Chuck Rundown: Episode Four, "Chuck vs. the Cougars"

When I first saw the title of this week's Chuck, I assumed it would have something to do with a hot older woman (the return of Melinda Clarke's character, perhaps?). Instead, this turned out to be the much-anticipated episode that sent Chuck and Sarah back to Sarah's high school, with a mission involving Sarah's teenage nemesis (Nicole Richie). It was a little Grosse Pointe Blank and a lot awesome, so to talk about it, just read more.

So who is Sarah Walker, really? For a while in this episode, we (and Chuck) feel tantalizingly close to finding out, courtesy of Heather Chandler (hee!), the popular cheerleader to Sarah's high school nerd, who pops up in the Orange Orange one day and squeals with excitement over seeing "Jenny Burton." (Chuck: "Of all the tart, Asian-influenced frozen yogurt shops in all the towns in all the world, you walk into hers?") Chuck really thinks he's hit the jackpot when Heather's husband (played by Ben Savage - again, awesome) becomes the focus of their next mission, requiring a trip to Sarah's high school. I loved watching Chuck seize on the few bits of information he thought he now knew, asking Heather if "Jenny" grew up in the fun "house/condo/apartment" and saying he only has "364 and a quarter days to go" before figuring out her birthday.

Of course, things aren't that simple: Sarah is Jenny Burton . . . and Katie O'Connell, and Rebecca Franco, and probably more. She's the daughter of a con man and spent high school assuming alternate identities and being the kid whose dad was in prison. I give props to Yvonne Strahovski for how well she's playing Sarah's tender moments, and I appreciate the way this ties into Sarah's overall story, with the agent spotting Sarah's mad knife-throwing skills in the woods and suggesting she consider the CIA.

Meanwhile, the case is awfully convoluted, and I think my head will explode sorting out what led Heather to Sarah and resulted in their shower throwdown. So let's focus on the big things: Ben Savage's character thinking Chuck is a hardcore agent nicknamed Mad Dog is a great twist, and Casey really runs with it ("I parked in his spot once. This scar reminds me every day: Don't mess with Mad Dog."). And Nicole Richie not only holds her own in the acting department, but also proves to be a pretty competent fighter, getting knocked out only when Sarah finally dumps a big stone cougar on Heather's head - just in time to wander back into the auditorium, soaked and bloodied, and be named reunion queen. Also, "Smack My B*tch Up" is nothing short of an inspired musical choice.

Some other thoughts:

Lester's "make me an offer" method was destined to end badly (Morgan: "That's part of the fun!"), but it was a great setup for a high school-style kegger in the Buy More that just made me think of Empire Records.
I love that Casey's Buy More pricing gun is . . . a gun.
It's funny to watch everybody downplay their skills (Heather just happened to pick up some karate, Sarah can expertly fillet a fish thanks to all those knife skills classes) - except for Chuck, who claims he took out the baddies in the bathroom thanks to "a self-defense thingie I took at the Y."
I don't think I'm ever, ever going to get sick of jokes with Big Mike's marlin. Also, does this mean the assistant manager job is open?

TV Tonight: Nicole Richie Fights Tough on Chuck

If stunt casting is a way to get more people to watch a show, then let's hope it works tonight for NBC's hilarious Chuck. Nicole Richie makes her long-awaited guest appearance as a high school acquaintance of Sarah's, and all signs point to it being awesome. Here's a short list of reasons why it should be great:

Richie's character is named Heather Chandler - ha!
Heather turns up suddenly in Burbank and reveals a ton of information that could blow Sarah's cover, including her name and hometown.
Through her, we get flashbacks to an awkward, mousy, braces-wearing version of Sarah.
Heather was a total mean girl in high school, but she ended up marrying a nerdy classmate, played by Ben Savage.
There's going to be a fight scene between Nicole and Sarah in the gym showers at their high school reunion.

I Spy Some Chuck Season Two Info!

Of all the shows affected by the writers' strike, NBC's Chuck took one of the hardest hits. The show was just really hitting its stride when the strike cut it short, and its final two episodes aired in a sort of bizarre Chuck sandwich. My biggest question for the show heading into season two was whether people would even really remember it exists.

But Josh Schwartz, Zachary Levi, and company are setting out to make sure we remember the show Schwartz calls "my little baby." With a new framework for the series, and a bevy of guest stars - including Nicole Richie, who gets into a shower fight with Sarah - lined up for appearances, Chuck is looking to be back with a bang. There will be no hesitation jumping right in to what's been happening with Chuck since we last saw him. "Our 'Previously On' is Chuck being dangled out of a window by Michael Clarke Duncan, telling the story of how he got there," Schwartz said.
After we're all caught up, the show will move quickly into determining Chuck's fate. Once the new Intersect is up, Chuck won't be so necessary anymore, and Casey will be asked to "disappear" him - a mission complicated by the fact that Casey is actually starting to like our nerdy antihero. The whole season will explore the show's mythology a bit more, with deeper story arcs to go along with the missions and villains of the week.

