Song of the Day: Andrew Bird, "Oh No"

Way back in April we got a taste of "Oh No," one of the tracks that will be included on Andrew Bird's next album, Noble Beast, from a video of Bird playing the song live. Now that it's all produced and polished, I'm love-love-loving it. It is signature Andrew Bird - whistling, strings, dark lyrics accompanying a buoyant tune - but this one's got a fun little drumbeat and hand claps and I think some tambourine. It cheered up my Monday afternoon big time, so to see if it'll do the same for you

We rarely get to peek behind-the-scenes at a musician's songwriting process. Singers and bands put out their albums, go on tour playing those songs, then return to the studio to write and record some more - and we don't hear much about it till the next album arrives, fully formed.

Andrew Bird is doing things a bit differently: Recently, he blogged for the New York Times about the process of putting together his next album. In his essay, Bird described himself as different from the singer-songwriter who comes up with lyrics and then searches for the right tune:

Since I can remember, I’ve had melodies in my head. I chew my food to them. . . . What is becoming more challenging of late is dealing with so many fully formed melodies that are unwilling to change their shape for any word. So writing lyrics becomes like running multiple code-breaking programs in your head until just the right word with just the right number of syllables, tone of vowel and finally some semblance of meaning all snap into place.

He explained how that affected his writing of one new song, "Oh No," and You Ain't No Picasso just alerted me to a live video of Bird performing the song. On top of appealing to the nerd in me who wants to know how lyrics and melodies come together, it's also just great to hear something new from Bird. After a string of absurdly silly flicks like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler showed us his softer side in The Wedding Singer. When Robbie's shallow girlfriend leaves him at the altar, the struggling wedding singer meets the bright-eyed and adorable Julia (Drew Barrymore) who is unfortunately engaged to a jerk. Throughout the movie, Robbie and Julia try to make sense of their newfound friendship, but fall in love and get married after Robbie makes the ultimate grand gesture on an airplane. This movie may be sweet, but it's also full of funny laugh-out-loud lines. Here are a few of my faves, but be sure to add yours in the comments below!

Jennifer Aniston Talks Justin Theroux and Feeling "Young Every Day" For InStyle

Jennifer Aniston slipped on a slinky peach Calvin Klein dress for the cover of InStyle's March issue. She's promoting her new comedy, Wanderlust, which hits theaters later this month. Jennifer met her boyfriend, Justin Theroux, while working on the project, and the duo have been going strong from NY to LA ever since. Jennifer opened up to the publication about what she's looking for in a man, Justin's signature style, and her age. Here's more from Jennifer Aniston in InStyle:

On her age: "You know what makes me feel old? When I see girls who are 20-something, or the new crop of actresses, and think, Aren't we kind of the same age? I don't feel my age. I feel young every day."
On finding the right partner: "Having experienced everything you don't want in a partner over time, it starts to narrow down to what you actually do want. As I get older I realize what qualities are important in love and what suits me. And what I won't settle for."
On dressing like Justin: "First of all, he has great style - it's very specific, and it has been his style forever. Has it influenced mine? No, but I know people say it has. 'Oh, look, you're dressing alike.' And I think, No I'm not. I've had this jacket for three years!"

I received this gorgeous illustrated card as a gift with purchase from Eva Juliet. I usually craft my mister's Valentines so I thought the card would make a cute framed print.

Feed them right: Eating or drinking protein soon after your workout will help repair spent muscles. The best postworkout foods are a mix of protein and carbs for energy and repair (a ratio of 4:1 carbs to protein, since carbs help replenish energy stores), so grab a yogurt or drink a chocolate milk. Want to quicken the process even more? Try a turmeric tea: the spice has anti-inflammatory properties that help accelerate muscle repair.

Get a massage: Who needs an excuse to get a massage? Sports massages feel oh-so-relieving, and there's good reason why. A new study found that getting a sports massage right after a workout decreases inflammation and boosts your muscles' oxygen intake, which helps your muscles rebuild and repair. Since it's not exactly possible to book a sports massage after every workout, make sure you keep up with your postworkout stretching and foam-rolling routine.

Glee-ful Highlights From Episode "Michael"

When I heard that Glee was performing a Michael Jackson tribute, I basically starting moonwalking across the floor, but the episode didn't quite live up to my expectations. I definitely appreciated the effort, and there were absolutely some standout performances, but I would have loved more Jackson 5 or old-school Michael disco tunes.

With so many songs crammed in, there's very little in the way of plot here. Basically, the entire episode is about the rivalry between the New Directions and the Warblers, and Sebastian emerges as the show's new villain when he hits Blaine with a jacked-up slushie.
