SAG Award Nominees Announced!

The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced today, and as always, I loved seeing more leading indicators for the Oscars and the fun "best performance by a cast" nominees. I'm glad to see Abigail Breslin and Alan Arkin up for "Little Miss Sunshine," but can we please stop nominating Megan Mullally for "Will & Grace" now?

The 13th Annual awards will air live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, January 28. Until then, here's a list of who is up for what.

Golden Globe Nominations Breakdown: TV

Sure, everyone talks about the Golden Globe nominations as Oscar predictors, but they're also a great barometer for the fall TV season, giving us an early look at which shows critics think deserve recognition - and which are tanking. This year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave props to a few new shows and a few old favorites but skipped over a few that I thought were sure bets. Here is BuzzSugar's breakdown of the Golden Globe nominations for TV. (To see my movie breakdown, click here.)

AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL
I'm loving the nomination of America Ferrera from "Ugly Betty". She's been charming so far as the aggressively unstylish magazine assistant, and she might actually have a chance of winning here, if Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman split the "Desperate Housewives" ballots and voters don't want to let Mary-Louise Parker repeat for "Weeds."

OH, SANDRA
A year after taking home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress on TV, Sandra Oh got snubbed. Maybe there was only room for one "Grey's Anatomy" lady, and Katherine Heigl does deserve some recognition for her work as line-crossing, Denny Duquette-loving Izzie. But if the Globes could reward two "Housewives" in the Best Actress category, why not two for "Grey's"?

EX-"FRIEND" ALERT
So Matthew Perry didn't get nominated for "Studio 60," but he's still a contender at the Globes for "The Ron Clark Story," a TNT original picture that I ... have never heard of.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS
Kiefer Sutherland got his zillionth (OK, his fifth) best actor nomination for "24," and perennial comedy favorite Tony Shalhoub from "Monk" is back for a fourth time after being passed over last year. Neither has won for several years, though.

SEEING DOUBLE, AGAIN
Everyone's talking about Leo vs. Leo and Clint vs. Clint, but what about Helen vs. Helen? In addition to her film nomination for "The Queen," British dame Helen Mirren also got two nods in the Best Actress, Miniseries, or Movie category: One for the HBO miniseries "Elizabeth I," which garnered her an Emmy earlier this year, and one for the final installment of the PBS miniseries "Prime Suspect." That means Mirren herself nabbed more nominations than the casts of most entire TV shows, which is pretty darn impressive. But I'm most excited because now we have triple the chance of seeing her give yet another charming and weirdly controversial acceptance speech.

THE FRESHMEN
The Globes tend to reward new shows, so it's no surprise to see a few newbies snag high-profile mentions. First-season standouts "Heroes" and "Big Love" could be surprise winners in the Best Drama Series category, and "Ugly Betty" could pull an upset in the comedy competition. But a Golden Globe isn't always the good-luck charm a first-year series needs: "Commander in Chief" tanked and was ultimately canceled despite its nomination and star Geena Davis's win last year.

UPSET WATCH
Michael C. Hall missed out on most of the big awards when he was on "Six Feet Under," but his starring role as a vigilante serial killer on "Dexter" could snag him a win this time. Just looking at Alec Baldwin makes me laugh, so I wouldn't be surprised if the "30 Rock" star upset Tony Shalhoub and Steve Carrell in the Best Actor, Musical or Comedy category.

Golden Globe Nominations Announced!

Twilight Leads the People's Choice Awards Nominations

The 36th annual People's Choice Awards nominees are here, and last year's Twilight is leading the charge! American Idol's Kris Allen was among the announcers this morning for the nominees, which also include lots of nods for The Proposal - but of course, everyone's favorite bloodsucking love story landed in many categories, including favorite on-screen movie team.

Why didn't they look to 2009's New Moon? Because last year's nominations debuted before the first movie in the Twilight saga.

Movie Preview: Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart

The trailer for Crazy Heart notes that both stars Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have been nominated for Oscars, and the solemn, raw tone of the film looks an awful lot like awards show bait for these two big talents. Jeff Bridges stars as Bad Blake, a grizzled, hard-livin', lovin', and drinkin' country singer/songwriter who's known for his amazing music, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the journalist he eventually falls for.

We don't see a ton of plot in the trailer, but the story seems like a familiar one, complete with introspection and a soft country anthem that fits the title. Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall also star in the film, which features original songs by celebrated songwriter T-Bone Burnett.

The Office, "Murder": Best Lines of the Night and Video!

Well, I do declare! This week's The Office was silly good fun. Distraught over rumors of bankruptcy, Michael suggests that the employees engage in a murder mystery game called Belles, Bourbon and Bullets to keep their spirits up. Pam's recent bad attitude seems to lift as she gets into character, and Andy uses the opportunity to ask Erin on a date. (I can't wait for when those two finally hook up!)

Ready to take a look at some of my favorite quips from the episode (and share your own in the comments)?

Jim: "With all due respect to everyone here, I think the most worthy opponent of you is you."
Dwight: "That is correct. Unless there happen to be measles present."
How awesomely ridiculous is the opening scene where Dwight tries to fight himself during his own karate instructional?! That right there is why Rainn Wilson gets nominated for Emmys.

Check out Erin delivering yet another great quote this week! I'm curious to see what the writers do with her character, especially now that they're setting up this will-they-or-won't-they thing with Andy that's slightly reminiscent of another Office couple.

"You can all have jobs at Schrute farms as human scarecrows. It doesn't pay much, and you can't unionize."-Dwight
Leave it to Dwight to concoct a plan when news of the company's money loss hits the Scranton branch.

