As a city with so much personality and penchant for possibility, it's no surprise that the follow-up to Paris, Je t'aime heads to New York. New York, I Love You is a tale of the connections and personal missteps that occur every single day in the city that never sleeps. It plays out like a movie version of a song mash-up: some story lines are linear and independent of the rest while other characters wander in and out of each other's lives.

Based on Susanne Bier's 2004 film and directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father), Brothers tells the story of a young man (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who "comforts his older brother's wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan." The older brother is played by Tobey Maguire and the wife is played by Natalie Portman, and from the looks of the trailer, the wife ends up getting very close with her brother-in-law, which causes some tension when her husband returns home from war.
For whatever reason, I have a hard time buying Portman as a mother of two but otherwise the movie looks intense and heart-wrenching.

Director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, The Fountain, Requiem For a Dream) may be going from working with Mickey Rourke to directing Natalie Portman in the supernatural thriller Black Swan. Portman's delicate frame is well-suited for this story set within the world of New York City ballet. Apparently those who have read the script claim it's a "spine-tingler" that's not unlike The Others "in which viewers are left to discern what's real and what's imagined."

To sort of steal a line from Zoolander, this casting news makes me think, "That Joseph Gordon-Levitt is so hot right now." He's currently the talk of the independent film town thanks to the good buzz surrounding his upcoming movie 500 Days of Summer, and he just booked a role in Christopher Nolan's next project. Now, he and Rainn Wilson have signed up for a movie titled Hesher that already has Natalie Portman on board as a star and producer.

Paramount has won the rights to the Leanne Shapton book Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry, and plans to develop the story as a romantic comedy with Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman in the lead roles. Here's more:
The book takes the form of Sotheby's-like estate auction catalog, with 325 entries and photographs depicting items that reveal the private moments and the rise and fall of a four-year relationship between the fictitious couple Hal Morris (a 40ish photographer) and Lenore Doolan, (a New York Times food columnist in her late 20s).
The project will be developed as a romantic comedy, with Pitt to play Morris, and Portman to play Doolan.

Before being known to most as Natalie Portman's boyfriend, Devendra Banhart was famous in certain circles for turning out interesting neo-folk music and has been a mainstay in the independent music scene for a little while now.
His new video for his Spanish language song "Carmensita," has people talking partly because Ms. Portman's in it but also because some people aren't sure how awesome this cheeky swipe at Bollywood-style productions is.
