Variety Women's Impact Report: Marketa Irglova

Variety has issued its annual Women's Impact Report, highlighting women who have made an impression at all levels of entertainment. Just like last year, the list includes executive powerhouses, household-name performers, and lesser-known talents. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be spotlighting some of the women whom I find particularly noteworthy. Today's pick: musician and actress Marketa Irglova.

Irglova made her grand entrance as a performer in Once, the 2006 film starring her and Glen Hansard as a pair of musicians who spent a week writing their own love story in song. But she made an even bigger splash at the Oscars, when she and Hansard won the award for Best Original Song. Hansard got to speak, but Irglova didn't, and she was initially ushered offstage. But then, in a moment that several of you called an Oscar favorite, Jon Stewart brought her back onstage, where she delivered a brief speech on the nature of hope and art.

Variety didn't get to speak with Irglova for the Impact Report story, but that one speech was enough to earn her a mention, so it's worth reproducing part of it here:

This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we're standing here tonight, the fact that we're able to hold this, it's just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it's possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don't give up.

Irglova and Hansard, who play music together as The Swell Season, are currently touring and are reportedly at work on another album. In the meantime, I highly recommend checking out this NPR interview with the two of them, which left me with an even greater appreciation for their music and their own love story.

Even if the film Once didn't win you over to the music of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the Oscars just might have. Not only did the two deliver a well-received performance of their song "Falling Slowly," they also won the Best Original Song award - not to mention some hearts after after Irglova was cut off at the microphone and then brought back out by Jon Stewart to accept the award with a touching and gracious speech.

Shortly before the Oscars, the pair stopped by the Spinner studio at AOL to perform several of their songs and talk about their partnership. The two had been making music together for years before Once came up, and now the film has gotten them a new, big time record deal. While we're waiting for a follow-up to their film and debut album, the Spinner podcast has much to tide us over - including an mp3 download and cool video of their studio performance of "Falling Slowly." The Juno soundtrack has become the No. 1 album on Billboard's charts, writes Billboard.
Police uncovered a real-life Weeds-style pot garden in the suburb where Weeds films some of its scenes, the LA Daily News reports.
According to ComingSoon, Kevin Nealon will play the dad to Ashley Tisdale's character in the alien movie They Came From Upstairs.
ABC is issuing a disclaimer for the Eli Stone premiere after complaints about a storyline that links childhood vaccines and autism, TV Guide reports.
After a last-minute controversy that almost got it dropped from the Oscar ballot, "Falling Slowly" from Once is officially eligible for the Best Original Song award, according to the New York Times.
Hollywood Reporter has news that director Sam Raimi will create a live-action weekly TV series titled Wizard's First Rule, based on the fantasy series The Sword of Truth.
Channing Tatum and Dennis Quaid are the latest additions to the live-action G.I. Joe movie, Variety reports.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to these titles, you can now find the five-disc collector's edition of Blade Runner.

The Simpsons Movie
In case you missed one of the biggest movies of the summer, you can now enjoy The Simpsons Movie in your very own home. In the movie, one of TV's favorite bumbling dads accidentally contaminates Springfield's water supply, and the town is placed under a giant dome by the government. The Simpsons then need to figure out a way to save the day.

The extras feature an assortment of goodies, including audio commentary by various voice actors and the directors, extended and deleted scenes, and a collection of the promotional stuff they did to generate buzz for the summer release. One of these is Homer's guest monologue on The Tonight Show. Woo-hoo!

Stardust
One of my December Must-Haves, Neil Gaiman's story Stardust is a fun and magical adventure. The extremely cute Charlie Cox stars as the lovestruck Tristan who promises the woman of his dreams (Sienna Miller) that he'll retrieve a fallen star for her. The star turns out to be Yvaine (Claire Danes), who is also being pursued by brothers competing to take over their father's throne and a witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) hoping to use Yvaine's heart to make her youthful. As Tristan and Yvaine elude their pursuers, they start to fall in love with each other.

The special features on this disc are your average blooper reel, making-of featurette and deleted scenes.

Once
An Irish musical, Once is one of this year's most acclaimed little movies. The film follows a blossoming relationship between a Dublin street musician ("Guy") and a migrant street hawker ("Girl") as they spend their first week together composing and recording music. Apparently, the actors themselves wrote the music they perform in the movie.

The DVD special features include audio commentary by the director and two main actors, a making-of featurette and a free musical download of the track "Falling Slowly."

Video of the Day: Kanye West and Spike Jonze's "We Were Once a Fairytale"

Spike Jonze is the man today. After Where the Wild Things Are took the top box office spot over the weekend, the Internet is also buzzing with this new short film he made with Kanye West. I'm on a bit of a Jonze kick myself, so I was excited to check it out - especially since I liked their combined efforts on West's video for "Flashing Lights."