Another thing Chuck will have: romance, and not least because Chuck's college girlfriend Jill (played by Jordana Brewster) will be back in the picture. "We had planned to bring her back at the end of last season if it hadn't been for the strike," Schwartz said. "It's going to be a huge arc for us and really set the show off in a new direction." As for Sarah's feelings? "I love me a love triangle," Schwartz said. "This is somebody who has a legitimate threat - she is beautiful and cool and smart and dynamic. She gets some information about what Chuck may actually do for a living, which means he can have like a real relationship with her. So it's a real threat to the [Chuck/Sarah] romance."
Chuck's also going nuts with the guest stars - not just Richie and Brewster but also John Larroquette, Tony Hale, Michael Strahan, Michael Clarke Duncan, Melinda Clarke, and Ben Savage, who plays Richie's husband in the fourth episode. Oddly enough, I may be most excited about Strahan's episode, if only because it will introduce us to the Mighty Jocks, the Sports Authority-esque sales team that shares strip mall space with the Buy More. But there's also the hilarious idea of Larroquette as Roan Montgomery, legendary seducer of women, who may have had a relationship with hardened government operative General Beckman.
Sarah's getting a new cover job and a new cover uniform, Yvonne Strahovski told me - and while she was mum on the details (other than that she prefers the color scheme to her Weinerlicious getup), Levi said Sarah's newly employed at a Pinkberry-esque frozen yogurt joint.
Schwartz said there will be "11 percent more Captain Awesome," and he'll take his shirt off within the first seven minutes of the first episode. (Is that a threat or a promise?)

Nicole Richie Brings Her Mean Girl Skills to Chuck

How I Met Your Mother got Britney, Ugly Betty got Lindsay, and now Chuck is getting . . . Nicole?

That's right: Nicole Richie is headed to NBC's spy comedy for one episode in the Fall. And she might want to have a chat with Lindsay first, because Richie's role will be something Lindsay knows a little something about: the mean girl.

Richie's character will be "a snarky and spiteful girl" who spent her high school years torturing Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski). Richie's character and Sarah will butt heads again when Sarah's forced to attend her 10-year high school reunion for a mission - with Chuck as her date.

In a press release from NBC and Warner Bros., which produces the show, Chuck's co-creator Josh Schwartz said: "Nicole auditioned for the part and was very funny. This role is a great opportunity for her to show off her comedic skills and be diabolically evil and kick some butt. It's going to be really fun."

Richie hasn't done a ton of acting - unless you count The Simple Life - with a role in the high school comedy Kids in America and small guest stints on 8 Simple Rules and American Dreams among her only credits. But it seems like Richie should be able to pull off the spiteful, mean-girl thing pretty well, no?

TV Tonight: Nicole Without Paris on "Letterman"

Unfortunately for Dave, it just wasn't in the cards for him to get both halves of the notorious Paris/Nicole duo on tonight's show. The more diminutive starlet, Nicole, will be in the house to wax philosophical about "The Simple Life Goes to Camp," but the heiress who invented Famous For No Reason, Paris, is stuck behind bars.

While Nicole will surely keep things squarely on the ridiculous side of the spectrum, it's just not the same level of (sometimes unintentional) hilarity as when the girls are both around. Tune in to see how many different words for "jail" Dave will work into the broadcast! My guess is six.

Bad Idea of the Week #2: Nicole Richie to Help Overweight Kids

Some weeks, there are just too many bad ideas. Yesterday, for instance, I thought the new reality show called "Baby Borrowers" sounded bad, but next to this news, it's downright highbrow.

For the fifth season of "The Simple Life" on E!, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton will be camp counselors, and apparently, part of that job entails counseling overweight kids at a "weight loss" camp. An E! spokesperson reportedly told Us Weekly:

"The camp has five different themes. Each week will be a different theme. And yes, one week is a weight loss/fitness camp. It's not a fat camp."

Yeah, right. Whatever you choose to call it, E!, the fact remains: a frighteningly thin woman who clearly has weight issues and who recently didn't think drinking water was all that important is supposed to offer children guidance regarding health and wellness.

Even if the weight-loss camp thing turns out not to be true - though I wouldn't put it past E! - the thought of Paris and Nicole counseling kids about anything is pretty scary. What do you guys think?
