What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

Looking to add some new DVDs to your entertainment library? It's Tuesday which means there's a slew of movies hitting shelves, including these three releases.

Terminator Salvation

Christian Bale plays John Connor in this latest installment in the Terminator franchise. The film follows an ex-con turned robot (Sam Worthington) who meets up with Connor in the hopes of saving Connor's father (who is currently a teenager), and therefore the human race. Confusing? Yes. But strange time-traveling aside, my biggest complaint is that I miss the humor from the previous films. Still, it's a Netflix possibility thanks to some solid action sequences and Worthington's standout performance (not to mention he's nice to look at).

If you're a die-hard Terminator fan, you may consider the special three-disc Blu-Ray edition, which includes a Director's Cut and behind-the-scenes featurettes.

Paper Heart

Written by actress/comedian Charlyne Yi, the part documentary, part scripted Paper Heart trails Yi as she interviews a mix of scientists, kids, and even an Elvis impersonator in the hopes of finding out what love is. (And just why she hasn't found it.) Matters get complicated when she meets actor Michael Cera during the course of filming and the two start dating. While their adorable-but-awkward interactions and the puppet-like cartoon sequences may be a bit too cutesy for some, it's a solid pick if you like sugary rom-coms. (Yi even won a screenwriting award at Sundance for it).

Special features include a music video for "Heaven" which Cera and Yi co-wrote for the film.

Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian

In this sequel to Night at the Museum, Ben Stiller returns as security guard Larry Daley. This time, he's trying to sneak into the Smithsonian to rescue Jedidiah (Owen Wilson) and Octavius (Steve Coogan) who were accidentally shipped there. The first Night at the Museum was fun - and you have Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart this time around - so I wouldn't mind sitting down to watch this with my little cousins during the holiday season. (Plus, I'm a sucker for Hank Azaria who puts on a goofy voice as Egyptian pharaoh Kamunrah.)

Bonus material includes an alternate ending and a gag reel, which should be especially entertaining given the cast of comics.

Box Office: The Hangover Hangs On to the Top Spot

The Hangover had another fantastic weekend at the box office. The comedy came in at No. 1 with an estimated $33.4 million, and is now being called a bona fide box office phenomenon. Pixar's Up also did very well, coming in second place with an estimated $30.5 million over the weekend. According to Variety, "It's unusual for two films like Hangover and Up to simultaneously have such solid holds domestically."

Meanwhile, The Taking of Pelham 123 debuted at No. 3 and earned a solid $25 million, followed by Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost took the fifth spot while Eddie Murphy's newest comedy, Imagine That, had a fairly dismal debut at No. 6.

Up Soars at the Box Office

Pixar's Up had a great weekend at the box office, coming in at No. 1 with a whopping $68.2 million. That makes Up the third biggest Pixar debut ever (out of ten) behind The Incredibles and Finding Nemo. It's also worth noting that Up's debut bested Wall-E, which opened last year to $63.1 million.

Interestingly, this particular box office win "validates Disney’s decision to let its Pixar unit put creativity before commerce. Some Wall Street analysts . . . had predicted the film would have a difficult time attracting children because of its geriatric action hero." Hurray for putting story first!

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian continued to do well and scored second place over the weekend. Drag Me to Hell debuted at No. 3 followed by Terminator Salvation and Star Trek.

Box Office: Night at the Museum Beats Terminator!

Ben Stiller's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian blew Terminator Salvation out of the water over Memorial Day weekend, earning an estimated $70 million.

However, despite coming in second place, McG's effort to revive the popular sci-fi franchise is still a success, earning a solid $53.8 million. That's impressive considering Terminator's less-than-glowing reviews, as well as competition in the action-adventure genre from Star Trek, which came in third place.

Angels & Demons came in at No. 4 followed by Dance Flick which debuted at No. 5.

Ben and Owen Team Up For Another Night at the Museum

The stars of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian reunited on the red carpet last night for the premiere at the National Air and Space Museum in DC. Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, and Owen Wilson took their characters to Washington this time around, with Amy Adams adding a feminine touch to the cast. Last night Owen dished about how much fun it is to make movies with his longtime buddy Ben, saying, "It's unbelievable. This is like I think the 10th movie that we've worked on together. And then we're working on another one too coming up. Who knew way back when, when I was in The Cable Guy, that that was gonna lead to us kind of teaming up and being in the same movies so much." We'll get to see if Ben and Owen still have that box office magic when the movie hits theaters next Friday.

According to Variety, Josh Hartnett will be starring in a London stage production of the movie Rain Man, taking on the role originally played by Tom Cruise.
Rapper Young Jeezy will join the cast of Ice Cube's comedy Janky Promoters, Billboard writes.

8 Frugal Summer Vacation Ideas

If you're thinking of forgoing your usual Summer travel plans due to high prices, you should consider these frugal trip ideas from Wise Bread.

The sky is brighter, the air is warming up, and the layers of clothes are getting peeled off. That can only mean one thing - summer is near.

One of the things that I love most about going on vacation is the chance to break out of my everyday routine, eat crappy foods guilt-free, and stay up blissfully late watching as much trashy reality TV as I please. Setting aside daily responsibilities, trying new things, being in a different space, and having carefree fun is refreshing. But while it’d be nice to go to Fiji or another distant tropical paradise, that just isn't reality for a lot of us.

So what do you do when money is tight, you don’t want to get further into debt, and you really need a vacation? You still take a vacation, but just a frugal one. One that your budget will love. Here are eight frugal summer vacation ideas to get you going.

1. The All-American, Almighty Road-Trip Vacation

About 10 years ago, my husband was able to travel through 30 different states in the span of a month and a half with a friend in a $400 1982 Chevy Sprint. It’s an experience he’ll never forget, and while gas prices do get high in the summer, the road trip is still one of the cheapest options for frugal vacations. Grab a map, pack a large cooler, stop at grocery stores along the way, sing cheesy songs, tell stories you’ve never told before, watch the sun rise and set, and make yourself some memories. (This can be combined with the “I Had No Idea There Were Over 400 National Parks” vacation below, if you’re feeling adventurous.)

2. The Infamous Staycation Vacation

Set a time frame. If you can only get two to three days off from work (or less), that’s OK! This is how you do it - turn off the phones, put an auto reply on your email, turn off the computer (and really keep it off), don’t check your usual social media feeds, and really allow yourself a break from everyday life and the technology that comes along with it. Then go to the grocery store and get sundae supplies: ice cream, candy toppings, hot fudge, caramel, and whipped cream, and why not throw in some cherries too? You are on vacation after all! Rent those guilty-pleasure movies you’ve been wanting to see, and settle in for a movie marathon. Those books and magazines that have been stacking up? This is the time to read them! Those museum exhibits you’ve been dying to see but just don’t have the time for? Go check ‘em out! Hanging with friends on a patio on a random Tuesday night? Go for it! The point is to have fun, indulge in some pleasures you normally don’t get to, and get out of your normal routine.
