moments of startling realism amid its fantasy story line. The overcast skies and moss-covered landscape of Scotland have been painstakingly studied, drawn, and shaded to create a setting worthy of this new legend. By the time filming wrapped, 111,394 storyboard drawings were created, a number that far exceeds the preproduction that went into most other Pixar films.

Paul Rudd Gets Recognized as an "Honorary Irishman" by Jon, Orlando, and Julia

Paul Rudd was joined by his wife, Julie Yaeger, on the green carpet before the Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film gala in LA. The comedian, who wasn't born in Ireland and isn't Irish, was presented with the "Honorary Irishman" award by Julia Roberts. Paul and Julia, who often supports her friends in the business, became close when starring in Three Days of Rain on Broadway in 2006. Paul took the stage to accept the honor, saying, "I am so grateful, I am honored, I am humbled . . . And I'm Irish." It was another star-studded event hosted by the US-Ireland Alliance, after last year's brought out Tom Cruise to salute his pal J.J. Abrams. Mad Men's Jon Hamm was in the audience to support Paul, as was new dad Orlando Bloom. Jon kept the party rounds going by also hitting a Grey Goose bash with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Cameron Diaz, in orange Victoria Beckham, shared laughs and champagne with pal Kate Hudson, wearing red Versace. Kate arrived on the arm of fiancé Matt Bellamy, while Cameron's rumored guy, Diddy, also went to the bash. Gwyneth Paltrow said hello to Jane Fonda, while nearby, a girlie crew of Paula Patton, Amy Adams, Claire Danes, and Jennifer Westfeldt caught up. Kate Bosworth, who made the rounds in Prabal Gurung, couldn't keep her hands off her boyfriend Michael Polish.

Tom Cruise and an Elie Saab-clad Katie Holmes made the rounds as well. They spent a good chunk of time with their longtime friends Victoria Beckham, in her own design, and David Beckham. Tom and Katie also said hello to a Monique Lhuillier-clad Lily Collins and George Lucas. Love was in the air! Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde watched the Oscars show from the Sunset Tower Hotel, in the company of Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm, Claire Danes, and Tom Ford. Sofia Coppola also checked out the telecast with Jason, Olivia, and company, and later welcomed her husband Thomas Mars to the fun. Miley Cyrus found a seat to spend quality time with her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth.
