On the West Coast, the holidays aren't all about parties, roasts, and cookies; they're also about fresh, abundant Dungeness crabs, which are in peak supply during this time of year. But everything about the crustacean, from understanding the season to selecting the right live one, can be tricky.

North by Northwest isn't just a Hitchcock film; it's also a great way to remember how to scrub your rug. Confused? Here's a little tip. If you're dealing with a stubborn stain on a rug, don't scrub harder; scrub smarter by thinking like a compass.

We all live with people, pets, and things we love that can spell trouble for our favorite rugs. Whether it's a kiddo, a dog, or a glass of red wine, there are dangers lurking. So, if you have a spill that's in need of cleaning, try gently rubbing a cloth over the stain by using the cardinal directions: go from northeast to southwest and northwest to southeast. Rubbing gently from a variety of directions will help to lift the spill without stressing the rug's fibers.

'Tis the Season! A Primer on Pacific Salmon

American farm-raised catfish is seeing a pretty dismal season, but luckily, the same won't be said for salmon. Last week, fish and wildlife officials announced that Pacific salmon season will kick off May 1 and likely run through September - a breath of fresh air after a shortened schedule in 2010 and no season to speak of at all in 2009 and 2008.

While most of the season's salmon buzz revolves around king, or chinook salmon, keep in mind that it's only one percent of the salmon catch - there are plenty of other salmon in the sea! For a little bit of salmon species 101, read ahead.

Born on the bayou, Abita Brew Pub is in a north shore village outside New Orleans that got on the map over a century ago for its curative (gator-free) waters. Not all the liquids come carbonated. The brewery, nine miles west of town, and the brew pub are both attractions, for a tour and a sip of the nine beers. Work up your thirst – easy in summer heat – along parts of the 31-mile Tammy Trace hiking trail.

Laverne and Shirley, of ‘70s sit-com fame, bottled lesser beers of Milwaukee, but the city’s finest and most loved is from the Lakefront Brewery, which offers afternoon tours and unbeatable fish-fry Friday nights, complete with 16 beers on tap – AND live polka. Prince William and Kate Middleton were both dressed casually in navy blazers, and Kate wore jeans for their latest stop. It's been a busy week for the couple, who arrived in Canada at the beginning of the month and have been on the go with public appearances and events ever since. William and Kate went canoeing on Blachford Lake yesterday after trying their hand at street hockey earlier in the day. Kate Middleton and Prince William Are In Sync For a Canadian Canoe Ride

Prince William and Kate Middleton enjoyed another sporty adventure, a canoe ride on Blatchford Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories yesterday. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were treated to a meal of Arctic Char and helped carry a Caribu skin into a teepee to get smoked. William and Catherine were also named honorary members of the Canadian Rangers and happily donned the bright red sweatshirts as proof. The two traveled to the area via sea plane earlier in the day, after a friendly game of street hockey with some local youth in Yellowknife. The royal newlyweds time in Canada is almost done, and they'll be traveling to the United States on Friday. Today the duke and duchess are off to Calgary, where they are also squeezing in a recently added quick stop in Alberta to meet with rescue workers who fought forest fighters in the area last month.
