Paul: The Buddy Movie Goes Extraterrestrial

In Paul, British comedians and frequent costars Nick Frost and Simon Pegg reunite for the first time since 2007's Hot Fuzz. Frost and Pegg costar as Clive and Graeme, two sci-fi fanboys on vacation in America to catch Comic-Con before heading off on an alien-inspired road trip.

The buddies are having the time of their lives stopping by UFO-related landmarks, but their trip takes a momentous turn when they come upon an actual alien. Named Paul, the little green guy is trying to escape a department of the government that has held him captive for a few years and now wants to harvest his brain for research. Voiced by Seth Rogen, Paul is a CGI creation in the form of the big-eyed, big-headed aliens humans have imagined for years.

Hot on their trail are a number of trackers: Jason Bateman is a Men in Black-type with very little sense of humor, Bill Hader and Joe Lo Truglio are a couple of clueless agents who don't know they're following an alien, and David Koechner is a redneck out to get the boys for being foreign. The ensemble of funnymen and cameos by other favorites, like Jane Lynch and Blythe Danner, adds another dimension of fun.

However, Paul is not necessarily all it could be. To find out what I liked and what I didn't, just

Rogen pulls off a feat of making Paul a real character, imbuing him with more than just a voice. Paul has distinctive, laid-back mannerisms and a friendly, full personality that makes him more than just a cartoonish afterthought. On the flip side, Kristen Wiig isn't used to her full potential. As Ruth, a religious zealot who has her mind blown by the existence of Paul, the very funny actress is squandered. As Ruth embraces a new lifestyle of doing what she wants, Wiig gets one running joke: cussing. Though her phrasing is often very creative, it gets old fast.

Paul caters to a very specific audience, to a fault. If you're not attuned to all pop culture references, you may wonder why the rest of the crowd is tittering at a seemingly insignificant line. In general, the movie is often funny, though never truly hilarious. And once you get to the climax and final act, the jokes drop off in favor of wrapping up the story. At that point, it becomes clear that the plot is paper thin, and you get bored waiting for the resolution.

The problem Frost/Pegg fans may have with this installment is that it's grossly inferior to Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. In those films, the concepts and plots are both more inspired and edgier. While Paul shares the brand of humor of its predecessors, it's only a mildly satisfying fix for fans.

They star in the alien-themed movie alongside Seth Rogen, who plays the title extraterrestrial, and the hilarious duo of Bill Hader and Joe Lo Truglio. A tea-drinking Nick and Simon talked about hatching their latest script idea and their own superpower aspirations, also sharing about some future plot ideas like something based on the joys of crabbing along the English coast. Simon, who also stars in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, weighed in about working with the "amazing" and "thoroughly committed" Tom Cruise - check out their hilarious banter below.

New, Full-Length Paul Trailer Is Here - And It's Funny!

When the first teaser for Paul came out, I was disappointed that it wasn't funnier. But I'm relieved to see this longer trailer for the flick, which makes it look so much better. If the first trailer was a primer to introduce you to the premise - two nerdy protagonists, played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, visit Area 51 and meet alien Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) - then this trailer actually shows off the humor you'd expect from this group. Not to mention that you also get to see more of the awesome cast, like Bill Hader, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, and Kristen Wiig. Watch the new clip when you

Paul Trailer: Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Take In Alien Seth Rogen

It's a good thing I love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost so much, otherwise I might be more dismissive of this first trailer for Paul. The British comedy pair, best known for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, star as two nerdy best friends on a road trip to Area 51 in the hopes of seeing an alien . . . and I almost hate to say that they get their wish. When they have a close encounter with little CGI extraterrestrial Paul, voiced by Seth Rogen, it's up to these sci-fi fans to protect him. If you watched this teaser only and didn't know anything about the project - like, that it's directed by Superbad's Greg Mottola and has one of the funniest casts ever assembled - you may be a little put off.

That said, I have an enormous amount of faith in Frost and Pegg, who wrote the script, and even though you barely get to see any of the other supporting actors (like Jane Lynch, Kristen Wiig, and Bill Hader), I've still got hope. While I winced a little through this first footage, I also giggled at the end. If the movie is full of that kind of silly humor, then I'm on board.

Very Funny Cast Signs Up For Mottola's Paul

So much about this movie news is exciting. First, we've got a great, funny director in Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland). Secondly, there's a script written by the excellent and hilarious British duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Spaced). And now, there's a great group of comedic actors rounding out the cast: Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, and Jane Lynch (I love that she keeps getting more projects these days!). Here's more on the project, titled Paul:

Pegg and Frost, who wrote the script, will play two science-fiction fanatics on a road trip whose conspiracy dreams come true when they trek to Area 51 and encounter the title character, an escaped alien. Rogen will provide the voice of the alien.

It's not my ultimate comedic dream team, but I see nothing wrong at all with this group of funny people. I can't wait for Paul to invade theaters. Oh man, that's terrible. That's it. I'm done!

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost Working on American Road Trip Movie

Oh, how I love these guys! Anyone who has seen Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz is probably familiar with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's hilarious, satiric ways, and fans of the duo will be happy to know that they're back at work on another comedy. This time the premise and location are both distinctly American. Pegg wouldn't reveal too much to MTV Movies Blog, but he did say this: "It's called Paul and it’s a road movie about two British geeks in America."

Also, as a twist on their usual relationship in their films, Pegg won't be playing the one ranking on Frost's character all the time. According to Pegg, "I'm the bitch in this one. This time Simon’s the bitch!"

I love these guys. I was so looking forward to seeing Pegg soon in Run, Fat Boy, Run alongside Hank Azaria, but apparently the film's release date has been moved from October to March. One website has a supposed quote from Pegg stating that the weekend in October when Fat Boy was supposed to open proved too risky with Steve Carell's Dan in Real Life also coming out. I'm so bummed by this news! I was looking forward to watching that fat boy run next month.

Movie Preview: Hot Fuzz

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never seen Shaun of the Dead, because after merely watching the trailer for Hot Fuzz, I'm ready to declare filmmakers Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright two of Britain's most valuable exports. In their new comedy, which hits theaters this Friday, April 20, Wright (who also directed the best fake trailer in Grindhouse) and Pegg are lampooning an oft-ridiculed world - small-town cops - with wholly original humor.

Pegg plays a London police officer who is so good at his job that his colleagues resent him, so he's shipped off to the virtually crime-free village of Sandford and paired with a bumbling partner (Nick Frost). Not surprisingly, it turns out there might be more afoot in Sandford then expected. The movie also co-stars a roster of talented Brits, including Bill Nighy and Steve Coogan. But really, you should just watch the trailer and have a laugh, so
