Movie Night: Celebrating Mexico

As Cinco de Mayo approaches, I figured now would be a good opportunity to plan a movie night with some of my favorite movies having to do with Mexico. I left off Quinceanera because I've already recommended it, but that is one of my favorite films in this genre. Rent it!

Frida
Salma Hayek's performance as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is astounding. The film follows Kahlo's very turbulent life: from a debilitating accident, to her troubled relationship with Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), to her reputation as a communist and lesbian, to her untimely death. The film beautifully captures the great passions and terrible pains that influenced Kahlo's artwork.

read more My Family Admittedly I didn't take into account Jennifer Lopez's performance in My Family when I recently questioned her acting talent. The film is a heartwarming portrayal of Jose and Maria (Lopez plays a young Maria), first-generation Mexican-Americans who build a life together in California in the 1930s. As time moves steadily onward, they face discrimination, police corruption and deportation, yet they also watch as their family expands and they raise six children. The focus shifts to their son Jimmy (Jimmy Smits) who marries a Salvadoran woman to help her stay in the country. By the 1980s, the third generation in the family is struggling to assimilate to modern American youth culture. There is rarely a dull or empty moment in this film about a family's unconditional love for one another. Y Tu Mama Tambien This film is in Spanish with English subtitles, and it is well worth the "read." Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron wrote and directed the riveting, sensual tale about what happens when you take two strapping young men and an older woman on a road trip near Mexico City. Let me give you a hint at the answer: some sex, jealousy, fighting - all the good stuff. Gael Garcia Bernal plays one of the young men and he is unbelievably good-looking. The film provides an excellent - if often difficult - look at Mexico in all its beauty and heartache. Source and source

"He Won't Buy Me an Engagement Ring"

My boyfriend had been hinting to me about getting married and starting a family. He has been divorced before but no kids. I don't know if he's joking or not but I think he's trying to tell me that he won't get a diamond ring for me. He told me he thinks a diamond ring is pointless because it's expensive and there's no meaning behind it. He would rather use the money for something else. My boyfriend is not cheap. He's generous and spoils me. We love each other very much but this is bothering the hell out of me. I have told him that a diamond ring is something that symbolizes marriage, eternity, and I like jewelry and diamonds!

I am 25 and he is 35 and this will be my first marriage if we do tie the knot. I know the ring isn't the most important thing in this relationship but it's part of tradition and I like jewelry.

Khloé Kardashian Odom Tells Us Women and Girls Shouldn't Be Shy About Their Bodies

While Kris Jenner is making headlines for promoting a very adult product - arousal oils to be exact - her daughter Khloé Kardashian Odom is appealing to a younger audience. Khloé has teamed up again with U by Kotex, the eccentric line of pads and tampons for young women. Khloé told me that she loves that the line is "trying to destroy the old-fashioned belief that we have to be so discreet" and that it also supports the charity Girls for a Change. During fashion week, a fleet of branded U by Kotex taxis will be picking people up at Lincoln Center and in the Meatpacking District, and donating up to $100,000 to the charity. I chatted with Khloé, and she opened up about the awkward years in the Kardashian household, as well as her move to Dallas for love. Keep reading to find out all about it!

TrèsSugar: Why did you team up with U by Kotex?
Khloé Kardashian Odom: I love their packaging, the neon colors, the black boxes, they're trying to make everything so chic, and fun, and vibrant, like it's OK. Especially if you're in high school and you're pulling out one of those tampons or maxi pads, it's not as embarrassing. I love being able to let women, and especially younger women, know that it's OK to talk about this and to ask questions.

TS: Would this message have appealed to you when you were younger?
KKO: I am so thankful that I had older sisters, because I had a really tough time in school. I was always bullied in school. If it wasn't for my older sisters always making me feel like everything was OK and being able to ask them questions, I don't really know how I would have gotten through those years. I love that this brand is almost like an older sister but on a larger scheme. They're letting everyone know that this is what happens to everybody and it's awkward for everyone.

TS: So who did your older sisters talk to? Did your mom fill that role?
KKO: Kourtney told me that she didn't even tell my mom she got her period for the first year and a half. She said she told her friend and her friend just told her what to do. To me, I find that so weird. But that's Kourtney. Kim was always very open about it, but I think Kim got hers first, and I think Kourtney got jealous. Kids are weird! I don't get what that jealousy is. I'm like, "Honey, please. Be grateful that you don't have it." It's so funny that I'm 27, and my sisters are 16 and 14. I'm not so much older than them, but the comfort in talking about your bodies grows so much.

Home According to the Bronte Sisters, in Fact and Fiction

While the Edwardian era is all the rage at the moment, due to Downton Abbey, the 19th century was pretty fascinating as well, thanks in part to its fantastic literature. The Victorian era produced an amazing number of fantastic romance and horror novels, and one family that contributed greatly to the literature of the time was the Brontes. Sisters Charlotte, Emily, and Anne produced an impressive body of literature, both poems and fiction, which are still being used for films today - in fact, the latest adaptation of Jane Eyre is still one of my favorite films of 2011. Another adaptation of the novel Wuthering Heights screened at Sundance, so we can only hope that we'll have another chance at seeing Heathcliff on the silver screen soon.

Beyond Red: Decorating With Ruby Hues

When it comes to deep saturated color, ruby rules the red tones. This saturated color originally was used to represent the color that best expressed the ruby gemstone. Its gorgeous red color strikes me as passionate, regal, and perfect for adding to your home decor.

Ruby is actually an easier shade to decorate with than straight red, thanks to the brown and purple tones present in varying shades of the color. Essentially, this means you have a red shade that plays well with a variety of other colors. Try mixing a ruby-red chandelier with a duck's-egg shade of painted walls, or add a ruby-red sofa to an eclectic mix of multihued wood furniture and patterned upholstered chairs.

For a modern ruby chandelier that won't strain your pocketbook, try the Boom Lucite Chandelier ($105). Inspired by papercut art, the chandelier features two planes of voluptuous laser cut into lucite curls. For an even greater impact, try hanging a cluster of three.

The color mix in Flavor Paper's Shore Leave Wallpaper ($150) has a fun edge, which matches the imagery. Designed by Emily Minnie, the pattern features old-school tattoo images including stars, pinup girls, and anchors. I'd love to see this papering a powder room in a roller derby girl's home.

Perhaps my absolute favorite find is the Hans Wegner Oculus Chair ($5,500). Available in a variety of colors, this gorgeous chair features a wool upholstery and a stainless steel base. Originally designed in 1960, Carl Hansen & Son began reproducing the Oculus chair three years ago based on the prototype still owned by Wegner's family.