This film is called "We Were Once a Fairytale," and it features a drunken West acting belligerent at a club. (Maybe that's not a stretch given the Taylor Swift incident.) Up until about the six-minute mark, the footage is actually kind of boring, but then things get bizarre, and obscure Jonze imaginings start popping up, including a creature that could be the cousin to a Wild Thing, living in West's stomach. Really.

It's interesting to say the very least, so let me know what you think after you read more.

Buzz-Worthy Video: Sneak Peek at Chuck Season 3!

I was so excited yesterday to learn that Chuck's third season premiere has been scheduled - and it's less than two months away. Still, the big two-hour kickoff can't come soon enough for me, especially after last year's epic finale. If you feel my pain, then you need to check out this sneak peek at the upcoming season. Zach Levi (sporting a new, shorter 'do) presents a very sweet message thanking his fans for all their support before showing a brand-new clip.

Even though Chuck has been given an upgrade, he's just as goofy and lovable as ever. Casey and Sarah are back undercover as our hero tries to play debonair once again - only this time he's actually got a few skills. We also get a taste for that famous sexual tension between Chuck and Sarah. I'm already counting the days so to check it out just read more.

The Office, "Shareholder Meeting": Best Lines of the Night

Looks like The Office is trying for a little economic relevance. While it sort of knocks you over the head this week - e.g. showing the Dow Jones sign - you can't blame the writers for making the story timely. Michael travels to New York for a shareholders meeting with Dwight, Andy, and Oscar in tow, but instead of being honored for his work at the branch, he steps into what's essentially a sounding board for grievances.

Lots of great quotes in this episode, so let's recap some of my favorites, shall we? (Don't worry, I've included Michael's big speech.)

"Recyclops will drown you in your over-watered lawns."-Dwight
Obviously the writers had to plug NBC's Green Week like the rest of the network, but The Office's is one of the most creative. I especially enjoyed Jim's side story about how Recyclops's fictional planet was attacked and he "vowed to destroy the planet he once loved." Oh, and his nemesis Polluticorn, which is actually a Power Rangers reference. They could've made the entire episode about Recyclops, and I would've been happy - if for nothing else, just to see Dwight rock that weird eye headband.

Dwight: "Oh, I'm sorry were you raised in a household with no consequences?"
Woman in line: "It'll just be a second."
Dwight: "Oh, if onlys and justs were candies and nuts, then every day would be Erntedankfest."
Dwight lays into the woman in the microphone line when she wants to use the bathroom, but his special comeback phrase really made me laugh. I plan on reciting it myself at least once this week. (By the way, I googled "Erntedankfest" and it's Germany's Thanksgiving. Dwight taught me something!)

Pam: "Well, I can't really imagine you yelling at anyone."
Jim: "Oh, I yell, you've heard me yell."
Pam: "Oh, okay. I've heard you exclaim, like the time you said, Hey look, we parked over here."
Jim: "Well that was apple picking day. There's no need to yell that day. You know, I was just excited to find the car. Perfect end to a perfect day."
Aw, Jim. You try so hard to be tough. But you've got to admit that putting Ryan in the closet is genius. Not only does it teach the guy a lesson, but I'm considering it payback for all of those weird getups that Ryan's been wearing recently. (Remember the fedora?!)

"We're gonna come back with a plan for you, it's a 45-day plan, 45 days to get us back on track, 45 points. It's a 45-day, 45 point, one point per day, we get the 45 points. We are back in business. And you can take that to the bank. And limo lady, we are going completely carbon neutral! I love you New York!"-Michael
Best. Speech. Ever. God forbid anyone ever give Michael Scott a mic - serves them right. Oh, and speaking of limos, check out this funny deleted scene of the boys in their ride.

"I just want to say that I believe that there are options out there. A take-a-number option like they have in a deli. What about line varieties? Like an express line for quick comments of ten words or less that could move much more efficiently. What about ropes along the lines that you can hold on to?"-Dwight
I was always welcome a ridiculous Dwight rant, and this was one of his better ones.

Rob Pattinson Cuddles Up to Emilie de Ravin in Remember Me

It's all about New Moon for Robert Pattinson these days, but once the mania goes on hiatus, it'll be time for him to start promoting a project outside the franchise. Remember Me opens in March of next year, and here are the first still photos of Pattinson with costar Emilie de Ravin. Seems a bit weird to see ~~Edward~~ Pattinson cuddling up to someone other than Kristen Stewart, but he still looks pretty hot with his signature hair (skipping the paleface makeup is an added bonus).