"Operation got me through my vasectomy, i.e. my operation. I don't think I would've been able to endure my breakup with Holly had it not been for Toss Across."-Michael
Michael explains his use of board games as a coping mechanism to Jim, but my favorite part is when he plays "Lullaby" by Sean Mullins on his computer to wallow in his sadness. Anyone else remember that song? Love the '90s nostalgia!

Kevin: "Now do the Swedish Chef."
Andy: "I'm not familiar, what province is he from?"
Kevin: "He lives on Sesame Street, dumbass."
Andy does such a good job with his Savannah accent using his "molasses" technique that oddball Kevin asks him to talk like the Swedish Chef from Sesame Street. But I have to mention Creed -I was dying when he shows up to the office, hears about the "murder," and speeds off in his car! Also, kudos to the crime scene with Meredith and to Oscar for putting on the strangest accent I have ever heard. Check him out in this video:

"Today is the hardest I have worked in a long, long time."-Michael
Sad thing is, Michael's probably telling the truth.

So what's your assessment of the evening? It sounds like there are tough times ahead for everyone, since David Wallace says the company will be out of money by the end of the year. Buzz In: Which Animated Movie Is Most Oscar-Worthy?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a press release today, announcing that 20 films have been submitted for Best Animated Film consideration at this year's Oscars. This means there could be five movies competing at the awards show in March. (In the history of the category, there have typically been only three.) So who is up for the honor?

Some are obvious choices. Up, for example, comes as no surprise thanks to its huge accolades. I also think Coraline stands a chance, as well as Fantastic Mr. Fox (look for my review on Friday!). But Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel seems like a long shot - even though it hasn't hit theaters yet, so I'm just making an early prediction. (Sorry, Alvin.)

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

Tuesday means it's time to rev up your entertainment engine with new releases in music and new DVDs to add to your Netflix queue. I've checked out today's movie offerings and have some recommendations for the movies that are worth your rental time below.

This Summer's hit from Pixar is as tear-jerking as it is funny and light, and equally entertaining for kids and adults. Up is a story about an old man, voiced by Ed Asner, who attaches his home to balloons to escape his rapidly changing neighborhood.

I loved the emotional and original story, and wouldn't be surprised to see it nab a Best Picture nomination. The DVD has a ton of fun extras like cartoon shorts Partly Cloudy and Dug's Special Mission, and the expected making-of featurettes.

The Ugly Truth

Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler play opposite each other in this romantic comedy that hinges on the notion that women want love, while men only want sex. I couldn't find much romance, though; in its place are cliches and some truly cringe-worthy moments.

But if you're one of the many who loves Gerard Butler, you may enjoy his boorish behavior. DVD extras include deleted scenes, two alternate endings, director commentary, and a gag reel.

Ashton Kutcher is just a gigolo in the indie Spread. OK, maybe he's not exactly a gigolo, but it's pretty close - his character Nikki hangs around wealthy women like Anne Heche, exchanging good lovin' for a place to stay. When he unintentionally falls for a mysterious girl, his sugar mama ways are challenged.

Kutcher's role is more dramatic than what he usually takes on, and the love scenes are supposedly pretty steamy. Included in the DVD's extras are a feature called "The World According to Nikki," commentary with Kutcher (who also produced the movie), and deleted scenes.

Buzz Interview With the Cast of Precious, Part 3: Gabourey Sidibe

Precious begins rolling out in theaters this Friday, and we'll finally see if it lives up to its Oscar hype. One performance that the Academy will definitely be talking about comes from newcomer Gabby Sidibe, who carries the film as the title character.

Playing an abused, pregnant teen is the sort of responsibility and heavy subject matter that could make even pros crack under pressure - so how is she coping with her big screen debut? I've already showed you my interviews with Paula Patton and director Lee Daniels, but for this third installment in my Precious series, check out my chat with the actress who already has Oprah and the rest of Hollywood buzzing.

On landing the role: "When I got hired, I was pretty sure it was just a joke. I wasn't an actress - I was a receptionist before this. I was like, there's no way they're interested in me. Since then, I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop, but this joke has gone pretty far!"
On how she handled the first-time pressure: "I was sure I would look like a complete novice, like I didn't belong there, or that I didn't fit in, but once I got there and saw all the people involved - grips, electric, camera operators - I thought, okay, there are a lot of people whose paychecks are on my back, so I can't spaz out. So immediately all of my nervousness fell away from me, and I had a job to do."

On the award buzz: "It's weird, because I have no idea what it is to be a part of an Oscar-winning film or any kind of accolade-winning film, because this is my first go-around. So I just take every day as a gift! I'm thankful that anyone sees the film and feels something - and if the awards come, they come, or if they don't, they don't. But what I've done so far, I'm absolutely proud of myself."
On working with Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz: "It was insane. They're all people that I absolutely idolize. The first time Lenny Kravitz came on set, I was standing very, very still, and I knew he was around, and I couldn't wait for him to come upstairs. Then he did, and it was like, well, there is Lenny Kravitz. There was nothing to be scared about, because he was very cool. And Mariah, I met her the night before we started shooting. She was like the last to be hired, so we had done most of the movie. I kind of felt like a veteran - Mariah is stepping on to my turf. [laughs]"

On her next project: "It's a Sundance Lab Film [Yelling to the Sky], and it stars Zoe Kravitz. I play a girl who is really loud and obnoxious, the queen of the school. It's really fun because it's so far from Precious - I like playing the bad girl! And the film has a first-time director, Victoria Mahoney, who's a lady. The DP is a female, the camera operator is female, so it's all females. It's empowering in a weird way. I've never been all super feminist, but it's really cool."
On her new career: "It's so weird to have a 'Hollywood career.' I just want to do things that make me happy. There are so many people that I look up to as far as actresses go, but I just want to go as far as I can."

Love her! I'll be keeping a close eye on Gabby when the film opens, especially once award nominations start flowing in. Will you be checking out Precious?
