Oprah Will Say Goodbye to Her Talk Show in 2011

If getting a chance to sit in on Oprah is something you've always wanted to do, you'd better start looking into tickets - the queen of daytime talk shows is closing up shop. Winfrey will announce on her show tomorrow that her last episode will air on Sept. 9, 2011. Harpo president Tim Bennett released a statement saying,

"Tomorrow, Oprah will announce live on The Oprah Winfrey Show that she has decided to end what is arguably one of the most popular, influential and enduring programs in television history. The sun will set on the Oprah show as its 25th season draws to a close on September 9, 2011."

Oprah's show has been on the air for as long as I can remember, and while I'm more of a sporadic watcher, it's hard to imagine the television industry without her favorite things and high-profile interviews with A-listers and beyond. What do you make of this news - will you miss Oprah or is it time for her to go?

How Long Should Oprah's Show Go On?

Between her postelection special and her hilarious appearance on 30 Rock, Oprah Winfrey had a pretty huge week last week. But there was one big rumor swirling toward the end of it: that Oprah might quit her talk show in 2011 to focus on starting her TV network.

Oprah's current contract expires in Fall 2011, but her production company, Harpo, said no decision has been made about whether to continue the show beyond that. It's not the first time there have been discussions about the long-running talk show ending: Oprah once said she'd end it in 2006 but obviously changed her mind.

Oprah's show has been around for most of my lifetime, and I honestly have a hard time imagining television without it! How much longer do you think her talk show should go on?

Sunday Funnies: 30 Rock

I know I don't usually recap 30 Rock around here, but after this week's episode - which featured a guest appearance from Oprah - I figured there was no better time to talk about the show. If you haven't seen the episode yet, the whole thing's on Hulu, so treat yourself this Sunday and give it a watch. Some of my favorite moments:

The idea that Jack Donaghy's tranquilizers might lead to "sleep crime."
Liz, under the influence of said tranquilizers, whispering that she was "snitting next to Barpo."
Tracy Jordan's monster claw.
Sweater capes!
Oprah's ninth-grade boyfriend.

If none of this makes sense to you, you owe it to yourself to watch that episode now.

And then there's the moment that had me laughing so hard that I cried so hard that I literally couldn't see my TV. Out of context, it might not even be as funny, but I'm telling you, at the time, it was the most hilarious thing I'd ever seen. Movie News: Vampires, Legends, Oprah, Tonto, and More

It's a busy time for Tinseltown:

Another 20-something city girl: Anne Hathaway will play the lead role in the film version of a book I really enjoyed: The Opposite of Love. The movie is about "a commitment-phobic attorney who finds her well-constructed life coming apart at the seams when she rebuffs her ready-for-marriage boyfriend."
Before I was legend: Well, it's official - Will Smith will reprise his role as Dr. Robert Neville in an I Am Legend prequel. This movie "will cover the final days of humanity in New York City before a man-made virus creates a plague that wipes out the population, leaving Neville alone with the mutated inhabitants."
What's the latest in vampire news, Buzz?: Funny you should ask! Cloverfield director Matt Reeves's next project is a "vampire tale" titled Let the Right One In, a remake of a Swedish film about "a young boy who befriends a female neighbor who moves to town." I bet she's not your ordinary neighbor.
More vampires, not so much movie related: Mostly I'm just excited about this news because it's about Guillermo del Toro (yay!!) who "is collaborating with crime author Chuck Hogan on a trilogy of vampire novels, starting next Summer with The Strain. I love that guy (del Toro, not Chuck Hogan).

Disney just loves Johnny Depp, but then again, who doesn't? Along with taking on the role of the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Disney announced that Johnny Depp will also star in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and he will star as Tonto in The Lone Ranger.
O, that voice! In more Disney news, Oprah Winfrey will give voice to Eudora in the New Orleans-set animated princess movie, The Princess and the Frog.
Wondering what Jonathan Rhys Meyers is up to these days? Well, I'll tell ya. Meyers is teaming up with John Travolta in the thriller From Paris With Love. The story follows "a young embassy worker and an American secret agent who cross paths while working on a high-risk mission in Paris." Travolta, though? Really?

Are You More Likely to Read a Book if It's an Oprah Pick?

Oprah's book club has had its ups and downs over the years. On the positive end, the book club often provides huge success for authors when the queen of talk bestows her little golden sticker on a book. Downs have included things like the scandal around A Million Little Pieces, and a public dissing of her book club from The Corrections author Jonathan Franzen.

Ken Follett, author of The Pillars of the Earth, is experiencing some major ups all of a sudden, despite the fact that his book was published in 1989. Once it became an Oprah selection, his book shot straight to the top of bestselling lists and now there's news of a TV series in the works by Ridley Scott's production company.

Yet, despite Oprah's glowing reviews, I still couldn't bring myself to read The Pillars of the Earth because it just doesn't interest me. How about you? Do you take Oprah's word for it when it comes to books?

Do You Want to Watch a Competition About Giving?

Oprah is hoping to convert her daytime success into some primetime interest with a new series called Oprah's Big Give, in which 10 regular people will compete to "outgive" each other in a variety of contests. In the first episode, for example, contestants are tasked with changing someone's life in a big and creative way. The person who does the least to help his or her stranger will be sent packing, while the rest continue on to other charitable challenges.

While a show about helping other people sounds like a good thing - and certainly not the worst use of reality TV ever - it strikes me as odd to send someone home for not giving well enough. Aren't judging and giving sort of opposites? Check out the preview below and let me know what you think. Is this something you're excited to watch?

Oprah Gets Her Own TV Network

It was probably only a matter of time before Oprah Winfrey staked out a TV network of her very own, but now it's official: Oprah will launch her own cable channel, OWN, in mid-2009. She issued a statement saying:

Fifteen years ago, I wrote in my journal that one day I would create a television network, as I
always felt my show was just the beginning of what the future could hold. For me, the launch of The Oprah Winfrey Network is the evolution of the work I’ve been doing on television all these years and a natural extension of my show.

The channel will be part of Discovery's cable networks (which also include TLC and the Travel Channel) and will take over for the current Discovery Health network. It won't carry Oprah's talk show, at least at the start, because rights to new and repeat broadcasts are already spoken for through 2011. But the Associated Press reports that some of Oprah's regular contributors could find a home on OWN. Paging Dr. Phil!

Discovery says OWN - a pretty great acronym, if you ask me - will have the same mission statement as the rest of Oprah's ventures: inspiring people to live their best lives. So, do you think Oprah TV would be something you'd want to watch? Or is it all just a little too much?
